Is There a Genetic Predisposition to Frozen Shoulder?: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder is a common disorder that leads to substantial functional loss for patients by impairing activities of daily living. It also adversely affects patients and society by impairing the ability to work. Its pathogenesis is not fully understood. The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the evidence suggesting a genetic link to frozen shoulder. METHODS: A literature search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases using relevant keywords revealed 5506 studies. After appropriate screening of titles, abstracts, and full stud

Ultrasound-Guided Elbow Procedures.

High-resolution ultrasonography can help clinicians visualize key anatomic structures of the elbow and guide periarticular and intra-articular injections. Historically, most procedures done around the elbow have been done using landmark guidance, and few studies have reported the accuracy of ultrasonography-guided injections in the elbow region. This article reviews common musculoskeletal disorders about the elbow that can be evaluated with ultrasonography, reviews the literature on ultrasonography-guided injections of the elbow region, and describes the senior author's preferred approach for

Usefulness of intra-articular botulinum toxin injections. A systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Botulinum toxin is a proven and widely used treatment for numerous conditions characterized by excessive muscular contractions. Recent studies have assessed the analgesic effect of botulinum toxin in joint pain and started to unravel its mechanisms. LITERATURE-SEARCH-METHODOLOGY: We searched the international literature via the Medline database using the term "intraarticular botulinum toxin injection" combined with any of the following terms: "knee", "ankle", "shoulder", "osteoarthritis", "adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder". RESULTS: Of 16 selected articles about intraarticular

Trigger point dry needling as an adjunct treatment for a patient with adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. BACKGROUND: Prognosis for adhesive capsulitis has been described as self-limiting and can persist for 1 to 3 years. Conservative treatment that includes physical therapy is commonly advised. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 54-year-old woman with primary symptoms of shoulder pain and loss of motion consistent with adhesive capsulitis. Manual physical therapy intervention initially consisted of joint mobilizations of the shoulder region and thrust manipulation of the cervicothoracic region. Although manual techniques seemed to result in some early functional impr

[The use of ultrasonic examination for the diagnosis of diseases of the locomotor system in cattle].

Besides the classical orthopedic examination, radiography and centesis of diseased synovial cavities ultrasonography was applied, for the first time, in 18 cattle for the investigation of proximal bovine limb disorders. The clinical and radiographic findings as well as the results of centesis were compared with the sonographic findings. Arthritis, tenosynovitis, bursitis, abscess formation and haematomas especially in proximal limb regions were observed. A 7,5 MHz linear-scan or a 5 MHz sector-scan were used for ultrasonic examination. By means of radiography, 8 out of 14 cattle showed a soft …

Geriatric foot disorders: how to avoid undertreating them.

Because the primary care physician often is the first health professional the elderly patient will consult about a foot problem--and because many conservative therapeutic measures are available and should be attempted before resorting to surgery--the primary care office can be an appropriate setting for foot care for the elderly. A brief review of foot anatomy is given, followed by a discussion of common disorders of the foot and conservative treatment measures.

Delayed appearance of popliteal cyst caused by a bullet.

A unique case of popliteal cyst apparently caused by a bullet that penetrated the knee joint 30 years previously was recently encountered. No similar case was found in the English-language literature (3, 9, 12). Removal of bullets adjacent to joints is recommended.

Genetic causal association between frozen shoulder and carpal tunnel syndrome: a two-sample mendelian randomization.

OBJECTIVE: Observational studies have suggested an association between frozen shoulder (FS) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, due to challenges in establishing a temporal sequence, the causal relationship between these two conditions remains elusive. This study, based on aggregated data from large-scale population-wide genome-wide association studies (GWAS), investigates the genetic causality between FS and CTS. METHODS: Initially, a series of quality control measures were employed to select single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) closely associated with the exposure factors. Two-samp

Immobilization, Lymphedema, and Obesity are Predictive Factors in the Development of Adhesive Capsulitis in Breast Cancer Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Adhesive capsulitis is a condition characterized by shoulder pain and stiffness. Breast cancer treatment has been linked to the development of this condition, but its mechanisms are still little known. This study's objective was to identify predictors factors associated with the development of adhesive capsulitis in breast cancer patients. METHODS: A case control study was performed with women undergoing treatment for breast cancer in a single center. The sampling was nonprobabilistic and consecutive. Adhesive capsulitis was defined as constant pain associated with decreased active

Effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation technique on the treatment of frozen shoulder: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Frozen shoulder is a common painful disease of the shoulder joint characterized by structural changes in the shoulder joint, restricting both active and passive shoulder joint activities. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) effectively improved and maintained the range of motion; however, it is not clear whether it can improve the shoulder joint structure in patients with frozen shoulder. This pilot study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) observation to assess the improvement of the local structure of the shoulder joint upon PNF treatment to elucidate

Effects of comorbidities on the outcomes of manipulation under anesthesia for primary stiff shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the effects of manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) for primary stiff shoulder when different comorbidities are present are lacking. Our aim was to assess how comorbidities influence the recovery speed and clinical outcomes after MUA. METHODS: Between April 2013 and September 2018, 281 consecutive primary stiff shoulders in the frozen phase treated with MUA were included in this study. We investigated the comorbidities of patients and divided them into the control (n = 203), diabetes mellitus (DM) (n = 32), hyperlipidemia (n = 26), and thyroid disorder (n = 20) groups. T

Platelet-rich plasma as a potential prophylactic measure against frozen shoulder in an in vivo shoulder contracture model.

INTRODUCTION: Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a common painful and functionally-limiting disease affecting around 2% of the population. So far, therapeutic options are limited and often unsatisfactory. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been used as a treatment option in other orthopedic diseases since it contains growth factors that stimulate tissue repair. So far, the effect of PRP on frozen shoulder lacks evidence. We hypothesized that PRP may be valuable in the prophylaxis and treatment of secondary frozen shoulder due to capsular remodeling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An experimental st
