Use of biofeedback training in treatment of Raynaud's disease and phenomenon.

To assess biofeedback training in Raynaud's, we retrospectively reviewed 23 patients' records. Eleven had Raynaud's disease and 12 had Raynaud's phenomenon; 9 had recurrent digital ulcers. Patients demonstrated lower baseline digital temperatures than controls (p less than or equal to 0.001), patients with Raynaud's and scleroderma manifesting the lowest. After biofeedback training all patients elevated baseline temperatures. Patients with scleroderma and systemic lupus erythematosus had the greatest elevations. Improvement, both subjective (57%) and ulcers (44%), persisted one year after trea

Biofeedback and progressive relaxation treatment of sleep-onset insomnia: a controlled, all-night investigation.

Previous research suggests that self-defined insomniacs are distinguished from normals by high levels of anxiety and physiological arousal, which might be mitigated by muscle relaxation. This study assessed the relative effects of frontal EMG biofeedback, progressive relaxation, and a placebo set of "relaxation" exercises on the sleep of 18 onset insomniacs. Each subject was trained in one of these three methods for six half-hour sessions and slept in the laboratory for two consecutive nights before and after training. The experimental groups demonstrated significant decreases in physiological

Clinical application of computerized evaluation and re-education biofeedback prototype for sensorimotor control of the hand in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Hemianaesthesia patients usually exhibit awkward and inefficient finger movements of the affected hands. Conventionally, most interventions emphasize the improvement of motor deficits, but rarely address sensory capability and sensorimotor control following stroke. Thus it is critical for stroke patients with sensory problems to incorporate appropriate strategies for dealing with sensory impairment, into traditional hand function rehabilitation programs. In this study, we used a custom-designed computerized evaluation and re-education biofeedback (CERB) prototype to analyze hand gr

Chronic abdominal pain and dyspareunia in endometriosis: pain therapy with a nerve and muscle stimulation device with biofeedback function.

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis (EM) is frequently associated with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and dyspareunia, often linked to secondary pelvic floor dysfunction and hypertonicity. To evaluate whether the use of an intravaginal electromyography (EMG) biofeedback and electrostimulation device reduces pain and improves quality of life in patients with EM. METHODS: In this prospective single-arm-real-world clinical study, 201 women with endometriosis used a home-based intravaginal device for three months (up to eight sessions per week). The intervention included two programs: (1) electrical stimulati

Clinical effectiveness of biofeedback for treating stress urinary incontinence in women: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training (PFMT) is a standard conservative first-line treatment for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women. However, the success of PFMT alone, without adjunctive therapies, has been hindered by the lack of adherence among women, who report the inability to contract the correct PFMs and limited motivation to perform PFMT exercises. Therefore, PFMT is often combined with adjunctive therapies, such as biofeedback (BF). The conventional BF device employed in clinical practice is invasive and involves the insertion of an intravaginal probe, causing pain

Symptom Management Among Cancer Survivors: Randomized Pilot Intervention Trial of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback.

Chronic cancer-related symptoms (stress, fatigue, pain, depression, insomnia) may be linked with sympathetic nervous system over-activation and autonomic imbalance. Decreased heart rate variability (HRV) is an indicator of autonomic dysregulation that is commonly observed among cancer survivors. HRV biofeedback (HRVB) training induces HRV coherence, which maximizes HRV and facilitates autonomic and cardiorespiratory homeostasis. This randomized, wait-list-controlled, pilot intervention trial tested the hypothesis that HRVB can improve HRV coherence and alleviate cancer-related symptoms. The in

The effect of surface electromyography biofeedback on the activity of extensor and dorsiflexor muscles in elderly adults: a randomized trial.

Surface electromyography-biofeedback (sEMG-B) is a technique employed for the rehabilitation of patients with neurological pathologies, such as stroke-derived hemiplegia; however, little is known about its effectiveness in the rehabilitation of the extension and flexion of several muscular groups in elderly patients after a stroke. Therefore, this research was focused on determining the effectiveness of sEMG-B in the muscles responsible for the extension of the hand and the dorsiflexion of the foot in post-stroke elderly subjects. Forty subjects with stroke-derived hemiplegia were randomly div

An Approach for the Cooperative Control of FES With a Powered Exoskeleton During Level Walking for Persons With Paraplegia.

This paper describes a hybrid system that combines a powered lower limb exoskeleton with functional electrical stimulation (FES) for gait restoration in persons with paraplegia. The general control structure consists of two control loops: a motor control loop, which utilizes joint angle feedback control to control the output of the joint motor to track the desired joint trajectories, and a muscle control loop, which utilizes joint torque profiles from previous steps to shape the muscle stimulation profile for the subsequent step in order to minimize the motor torque contribution required for j

The role of urinary nerve growth factor for the diagnosis and assessment of the biofeedback success in children with dysfunctional voiding.

INTRODUCTION: Dysfunctional voiding (DV) occurs in neurologically normal children who are not able to establish brain control on detrusor muscle contractions (DMCs). It is also reported to be the result of incorrect voiding habits during toilet training. Children contract pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) to suppress DMC and DV begins. Urinary nerve growth factor (uNGF) is necessary for the synthesis and regulation of neurotransmitters, development of dorsal root ganglia (sensory neurons), and development of sympathetic cells during embryonic and post-natal life. uNGF has also a role in the intracel

[Update on fecal incontinence].

Fecal incontinence is defined as an accidental loss of stool or the inability to control defecation. There are three subtypes of fecal incontinence: passive incontinence, urge incontinence and soiling. About 8% of the adult population suffer from fecal incontinence, but only 1/3 consults a doctor. Beside the individual handicap, fecal incontinence has a huge socio-economic impact. Causes of fecal incontinence are changes in the quantity or quality of the stool and structural or functional disorders. Diagnostics encompass the medical history, clinical examination including the digital rectal ex

Novel artificial anal sphincter system based on transcutaneous energy transmission system tested in vivo.

This paper proposes a novel artificial anal sphincter system (AASS) for severe fecal incontinence. The AASS is composed of an artificial anal sphincter (AAS), an external transcutaneous energy transmission system (TETS), and an external control device. The AAS is composed of a cuff, a micropump, a reservoir, and a remote control device. It is designed to be implanted into the body of the patient. The function of the AAS is to open and close the patient's natural anus. Patients suffering from loss of their natural sphincter lose rectal sensation and are thus unable to perceive imminent fecal in

Balance training improves static stability and gait in chronic incomplete spinal cord injury subjects: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Walking is considered the most important goal after an incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Only recently it has been demonstrated that balance is a key factor of walking recovery, but no data on the efficacy of balance training in supporting walking function in SCI subjects are available. AIM: The object of the study was to determine the efficacy of visual biofeedback task-specific balance training (vBFB) in improving balance performance and gait in SCI subjects compared with conventional over-ground rehabilitation (Rehab). DESIGN: Open-case study with retrospective matched cont
