Risk of Prescription Opioid Exposure in Children and Adolescents With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Nationwide Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: US studies suggest a positive association between attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the risk of exposure to prescription opioids. However, whether this association holds in Asian countries remains unclear. METHODS: In total, 91,518 children and adolescents with ADHD and 91,518 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled for the period of 2001 to 2009; they were followed up until the end of 2011 to determine whether they had used prescription opioids. RESULTS: Children (hazard ratio [HR]: 5.83) and adolescents (HR: 3.44) with ADHD had a higher likelihood of recei

BOLD Activation During the Application of MOXO-CPT in School Patients With and Without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 3% of children in the world. OBJECTIVE: In this work, we seek to compare the different brain activations of pediatric patients with and without ADHD. METHODS: A functional resonance examination with BOLD contrast was applied using the MOXO-CPT test (Continuous Performance test with single and double visual-auditory distractors). RESULTS: Differences in BOLD activation were observed indicating that control children regularly presented negative BOLD activations that were not found in ch

Patterns of brain dynamic functional connectivity are linked with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-related behavioral and cognitive dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a clinically heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder defined by characteristic behavioral and cognitive features. Abnormal brain dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) has been associated with the disorder. The full spectrum of ADHD-related variation of brain dynamics and its association with behavioral and cognitive features remain to be established. METHODS: We sought to identify patterns of brain dynamics linked to specific behavioral and cognitive dimensions using sparse canonical correlation analysis across a cohort of child

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occurs with other psychiatric and physical diseases. However, available evidence on associations between ADHD and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is mixed. To systematically review, quantitatively synthesize, and appraise available evidence on the link between ADHD with CVDs, we searched relevant articles in PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from inception to May 1, 2022. Study quality was assessed by using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and random-effects model meta-analyses were performed. A total of 18,391,169 (ADHD: n = 421,22

A case of trichotillomania and bulimia nervosa in a patient with adult-onset attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Identifying any potential comorbidity such as bulimia nervosa (BN) and ADHD in trichotillomania patients is essential for a thorough treatment plan. Combining a multidisciplinary approach was found to be feasible and effective in the treatment. ABSTRACT: Trichotillomania is frequently considered an isolated disorder; nevertheless, emerging evidence suggests that other psychiatric conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are often found to coexist. Several studies showed that eating d

Skin Picking Successfully Treated With Atomoxetine in Comorbid Skin Picking and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Case Report.

"Skin picking disorder" (SPD: also known as neurotic excoriation, psychogenic excoriation, or dermatillomania) is classified in the "obsessive-compulsive and related disorders" category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, and characterized by unintentional, repetitive skin picking behaviors. Atomoxetine is a selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor used in the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In this case report, we present a 9-year-old girl with the comorbid diagnosis of ADHD and SPD treated successfully with atomoxetine.

Risk Taking by Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): a Behavioral and Psychophysiological Investigation of Peer Influence.

Adolescents with ADHD demonstrate increased risk-taking behavior (RTB) like substance abuse and dangerous traffic conduct. RTB in adolescence is more likely under peer influence. The current investigation (1) tests the hypothesis that adolescents with ADHD are particularly susceptible to such influence and (2) tests whether groups differed in autonomic reactivity to peer influence. Adolescent boys between 12 and 19 years with (n = 81) and without (n = 99) ADHD performed the Balloon Analogue Risk Task twice. In the peer condition, a highly credible virtual peer manipulation that encouraged risk

The Association with Quantitative Response to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Medication of the Previously Identified Neurodevelopmental Network Genes.

Objective: A recent pharmacoimaging study suggested that methylphenidate (MPH) and atomoxetine (ATX) might have common mechanisms for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Previous pharmacogenetic studies have by and large only involved genes in neurotransmitter systems, which accounted for very small variances. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether the neurodevelopmental genes identified in a prior ADHD etiology Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) could predict patients' responses to MPH and ATX, given the aforementioned mechanisms of action. Methods:

Disrupted brain functional networks in drug-naïve children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder assessed using graph theory analysis.

Neuroimaging studies have revealed functional brain network abnormalities in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but the results have been inconsistent, potentially related to confounding medication effects. Furthermore, specific topological alterations in functional networks and their role in behavioral inhibition dysfunction remain to be established. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed on 51 drug-naïve children with ADHD and 55 age-matched healthy controls. Brain functional networks were constructed by thresholding the partial correlation matrices o

Increased Functional Segregation Related to the Salience Network in Unaffected Siblings of Youths With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Although there are frequent reports of shared neurofunctional and neurostructural alterations among probands with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their unaffected siblings, there is little knowledge regarding whether abnormalities in the resting-state functional connectivity of ADHD probands is also expressed in unaffected siblings, or whether this unaffected (but at-risk) cohort manifests distinct patterns. METHOD: We used a multivariate connectome-wide association study examining intrinsic functional connectivity with resting-state functional magnetic resonanc

Risk of Traumatic Brain Injury Among Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Taiwan.

PURPOSE: Previous studies suggested that patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were prone to health-risk behaviors and accidents. However, the relationship of ADHD with the risk of traumatic brain injury (TBI) remained uncertain. METHODS: Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 72,181 children (aged 3-11 years), adolescents (12-17 years), and young adults (18-29 years) with ADHD and 72,181 age-/sex-matched controls were enrolled between 2001 and 2009, and followed up to the end of 2011 in our study. Those who developed any TBI during the follow-up

Excessive daytime sleepiness in adults with possible attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): a web-based cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Arousal dysregulation has been speculated to be involved in the pathological mechanism of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, there has been no epidemiological study assessing the real condition of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in adults with ADHD. This study investigated the prevalence of EDS and the relationship between sleepiness and ADHD symptoms in adults with possible ADHD. METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional, web-based study was performed. Participants were 9822 Japanese adults aged 20-69 years who completed an Internet-based questionnaire

Inhibitory control and delay aversion in unaffected preschoolers with a positive family history of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: From current theories on the etiology of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it can be inferred that delay aversion (DA) and deficits in inhibitory control (IC) constitute basic deficits or endophenotypes of the disorder that already occur in the preschool period. This implies an occurrence of the characteristics in unaffected preschoolers with a positive family history of ADHD. Thus, it is hypothesized that preschoolers who are not affected by ADHD but who have first-degree relatives who suffer, or have suffered, from ADHD show deficits in IC and heightened DA in comp
