Most sensory systems are organized into parallel neuronal pathways that process distinct aspects of incoming stimuli. In the insect olfactory system, second order projection neurons target both the mushroom body, required for learning, and the lateral horn (LH), proposed to mediate innate olfactory behavior. Mushroom body neurons form a sparse olfactory population code, which is not stereotyped across animals. In contrast, odor coding in the LH remains poorly understood. We combine genetic driver lines, anatomical and functional criteria to show that the Drosophila LH has ~1400 neurons and >16

Globally, the burden of diabetes is increasing very rapidly as is the diabetic related complications. Infections in diabetes mellitus are relatively more common and serious. Diabetic patients run the risk of acute metabolic decompensation during infections, and conversely patients with metabolic decompensation are at higher risk of certain invasive infections. Infections in diabetic patients result in extended hospital stays and additional financial burden.1 Medicine in modern world has seen tremendous advancements like newer generation of anti-diabetic drugs, modern insulin therapy, better in

Accidental severe hypothermia is a medical emergency in which symptoms may include coma, apnea, pulmonary edema, ventricular dysrhythmia or asystole. Despite optimal treatment, mortality remains high. This article reports a case of severe hypothermia in a geriatric hypothyroid patient, where despite a body core temperature of 23.1 °C the patient presented conscious and with stable vital signs, pronounced motor response, and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 9. Blood gas analysis (alpha stat at 37 °C) indicated sufficient pulmonary function. A noninvasive rewarming approach proved successful and re

Maintenance of a patient's international normalised ratio (INR) within the appropriate target range remains a challenge in clinical practice. The effects of concurrent medication, alcohol and compliance on stable control are well documented. Recent evidence also shows that supplemental vitamin K in patients with low body stores improves the stability of INR in these patients. Here, the case of a 57-year-old with coeliac disease requiring warfarin for a metallic mitral valve, who had poor INR stability resulting in thrombotic and bleeding complications, is described. Her vitamin K body stores w

The treatment of the immune-mediated inflammatory myopathies remains largely empirical. Corticosteroids are usually effective in polymyositis and dermatomyositis but may need to be combined with methotrexate or azathioprine in some patients. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is effective as add-on therapy in some patients not adequately controlled with steroids or immunosuppressive agents, but further controlled trials of IVIg are necessary to define the indications and optimal dose regimens. Cyclophosphamide, cyclosporin, or chlorambucil may be effective in patients with refractory polymyosit

Dantrolene (2.45 mg/kg body weight, range 2 to 4) was administered iv in eight heat stroke (HS) patients and compared with a control group of 12 patients of similar age, weight, and temperature range (41.9 degrees to 44 degrees C). Body surface cooling was conducted in air conditioned rooms at temperatures of 18 degrees to 23 degrees C. Mean cooling time in the dantrolene group was 49.7 +/- 4.4 (SEM) min, whereas cooling time in the control group was 69.2 +/- 4.8 min. The decrease in temperature was significantly greater in the dantrolene group, for whom the cooling time was decreased by about

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa has been increasingly examined in performance-oriented populations; however, evidence in higher-education dance students remains limited, particularly across multiple dance disciplines and with integrated psychological assessment.
OBJECTIVE: To examine orthorexia nervosa distribution among higher-education dance students across 4 disciplines (classical dance, contemporary, flamenco, and Spanish dance) and to analyse its association with psychological distress and body dissatisfaction.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 318 students enrolled in

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of overweight and obesity among university students constitutes a pressing public health concern; however, the differential effectiveness of various exercise interventions on body composition remains insufficiently characterized.
METHODS: This network meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of four exercise modalities-high-intensity interval training (HIIT), resistance exercise (RE), aerobic exercise (AE), and combined aerobic-resistance exercise (AE+RE)-on adiposity-related outcomes in overweight and obese university students. The primary outcomes assess

INTRODUCTION: Prevention of hemodynamic complications during hemodialysis remains challenging. Although whole body bioimpedance is well established in fluid status assessment, its use for dynamic or continuous recordings is limited. A segmental approach may serve this purpose better. This study investigates which body segment is best targeted to measure bioimpedance for hemodynamic monitoring.
METHODS: In this observational study, serial bioimpedance measurements were conducted on the whole body, lower leg, upper arm, and thorax of 15 patients during two hemodialysis sessions. The resistance

BACKGROUND: Leptin is a hormone that is secreted by the adipocytes. In the circulation, leptin levels are directly proportional to the body fat percentage. Studies have shown that higher leptin levels are associated with an increased risk of hypertension after adjusting for body mass index (BMI). Therefore, leptin has been proposed as a mediator of obesity-related hypertension. Whether leptin is associated with hypertension when controlling for body fat percentage remains unclear.
METHODS: We studied 103 obese men (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2). All men were healthy and were medication-free. We measured

This systematic review with meta-analysis analysed the effects of COVID-19 lockdowns on physical fitness and body composition in athletes. A comprehensive search was conducted in three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) up to January 2025 (included). Studies were included based on PICO criteria, involving adult athletes, original articles, and any quantitative assessment of physical fitness and/or body composition conducted within one month before and two weeks after the lockdown. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist was used to assess the risk of bias, while th

Metabolic rates in animals scale allometrically with body mass, a relationship well-established in terrestrial mammals. Whether these scaling laws apply to fully aquatic mammals remains uncertain, due to key physiological and ecological differences. We estimated field metabolic rates (FMRs) for five sympatric cetaceans of varying sizes, inhabiting sub-Arctic Icelandic waters: harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena; mean body length ± s.d = 1.35 ± 0.19 m), white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris; 2.42 ± 0.17 m), minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata; 7.53 ± 0.82 m), humpback whales

BACKGROUND: Bioelectrical impedance analysis is a non-invasive method used to assess body composition and nutritional status in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, its reliability in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) remains uncertain due to altered fluid distribution caused by cystic organ enlargement. This cross-sectional study compared bioelectrical impedance analysis-derived body composition and nutritional parameters between patients with ADPKD and those with non-ADPKD CKD.
METHODS: A total of 218 CKD patients (71 with ADPKD and 147 with non-ADPKD CKD,

Results of experimental studies have shown that β-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA), an exercise-induced myokine-like molecule, is an endogenous negative regulator of fat mass in mice, but it remains unclear whether that is the case in humans, though an enhanced BAIBA concentration in patients receiving sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors was found in our recent study. The objective of this study was to analyze the determinants of circulating BAIBA concentration in humans, with focus on the possible link between circulating BAIBA and body composition including fat mass. Data for 188 consecuti

The evolutionary and ontogenetic development of the carotid body is still understudied. Research aimed at studying the comparative morphology of the organ at different periods in the individual development of various animal species should play a crucial role in understanding the physiology of the carotid body. However, despite more than two centuries of study, the human carotid body remains poorly understood. There are many knowledge gaps in particular related to the antenatal development of this structure. The aim of our work is to study the morphological and immunohistochemical characteristi…

Sepsis is a common and often fatal consequence of severe burn injury, but its exact effects on whole body and muscle metabolism in the burn patient is unclear. To address this, 13 septic and 11 nonseptic patients (age: 36.9 ± 13.0 years) with burns encompassing >30% of their total body surface area underwent muscle protein kinetic studies under postabsorptive conditions using bolus injections of ring-C6 and N phenylalanine isotopes. In parallel, whole-body lipid and carbohydrate kinetics were assessed using constant infusions of [U-C6]palmitate, [6,6-H2]glucose, and [H5]glycerol, and during a

OBJECTIVE: Dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 (DPP-4) cleaves and inactivates the insulinotropic hormones glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and gastric inhibitory polypeptide, collectively termed incretins. DPP-4 inhibitors entered clinical practice as approved therapeutics for type-2 diabetes in 2006. However, inter-individual variance in the responsiveness to DPP-4 inhibitors was reported. Thus, we asked whether genetic variation in the DPP4 gene affects incretin levels, insulin secretion, and glucose tolerance in participants of the TÜbingen Family study for type-2 diabetes (TÜF).

BACKGROUND: Wellbeing is often described as U-shaped over the life course, suggesting an apparent paradox that wellbeing remains high at older ages despite increases in impairments.
OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESES: We explore associations among age, lower body impairments-one of the most common late-life impairments-and three measures of wellbeing: life satisfaction, emotional wellbeing and somatic wellbeing. We hypothesize that age effects are positive, become stronger once lower body impairments are controlled, and are concentrated among those who have maintained their mobility. Net of confounding fac

BACKGROUND: Patients with antiretroviral therapy (ART)-associated lipodystrophy frequently have disturbances in glucose metabolism associated with insulin resistance. It is not known whether changes in body composition are necessary for the development of these disturbances in ART-naive patients starting treatment with different combination ART regimens.
METHODS: Glucose metabolism and body composition were assessed before and after 3 months of ART in a prospective randomized clinical trial of HIV-1-positive ART-naive men taking lopinavir/ritonavir within either a nucleoside reverse transcrip
