The hydroxynitrile lyase (HNL) activity of nine defatted Prunus seeds was compared for catalyzing the addition of HCN to aromatic, heteroaromatic and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes. Although the conversion and enantiomeric excess (ee) of the corresponding cyanohydrins were both influenced by the HNL source and the chemical structure of the aldehyde, Prunus HNLs were all suitable for the enantioselective preparation of cyanohydrins.

Herein, we describe first reactions of benzoic acids in the presence of carbonyl compounds, affording aldol products in moderate to high yields. The dermal hand transfer of three fragrance materials (cinnamic aldehyde, d-limonene and eugenol) from scented candles was determined in 10 subjects (i.e., 20 hands) after grasping scented candles for 5 consecutive 20s exposures/grasps. Studies in guinea pig and man have shown that eugenol can quench non-specifically contact urticarial responses, whereas limonene seems largely ineffective.
