A previously healthy 53-year-old man died suddenly and unexpected. The main finding at the post mortem examination was a large 4th ventricle subependymoma, a rare brain tumour related to the ventricles of the brain. In 16 head injured patients, the monitoring of brain tissue oxygen pressure (ti-pO2) show 22 episodes of low ti-pO2 (< or = 12 mmHg). Mean episode duration was 16 h.
