[Comparative study on the question of systemic chemoprophylaxis following gynecological surgery].

The incidence of delayed wound healing and urinary tract infections was studied in 2 randomized groups of post-operative gynecological patients, one of which was given systemic antibiotic prophylaxis and the other not. 143 women were given Bactrim in a standard dose of 2 x 2 tablets or ampoules daily, commencing preoperatively during and continuing until the eighth postoperative day. The control group received placebos parenterally and orally for the same period. The incidence of complications in wound healing, of subfebrile and febrile states, urinary tract infections and micturition difficul

Emergence of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Pathogens in Community-Acquired Urinary Tract Infections Among Infants at a Pediatric Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing pathogens are common among adults and are associated with extended and multiple hospitalizations. They cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) among children with known risk factors such as urinary tract abnormalities and antimicrobial prophylaxis. The emergence of UTIs caused by ESBL-producing organisms among infants has not been well characterized. OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe the incidence and current clinical management of infants who were diagnosed with UTIs caused by ESBL-producing organisms at a pediatric emergency department

[Important to reduce the risk of infections in residential facilities].

In view of the fact that Swedish nursing home care represents an integrated form of residential housing and health care and it is not possible to classify infections as either "health-care-associated" or "community-acquired". Thus it is not appropriate to use the same surveillance systems as those used in hospitals. The presence of known risk factors for infection--either related to medical devices or due to underlying illness--could however be monitored. Antibiotic treatment favours selection of resistant bacterial strains and should thus be used with prudence. At December 8th, 2000, we inves

Urinary tract infections in children.

A five-year review of pediatric patients with urinary tract infections shows that absolute colony counts are not satisfactory as the sole criterion for urinary tract infection. Prior to culture results, patients can be treated empirically if the urine is nitrite-positive or if there is more than an occasional organism per high power field on unspun urine. In this series, no diagnostic or therapeutic benefit resulted from localizing studies. Patients with enuresis and infection should undergo radiologic evaluation for an anatomic abnormality.

Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection in Adult Patients, Risk Factors, and Efficacy of Low Dose Prophylactic Antibiotics Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs in sizable percentages of patients after a single episode and is a frequent cause of primary healthcare visits and hospital admissions, accounting for up to one quarter of emergency department visits. We aim to describe the pattern of continuous antibiotic prophylaxis prescription for recurrent urinary tract infections, in what group of adult patients they are prescribed and their efficacy. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all adult patients diagnosed with single and recurrent symptomatic urinary tract infection in the period

Uro-Vaxom and the management of recurrent urinary tract infection in adults: a randomized multicenter double-blind trial.

A total of 112 patients with recurrent lower urinary tract infection (UTI) completed the 6-month period of the trial. Patients were treated for 3 months, under double-blind conditions, with one capsule daily of either Uro-Vaxom (UV) or placebo, together with an antibiotic or chemotherapeutic agent when necessary, and observed for a further 3 months. During the 6 months of the trial a significant decrease in the number of recurrences (p < 0.0005) was noted in the UV group as compared to the placebo group. A total of 67.2% of the patients had no recurrences (p < 0.0005). The incidence of bacteri

Inflammation and thrombosis in patients with COVID-19: A prothrombotic and inflammatory disease caused by SARS coronavirus-2.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by 'Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2' (SARS-CoV-2) infection emerged in Wuhan, a city of China, and spread to the entire planet in early 2020. The virus enters the respiratory tract cells and other tissues via ACE2 receptors. Approximately 20% of infected subjects develop severe or critical disease. A cytokine storm leads to over inflammation and thrombotic events. The most common clinical presentation in COVID-19 is pneumonia, typically characterized by bilateral, peripheral, and patchy infiltrations in the lungs. However multi-systemi

Micro-organisms attached to the lumens and balloons of indwelling urinary catheters and correlation with symptoms, antibiotic use and catheter specimen of urine results.

To determine micro-organisms attached to removed urethral catheters and relate this to patient-specific information. Indwelling urethral catheters were collected from patients at a UK teaching hospital. The balloon and lumen were sonicated, and micro-organisms were enumerated. Catheter specimen urine results were retrospectively reviewed. Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis were the most common isolates from 61 catheters. 19.7% of patients received antibiotics and 25 % of those had a multi-drug-resistant (MDR) organism in the lumen. Only 2.04% of catheters from patients not receiving an

Asymptomatic bacteriurea among pregnant women visiting Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Urinary tract infection is the commonest bacterial infection in pregnancy. The overall incidence is 5.0-10.0% of all pregnancy. During pregnancy bacterial growth is favoured by increased urinary content of glucose, aminoacids and other nutrients. Other factors responsible for infection are basically related to hormonal effect and mechanical factors. Prolonged stasis of urine in urinary bladder favours growth of micro organism, relaxation of vesico-ureteric junction leads to reflux of urine from bladder to ureter and later up to renal pelvis and later can affect the renal parenchyma affecting t

Bacteremia and urogenital infection with Actinomyces urogenitalis following prolonged urinary retention.

A case of bacteremia with the fastidious bacteria Actinomyces urogenitalis following lengthy urinary retention is reported in a sixty-year-old man. In 2013, the first case of bacteremia due to A. urogenitalis was presented, secondary to a tubo-ovarian abscess following transvaginal oocyte retrieval. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first male bacteremic episode involving A. urogenitalis related to a urinary tract focus. The patient had no prior urogenital medical history. Extensive susceptibility testing was done on isolates from urinary and blood cultures. The organism exhibited fluo

Evidence for the use of silver-alloy-coated urethral catheters.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are a common occurrence and are associated with increased patient morbidity and mortality. In addition, they delay patient discharge from hospital, substantially increase hospital costs and promote the emergence of resistant organisms. Any intervention resulting in a decrease in the incidence of CAUTIs would have a significant impact on patient quality of life and hospital costs. By reviewing the current literature, it can be seen that the use of silver-alloy-coated hydrogel catheters can reduce CAUTIs by up to 45%. Despite reducing CAUTIs

The induction of cystitis and the implantation of tumours in rat and rabbit bladders.

A method of inducing tumour growth in rat and rabbit bladders is described. Tumour induction is dependent on a pre-induced cystitis. In rats, tumour also grows in the kidneys because of species characteristic vesicoureteric reflux. The possible significance is discussed in relation to the management of human bladder tumours.

The effect of repeated instillations of antiseptics on catheter-associated urinary tract infections: a study in a physical model of the catheterized bladder.

The activity of three antiseptic bladder washout solutions was examined in a physical model of the catheterized bladder. Tests were performed against cultures of four common urinary tract pathogens that had established themselves in the model and colonized the surfaces with biofilm. Double instillations of chlorhexidine (0.02% w/v) at 6-h intervals failed to eliminate Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, and Providencia stuartii from the bladder model. Escherichia coli, however, was susceptible to a second instillation provided that it was performed within 12 h. Supplementing chlorhexidi

Febrile urinary tract infections: pyelonephritis and urosepsis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Complicated infections of the urinary tract (UTI) including pyelonephritis and urosepsis are also called febrile UTI. This review describes insights from the literature on this topic since July 2014. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies regarding risk factors and consequences of febrile UTI confirmed existing knowledge. It remains difficult to obtain insight into the epidemiology of febrile UTI because urine and blood cultures are frequently missing. The relationship between host and virulence factors of Escherichia coli was further explored showing that less virulent strains ca

[Bacteriuria and Symptomatic Urinary Tract Infections during Antimicrobial Prophylaxis in Patients with Short-Term Urinary Catheters - Prospective Randomised Study in Patients after Joint Replacement Surgery].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY A very serious complication following joint replacement surgery is periprosthetic joint infection that can be caused by a urinary tract infection. Insertion of an indwelling urinary catheter constitutes a risk factor that may result in urinary tract infections. The aim of this prospective randomised study was to compare the occurrence of significant bacteriuria and symptomatic urinary tract infections during antibiotic prophylaxis at the time of removal of an indwelling urinary catheter by cotrimoxazole in two doses and with no administration of antibiotics. We also monito

Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of chromone derivatives against uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is a urinary tract pathogen responsible for most nosocomial urinary tract infections and can cause severe conditions like acute cystitis of the bladder or pyelonephritis. UPEC harbors a host of virulence factors like curli, hemolysin, siderophore, and motility factors and can form biofilm-like communities and quiescent reservoirs that aid its survival. This study was performed to investigate the antibiofilm, antimicrobial, and antivirulence potentials of three chromone derivatives, namely, 6-bromo 3-formylchromone, 6-chloro 3-formylchromone, and 3-formyl 6
