Microcomputed tomographic analysis of the ulnar trochlear notch in medium- and large-breed canine cadavers with and without medial coronoid disease.

Medial coronoid disease (MCD) is a common disease often associated with thoracic limb lameness in medium- and large-breed dogs. The term MCD includes subchondral changes of the medial coronoid process (MCP), as well as pathologies of both cartilaginous surfaces. As there are only a few comprehensive and detailed studies on the trabecular structure of the medial coronoid, the goal of this study was to compare the trabecular structure of the ulnar trochlear notch of canine cadavers with and without MCD using different micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) parameters. Fifty-eight elbow joints fro…

Novel surgical approach to neoplastic lesions in the distal part of the urethra: A pilot cadaver study comparing open and hybrid techniques.

Tumours of the distal urethra in female dogs are often difficult to treat, and the surgical methods described thus far have technical limitations. This study aimed to present a novel approach to the surgical treatment of distal urethral tumours. This study used dog cadavers to evaluate the technical feasibility of surgically removing neoplastic lesions in the distal urethra and compared surgical outcomes of open surgery with those of hybrid surgery (combination of laparoscopy and open surgery). Open intact, open spayed, hybrid intact, and hybrid spayed dog cadaver groups underwent surgery (n =…

A missing distal complex of the external and internal anal sphincters: a macroscopic and histologic study using Japanese and German elderly cadavers.

The lower margin of the internal anal sphincter (IAS) is considered to lie on a J-shaped, subcutaneous part (SCP) of the external anal sphincter (EAS). The lower IAS is united with the J-shaped SCP to form a smooth-striated muscle complex. In the first part of this study, we ensured the presence of the J-shaped EAS in the lateral wall of the anal canal from 12 near-term fetuses. Second, in the lateral anal wall, the examination of the longitudinal section from 20 male and 24 female Japanese cadavers (72-95 years-old) demonstrated that the J-shaped EAS was lost in 15 (34%) due to the very small…

The 'multilayer' theory of Denonvilliers' fascia: anatomical dissection of cadavers with the aim to improve neurovascular bundle preservation during rectal mobilization.

AIM: Denonvilliers' fascia is thought to be a multilayered fascial structure, based on its embryological development with the neurovascular bundle embedded within it. Recently, this theory had been proven histologically and by confocal microscopy in many published articles. However, the literature does not report on how surgeons can identify these structures. We aimed to determine the optimal surgical approach for preserving these critical structures. METHOD: Eighteen cadavers (13 male/five female) were included and treated according to the ethical considerations stated in the donation consen…

The use of a hydrogel implant in the repair of osteochondral defects of the knee: A biomechanical evaluation of restoration of native contact pressures in cadaver knees.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondral injuries have been treated by a variety of methods, each having its own drawbacks. The purpose of this study was to determine the biomechanical feasibility of using a hydrogel implant replacement for an osteochondral core defect. The hypothesis of this study was that the contact pressure of the native knee can be recreated with the use of a hydrogel implant. METHODS: Six cadaver knees were tested in a knee simulator while contact pressures were measured on the tibial plateau. Pressure data was collected in the intact knee, after coring of the condyle and after insert…

Biomechanical evaluation of modified laryngoplasty by use of a toggle technique for stabilization of arytenoid cartilage in specimens obtained from equine cadavers.

OBJECTIVE To biomechanically compare modified and standard laryngoplasty constructs in monotonic load to failure and cyclic loading. SAMPLES 41 equine cadaveric larynges. PROCEDURES Laryngoplasty constructs were created by use of a standard technique on one side and a modified technique (with a toggle to anchor suture to the arytenoid cartilage) on the other side. For monotonic loading, laryngoplasty constructs were prepared and suture ends attached to a load frame; constructs then were loaded until mechanical failure. Mean load at failure and failure modes were compared between constructs. Fo…

Is the buccal compartment a masticatory space extension or an anatomic space in itself? Evidence based on medical images and human cadaver dissection.

OBJECTIVES: According to some authors, the buccal space is incompletely closed with no real anatomical separation from the masticator space, and also has no fascial limit toward the cranial and caudal regions. However, several other authors consider this anatomic area to be a separated space. The goal of this study was to provide a detailed description of the normal anatomy using medical images and human cadaveric head material dissection of this facial anatomic region, to precisely clarify its condition as an extension of the masticator space or an independent space. METHODS: The buccomasset…

Cadaver study of the topography of the musculotendinous junction of the finger extensor muscles: applicability to tendon rupture following closed wrist trauma.

Rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon in the wrist is a delayed complication that can occur after wrist injury. Several etiology-related hypotheses have been made to explain these ruptures. The one most commonly accepted is necrosis at the musculotendinous junction of the EPL, which is compressed between the extensor retinaculum and dorsal aspect of the radius. To confirm this hypothesis, we performed an anatomical study to show the close relationship between the extensor retinaculum and the musculotendinous junction of the EPL muscle. We calculated the distance between the musc
