Incidence, mortality and survival in multiple myeloma compared to other hematopoietic neoplasms in Sweden up to year 2016.

Survival in multiple myeloma (MM) has developed favorably over the past decades for reasons that have been ascribed to new medications and treatment. However, development of survival over a long period and comparison to other hematopoietic neoplasms (HN) is less well known. Here we used Swedish cancer data from the Nordcan database, spanning a 50-year period from 1967 to 2016, and analyzed 1- and 5-year survival data. As a novel type of analysis we calculate the difference in survival between year 1 and 5 which indicates how well survival was maintained in the 4-year period following year 1 af

Mobilising stakeholders to improve access to state-of-the-art radiotherapy in low- and middle-income countries.

In an ongoing effort to improve access to state-of-the-art radiotherapy in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), a joint symposium was organised by the non-governmental, non-profit organisation Medical physicists in diaspora for Africa e.V. (MephidA e.V.) in collaboration with the Germany-based Cameroon-German medical doctor's association (Camfomedics e.V.) and the Harvard-based Global Health Catalyst summit. The goal of the symposium was to discuss the technical and structural challenges faced in African LMIC settings, re-evaluate strategies to overcome the shortfall of radiotherapy servi

Alignment of preferences in the treatment of multiple myeloma - a discrete choice experiment of patient, carer, physician, and nurse preferences.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a cancer characterised by the proliferation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow. This study examined the treatment preferences of people living with MM compared to the treatment preferences of other groups involved in treatment decision making, including carers, as well as physicians and nurses who treat people living with MM in Australia. METHODS: Data were collected using discrete choice experiments (DCEs) through an online survey. The DCEs presented participants with a traditional treatment generic choice experiment (e.g., treatment A vs treatm

Using Continuous Passive Assessment Technology to Describe Health and Behavior Patterns Preceding and Following a Cancer Diagnosis in Older Adults: Proof-of-Concept Case Series Study.

BackgroundDescribing changes in health and behavior that precede and follow a sentinel health event, such as a cancer diagnosis, is challenging because of the lack of longitudinal, objective measurements that are collected frequently enough to capture varying trajectories of change leading up to and following the event. A continuous passive assessment system that continuously monitors older adults' physical activity, weight, medication-taking behavior, pain, health events, and mood could enable the identification of more specific health and behavior patterns leading up to a cancer diagnosis an

Assessment of Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) in Outpatients Taking Oral Anticancer Drugs Included in the Real-Life Oncoral Program.

Background In previous studies, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) have been shown to improve survival in cancer patients. The aim of the present study was to assess symptoms potentially related to adverse events experienced by cancer outpatients treated by oral anticancer agents (OAAs) using PROs. Methods Between September 2018 and May 2019, outpatients starting OAAs were included in a 12-week follow-up to assess 15 symptoms listed in the National Cancer Institute PRO Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, using a 5-point scale of severity or frequency. Patients were requested to alert

A comparative analysis of health technology assessment decision-making for cancer drugs in Germany and England.

IntroductionThe rising cost of cancer drugs places a heavy burden on patients and public healthcare systems, posing an ongoing challenge of balancing access with efficient resource allocation. Health technology assessment (HTA) serves as a critical basis for reimbursement decisions, evaluating both clinical and economic value. Although the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have established standardized HTA frameworks, differences in their assessment methods and decision-making processes may lead to divergent outcomes. This study com

Acute Kidney Injury in Hospitalized Cancer Patients: Single-Centre Real-Life Analysis of Incidence and Clinical Impact.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent and clinically relevant complication in cancer patients, with highly variable incidence. AKI increases morbidity and mortality, prolongs hospitalization, and may limit access to oncologic therapies. This study evaluated the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of AKI in hospitalized cancer patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients admitted between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2019. Individuals with cancer were identified and categorized into three groups: hematologic malignancies, solid cancers with metastases, and solid canc

The PRO-CAR-T™ study: achieving excellence in patient and public involvement and engagement.

BackgroundPatient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) is advocated in Patient Reported Outcome (PRO) research, but implementation remains inconsistent and often suboptimal. Many barriers exist, including a lack of understanding about how to apply the principles of PPIE in practice. This paper offers an example of how PPIE can be meaningfully integrated into the development of a digital PRO system within the complex and rapidly evolving field of advanced therapies. The aims are to offer practical insights about how PPIE was conceptualised and operationalised in the context of this stud

Approaches and Challenges in the Management of Multiple Myeloma in the Very Old: Future Treatment Prospects.

The increasing incidence of geriatric patients with multiple myeloma has elevated concerns in clinical practice. While the introduction of novel therapeutic agents has substantially improved outcomes in younger patients with myeloma, poorer outcomes remain in older patients. Managing older patients requires a multidisciplinary team approach to consider factors that may influence both treatment selection and outcomes. Aging is associated with remodeling of vital organs, physiological downregulations of basal metabolism, susceptibility to multiple comorbidities with ultimate frailty, thereby con

A comprehensive survey of cancer medicines prices, availability and affordability in Ghana.

IntroductionIn Ghana, prices for cancer medicines are characterized by high retail markups, forex fluctuations and high variation in prices of medicines. Most patients cannot afford the cancer medicines. There is a problem of unaffordability and limited availability of essential cancer medicines which suggests potential inequity in patient access to cancer medicines. The study objective was to assess the prices, availability, and affordability of cancer medicines in Ghana. Prices of cancer medicines are a major contributor to the cost of treatment for cancer patients and the comparison of thes
