Translational approaches to the study of eosinophils in vasculitis.

Eosinophil basic biology, including immunoregulatory functions, plays a complex role in a myriad of disorders where eosinophils play a role. Established in vivo and in vitro models and novel emerging techniques for studying eosinophils are integral to parsing the involvement of eosinophils in the pathogenesis of disorders including vasculitis. Knowledge of translational approaches from eosinophil-associated diseases and their application to eosinophilic vasculitis are highlighted. It is becoming increasingly evident that the roles of eosinophils in disease are complex. The use of targeted biol

Global research trends on the associations between chronic kidney disease and mitochondria: insights from the bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health burden characterized by a progressive and irreversible loss of kidney function. Mitochondrial dysfunction has emerged as a pivotal factor in CKD pathogenesis, contributing to renal cell injury, inflammation, and fibrosis through mechanisms such as oxidative stress and impaired bioenergetics. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global research trends on the associations between CKD and mitochondria over the past two decades. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science Core C

Reporting the standard error of the mean: a critical analysis of three journals in manual medicine.

BACKGROUND: In the realm of biomedical research articles, authors typically utilize descriptive statistics to outline the characteristics of their study samples. The standard deviation (SD) serves to illustrate variability among the individuals in a sample, whereas the standard error of the mean (SEM) conveys the level of uncertainty associated with the sample mean's representation of the population mean. It is not unusual for authors of scientific articles to incorrectly utilize the SEM rather than the SD when explaining data variability. This is problematic because the SEM is consistently sm…

Engaging patient-led rare disease organizations to advance research - through the lens of Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

For researchers and clinician-scientists, forging partnerships with patient-led rare disease organizations can be a challenge. Patient-led rare disease organizations often operate quite differently to research and medical institutions, large private or public funding organizations, and pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies, leaving researchers and clinician-scientists uncertain about how, when and where to engage for mutual benefit. However, the value of reciprocal engagement can be immense, paying dividends in new research directions, accelerating existing research, facilitating access to

To Ground Research in the Lived Experience of Patients and Caregivers, Give Us a Voice!

My daughter has been diagnosed with a range of chronic conditions, including Hyper-mobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). I have approached my role as caregiver in the same way I approach my day job leading social science research: reading the literature, carefully observing her condition, and developing hypotheses about her conditions and how they might be treated. I now have more than 7 years of longitudinal observation-a wealth of data-but no easy way to share with the medical research community the hypotheses these observations have e

Consensus-based recommendations for the rehabilitation of children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita: an integrated knowledge translation approach.

BACKGROUND: Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a group of rare disorders characterized by multiple joint contractures present at birth. Early rehabilitation is essential to minimize joint contractures and maximize autonomy and participation among individuals with AMC. However, there is little robust scientific evidence to inform best practice. This project aimed to develop consensus-based recommendations for the rehabilitation management of children with AMC in the following priority areas: early intervention and motor development, muscle and joint function, orthotics, mobility, parti

Charting the future: current and future directions in translational research for individuals with Down syndrome.

The most common genetic cause of intellectual and developmental disability is trisomy of human chromosome 21 (trisomy 21) or Down syndrome. Relative to the general population, individuals with Down syndrome heterogeneously experience atypical morphogenesis, a distinct neurocognitive profile, and a unique spectrum of diverse medical conditions that impact every major organ system. How trisomy 21 results in the highly variable manifestations of Down syndrome remains largely unknown and an active area of heavy investigation with therapeutic implications. For example, common inflammatory and metab

Defying barriers to fight tuberculosis in West Africa: a model of equitable partnerships within a research capacity-strengthening network in the subregion.

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), is the leading cause of death from a single infectious disease, despite being treatable. Global TB control efforts face significant challenges, including insufficient funding, ineffective vaccines, inadequate diagnostics, and complex treatments, particularly in resource-limited regions. West Africa has a unique TB epidemiology, characterized by medium- to high-prevalence rates and a greater diversity of the MTBC, which further compounds control efforts. In response to the global call to end TB by 2030, the West African
