Control of pulmonary surfactant secretion from type II pneumocytes isolated from the lizard Pogona vitticeps.

Pulmonary surfactant, a mixture consisting of lipids and proteins and secreted by type II cells, functions to reduce the surface tension of … utonomic control. It appears that the secretion of surfactant PL is predominantly controlled by the autonomic nervous system in lizards. The sympathetic nervous system may control surfactant secretion at high temperatures, whereas the parasympathetic nervous system may predominate at lower body temperatures, stimulating surfactant secretion without elevating metabolic rat …

Sympathetic neuroimaging.

Sympathetic neuroimaging provides an important supplement to physiological, neurochemical, and neuropharmacological approaches in the evaluation of patients with clinical autonomic disorders. Almost all sympathetic neuroimaging to date has involved visualization of noradrenergic innervation in the left ventricular myocardium. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scanning after injection of the sympathomimetic amine (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine ((123)I-MIBG) constitutes by far the most commonly used means worldwide to assess cardiac sympathetic innervation. Based on heart:medias

A review of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity after acquired brain injury.

Severe excessive autonomic overactivity occurs in a subgroup of people surviving acquired brain injury, the majority of whom show paroxysmal sympathetic and motor overactivity. Delayed recognition of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) after brain injury may increase morbidity and long-term disability. Despite its significant clinical impact, the scientific literature on this syndrome is confusing; there is no consensus on nomenclature, etiological information for diagnoses preceding the condition is poorly understood, and the evidence base underpinning our knowledge of the pathophysiol

The role of nerves in asthma.

Asthma is a syndrome characterized by reversible episodes of wheezing, cough, and sensations of chest tightness and breathlessness. These symptoms are secondary to changes in the activity of the nervous system. The mechanisms by which the nervous system is altered such that the symptoms of asthma occur have not yet been elucidated. Airway inflammation associated with asthma may affect neuronal activity at several points along the neural reflex pathway, including the function of the primary afferent (sensory) nerves, integration within the central nervous system, synaptic transmission within au

Perioperative implications of the patient with autonomic dysfunction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The autonomic nervous system functions to control heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, gastrointestinal motility, hormone release, and body temperature on a second-to-second basis. Here we summarize some of the latest literature on autonomic dysfunction, focusing primarily on the perioperative implications. RECENT FINDINGS: The variety of autonomic dysfunction now extends to a large number of clinical conditions in which the cause or effect of the autonomic component is blurred. Methods for detecting dysautonomia can be as simple as performing a history and physica…

The determination of vasoactive substances during autonomic dysreflexia.

Urinary bladder percussion induced autonomic dysreflexia (AD) was observed in spinal cord injured patients with a complete neurological lesion, the upper level being above T5. To document the pathology and study the etiology of autonomic dysreflexia to further investigate its mechanism, this paper presents some clinical data on the determination of vasoactive substances such as norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E), renin (R), angiotensin II (AII) and atrial natriuretic polypeptide (ANP) before and during bladder percussion in 30 patients with a thoracolumbar or cervical spine and spinal cord i

Anti-Leu 19 monoclonal antibody detects an antigen on autonomic nerves in human skin.

The monoclonal antibody anti-Leu 19 recognizes the NKH-1 antigen of active natural killer cells. In immunohistological preparations of the s … the myelinated sensory nervous system, whereas anti-Leu 19 seems to constitute a new marker for the autonomic nervous system of the skin.

Heart and Brain: Anatomic and Physiologic Relationship.

The heart and brain are an integrated, bidirectional axis, communicating through neural and hormonal pathways. This article examines the neuroanatomy, physiologic interactions, and clinical implications of this vital system. Anatomically, the cardiac autonomic nervous system features extrinsic sympathetic (norepinephrine) and parasympathetic (acetylcholine) innervation, fine-tuned by the local intrinsic cardiac nervous system. Cardiovascular diseases impair brain function, raising the risk of cognitive decline and stroke. Conversely, neurologic disorders can trigger cardiac complications via a…

[Cardiovascular autonomous dysfunction in diabetics: the influence of disease duration, glycoregulation degree and diabetes type].

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular autonomous neuropathy (CAN) in diabetes has not been still defined clinically and aetiopathogenetically. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of disease duration, glycoregulation degree and diabetes type on damage of the cardiovascular part of the autonomous nervous system in our group of patients. METHOD: This study included diabetics, (100 patients) the same number of patients with diabetes type I and II as well as 20 healthy individuals in the control group. Classic Ewing's cardiovascular tests were used for CAN diagnosis: (1) the ca

Physiology mechanisms of exercise for PTSD: a narrative review.

In at-risk societies, the population of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) incidence is gradually expanding from veterans to the general public. In the face of the high incidence of PTSD, exercise therapy, as an economical and maneuverable treatment, has not received the attention it deserves. In this paper, the literature on PTSD symptom improvement through comb-climbing exercise interventions found that performing long-term exercise can achieve significant improvement in PTSD symptoms by modulating the central nervous system, autonomic nervous system, and immune system at the physiologica…

Cardiac changes in epilepsy.

Epilepsy and seizures can have a dramatic effect on the autonomic nervous system by involvement of the central autonomic control centers. The peri-ictal changes can lead to short-term alteration of cardiac functions in patients with seizures, and are partially hemispheric specific. Changes in heart rhythm, conduction and even subtle signs of ischemia have been reported. Ictal asystole and the lock-step phenomenon during seizures play an important role in the pathophysiology of SUDEP. In patients with longlasting epilepsy and multiple seizures, there are now convincing arguments for a chronic d…

Intensity of motion sickness symptoms as a function of apparent autonomic balance.

Twenty volunteer male college students were exposed to motion picture films which reliably elicit symptoms of motion sickness. Those Ss with relatively higher apparent sympathetic nervous system dominance showed significantly smaller autonomic reactions to the film. It was concluded that increased sympathetic tone tended to the film. It was concluded that increased sympathetic tone tended to reduce autonomic reactions to motion sickness stimuli. It was suggested that the sympathetic nervous system symptoms that usually occur in motion sickness are actually defensive reactions rather than sympt

Cardiovascular autonomic failure correlates with cutaneous autonomic denervation in PD and MSA.

PURPOSE: Cardiovascular autonomic failure and neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) are common and disabling in Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Recent studies have shown evidence of postganglionic autonomic denervation in MSA as well as PD. We aimed to characterise the relationship between nOH, autonomic failure and postganglionic denervation in PD and MSA. We hypothesised that postganglionic autonomic denervation contributes to the development of nOH and correlates with the severity of cardiovascular autonomic failure. METHODS: We assessed 57 patients (37 PD, 2
