In order to clarify the appearance of monocytoid B lymphocytes (MBLs) in abscess-forming granulomatous lymphadenitis (AGL) and the relation between AGL and cat-scratch disease (CSD), 48 cases of AGL were studied histologically. MBLs were present in about 50% of AGL cases. Warthin-Starry (WS) silver stain-positive bacteria, which are the causative agent of CSD, were present in 52.4% of AGL cases with MBLs and 59.2% of AGL cases without MBLs. The HLA types of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of 36 adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) patients were examined and compared with those of 45 healthy relatives of these patients, and with those of 10 non-ATLL families including 80 healthy members. After experimental invasion of guinea-pigs with the eggs of Ascaris suum (5,000 eggs per animal), the dynamics and distribution of T and B-dependent cells in lymphoid organs (spleen, mesenteric, hepatic and mediastinal nodes) were studied. The detection of both cell populations by means of rosette methods (E, EA, EAC) showed that in all studied organs their first increase took place on the first and second day after invasion. On the fifth to seventh day after invasion the maximum increase in T cells was observed in spleen, mesenteric and hepatic nodes and on the ninth day in mediastinal nodes.

In 13 women with premature follicular depletion (PFD) the concentration of T and B lymphocytes, T-cell subpopulation, and serum immunoglobulins was determined. Ecto-5'-nucleotidase activity was measured in lymphocyte subpopulations isolated from normal subjects and patients with congenital X-linked agammaglobulinemia. B lymphocytes from normal subjects have at least three times more ecto-5'-nucleotidase activity than T lymphocytes. Patients with X-linked agammaglobulinemia have 56% of normal activity in their T cells, and lack a lymphocyte subpopulation high in nucleotidase activity. High activity of ecto-5'-nucleotidase may be a biochemical marker for mature surface immunoglobulin-bearing B cells.
