This study was aimed to compare the outcomes of two operational methods used for the fixation of calcaneal fracture, the open reduction using a plate and the minimally invasive cannulated screw fixations. Thus, we attempted to find out as to which of these fixation regimens was therapeutically superior by assessing improvement in the restoration of foot functioning and estimating the biochemical indices that reflect bone recovery. A total of 492 calcaneal fracture patients admitted in our hospital from February, 2008 to February, 2012 were selected for the study and randomly divided into two g

INTRODUCTION: scaphoid fractures comprise 50-80% of the fractures of the carpal bones. Ten percent of the scaphoid fractures evolve to non-union and show degenerative changes in the carpus in 75-97% at five years and in 100% at 10 years. The objective of this work was to evaluate the rate and time to union in patients with diagnosis of scaphoid non-union without fragmentation of the proximal pole after treatment with two cannulated headless screws and distal radius cancellous autograft.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: case series with short-term follow-up of four patients with scaphoid non-union withou

Our ability to treat scaphoid nonunions has improved dramatically. The degree of collapse and bone loss can be accurately assessed in waist fractures using sagittal images on CT scans. These nonunions require reduction and bone grafting to re-establish the normal geometry of the scaphoid. Magnetic resonance imaging helps evaluate whether or not avascular necrosis is present in the proximal pole. Because of the poor prognosis of conventional bone grafts, a vascularized bone graft is recommended as the primary treatment when AVN is present. The volar collapse of the humpback deformity is best co

UNLABELLED: This report cites new developments in the treatment of extra-articular hand fractures in adults. Recent reports confirm that small amounts of metacarpal shortening or dorsal angulation cause minimal functional impairment. Unilateral excision of the lateral band and oblique fibers of the extensor apparatus of the metacarpophalangeal joint facilitates proximal phalangeal fracture exposure and may improve functional recovery. Results using open mini screw fixation of oblique extra-articular metacarpal and phalangeal fractures may be comparable to those of percutaneous Kirschner wire f

The lumbopelvic junction is a biomechanically complex region that necessitates robust stabilization, especially following spinopelvic dissociation, unstable sacral fractures, or sacrectomy. Lumbopelvic fixation techniques, such as triangular osteosynthesis and dual S2-alar-iliac (S2AI) screw placement, optimize load transfer, restore spinal-pelvic continuity and reduce mechanical failure risks. Triangular osteosynthesis achieves up to 80% of native spine stiffness under load, while dual S2AI screws restore up to 96% stiffness and show lower screw loosening rates than single screws. Comparative

BACKGROUND Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) are effective treatments for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), but it is unclear which is better. In this study, we compared the biomechanical properties of 2-level ACDF and 1-level ACCF. MATERIAL AND METHODS An intact C3-C7 cervical spine model was developed and validated, then ACDF and ACCF simulation models were developed. We imposed 1.0 Nm moments and displacement-controlled loading on the C3 superior endplate. The range of motions (ROMs) of surgical and adjacent segments and v

BACKGROUND: Pedicle screws are pivotal in spinal fixation procedures, providing stability and facilitating the correction of spinal deformities. Several designs, including standard, cannulated, fenestrated, and expandable screws, have been developed to optimize fixation strength and address varying patient needs. Standard screws provide reliable fixation, while cannulated screws allow for minimally invasive insertion using a guidewire.
METHODS: Despite their advantages, complications such as screw loosening, misplacement, and breakage remain prevalent. Loosening is often caused by poor bone q

BACKGROUND: Optimal positioning of distal locking screws in intramedullary humeral nailing remains uncertain, particularly the influence of the distance between the fracture plane and the proximal distal locking screw on construct stability. This study aims to evaluate the mechanical stability of humeral nailing under different fracture-to-screw distances and numbers of distal locking screws using finite element analysis and mechanical testing on bone models.
METHODS: A finite element model and mechanical testing on six sawbones models were performed under traction (500 N), compression (500 N

PURPOSE: This study compared, through biomechanical evaluation under ventral flexion load, four surgical techniques for ventral stabilization of the atlantoaxial joint in dogs.
METHODS: In total, 28 identical atlantoaxial joint models were created by digital printing from computed tomography images of a dog, and the specimens were divided into four groups of seven. In each group, a different technique for ventral stabilization of the atlantoaxial joint was performed: transarticular lag screws, polyaxial screws, multiple screws and bone cement (polymethylmethacrylate-PMMA), and atlantoaxial pl

Titanium alloys are used in skeletal surgery. However, once bone union is complete, such fixation material becomes unnecessary or even harmful. Resorbable magnesium materials have been available for several years (WE43 alloy). The aim of this study was to clinically compare magnesium versus titanium open reduction and rigid fixations in mandible condylar heads. Ten patients were treated for fractures of the mandibular head with magnesium headless compression screws (2.3 mm in diameter), and 11 patients were included as a reference group with titanium screws (1.8 mm in diameter) with similar co

Cortical bone pegs have been used in osteochondritis dissecans to fix the loosened or loose fragment. In osteochondral fractures of the knee the fragment has either been removed or reattached usually with headless pins or ASIF screws and only occasionally with cortical bone pegs. We report on four patients with osteochondral fractures of the knee, where cortical bone pegs were used as the means of fixation, with good results.

INTRODUCTION: A residual postoperative fracture gap between major bone fragments following intramedullary nailing of long-bone fractures is recognised as one of the major risk factors for delayed union and non-union. The most common method for reducing a fracture gap after nail insertion is through application of the backstroke technique. We introduce forward-striking as a new and simple technique that can be used to reduce fracture gaps during cephalomedullary or intramedullary nailing.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The forward-striking technique was used in 20 patients with subtrochanteric or femor

Patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis are not only predisposed to the development of rigid cervicothoracic deformities but are also at an increased risk of cervical fractures. Deformity correction and stabilization are particularly challenging in this patient population due to the brittle bone quality and low bone mineral density. Thoracic pedicle subtraction osteotomy is a workhorse approach for the correction of focal severe kyphotic deformity with lower complication rates than 3-column osteotomy. Successful execution of an upper thoracic PSO requires careful presurgical planning as
