Sand flies were collected in light traps and on oiled papers at four active case sites of human cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania tropica at Muruku Sublocation, Laikipia District, Kenya. Nearly 5,200 females of five species, including Phlebotomus guggisbergi, were dissected and examined for flagellates. Of 3,867 P. guggisbergi females collected at a multiple case site, 168 (4.3%) harbored mature infections (to include metacyclic promastigotes) of flagellates morphologically identical to Leishmania, while all other flies were negative. Of the infected flies, 164 were collected in a cave

Two cases of trigeminal neuralgia associated with the primitive trigeminal artery are reported. From 1981, the authors have treated 131 trigeminal neuralgia patients with microvascular decompression. Among them, we encountered two rare cases of trigeminal neuralgia associated with the primitive trigeminal artery (PTA) and its variant (PTAV). Case 1 is a 74-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital due to pain of maxilla and mandible. We diagnosed her pain as trigeminal neuralgia. Preoperative angiogram showed the primitive trigeminal artery arising from the cavernous portion of the right

Evaluation of neurovascular compression-related trigeminal neuralgia (NVC-TN) and its resolution through microvascular decompression are demonstrable by MRI and intraoperatively [Leal et al. (Atrophic changes in the trigeminal nerves of patients with trigeminal neuralgia due to neurovascular compression and their association with the severity of compression and clinical outcomes: Clinical article. J Neurosurg. 2014;120(6):1484-1495)]. Non-NVC-TNs treated by radiofrequency (RF) lack such detectable features. Multimodal integration of pre-surgical diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and volumetry (VO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Kelp forests provide myriad ecosystem services to human society, many of which are being eroded by climate-driven extreme events, before they have been measured. Here, we assess how dive tourism in giant kelp forests (Macrocystis pyrifera) has been impacted by marine heatwaves over three decades in southeast Tasmania.
METHODS: Dive trip logs and business records were compiled from 1991-2021 from the Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania. Dives sites were georeferenced and matched to the dominant habitat (e.g. cave, wreck, sponge garden, kelp forest) for each dive site. The distribut

Extracranial trigeminal schwannomas are rare benign nerve sheath tumors whose management remains challenging due to anatomical complexity and limited high-quality evidence. This systematic review characterized their clinical presentation, anatomical distribution, and treatment outcomes, and assessed the availability of radiotherapy data for purely extracranial lesions. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251276199). PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception to January 2026; eligible studies were analyzed with respect to clinica

Understanding how naturally occurring genetic variation shapes human health and disease is critical for improving diagnosis and treatment strategies. The Mexican cavefish, Astyanax mexicanus, represents a powerful system for evolutionary medicine, enabling investigation of naturally evolved mechanisms of resilience to disease-related traits including diabetes, obesity, insomnia, and eye loss. Larval A. mexicanus, like zebrafish, are transparent, allowing whole-brain imaging, circuit mapping, and the generation of computationally derived atlases that precisely quantify neuroanatomical differenc

OBJECTIVES: Venous compression is an underrecognized cause of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and remains controversial due to its subtle imaging manifestations, variable anatomy, and uncertain optimal surgical management. This study aimed to clarify the anatomical spectrum of venous offenders, evaluate surgical outcomes, and explore the role of adjunctive trigeminal nerve combing (NC) in selected cases.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 31 patients with primary TN who underwent microvascular decompression (MVD) between 2017 and 2023 and were confirmed intraoperatively to have pure venous compre

BACKGROUND: Echocardiographic findings suggesting hemodynamic compromise can precede clinical deterioration in cardiac tamponade. We aim to validate echocardiographic predictors for tamponade and construct a simple imaging-based risk stratification model to guide prompt management plans.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied consecutive patients who presented with at least moderate pericardial effusion. Patients with atrial fibrillation, greater than moderate pulmonary hypertension, or mechanical ventilation were excluded. Patients were identified as having cardiac tamponade if the intrapericar

INTRODUCTION: The clamping force for surgical head immobilization must be sufficiently large enough to prevent slippage but not to induce fracturing. Motivated by an unmet need to detect skull fractures during surgery to trigger remedial action, we sought to demonstrate a method of viable measurement and interpretation of acoustic emissions (AEs) generated by a fracturing skull prior, during, and after a fracture.
METHODS: Escalating clamping force via skull pins affixed to an Integra Life Sciences Mayfield® skull clamp was applied to a formalin-fixed cadaveric head. Variable and pathologic s

In order to study the prevention and control technology for hard roof type coal burst in the isolated working face of the Chenjiashan coal mine, the 418 isolated working face was selected as the engineering case study. Based on the different impact danger zones and mining areas, a roof breaking blasting pressure relief technical scheme was proposed. The anti-impact effect was verified through hole peeping and infrared radiation data. The research shows: (1) According to the geological conditions of the 418 working face of the Chenjiashan coal mine, the working face is divided into weak impact

DNA analysis of ancient, desiccated feces - termed paleofeces - can unlock insights into the lives of ancient peoples, including through examination of the gut microbiome and identification of specific pathogens and parasites. We collected desiccated feces from the Cave of the Dead Children (La Cueva de Los Muertos Chiquitos) in the Rio Zape Valley in Mexico dated to 725-920 CE, for targeted pathogen analysis. First, we extracted DNA with methods previously optimized for paleofeces. Then, we applied highly sensitive modern molecular tools (i.e., PCR pre-amplification followed by multi-parallel

Here we describe new fossil material of Antillothrix bernensis, a Pleistocene-Holocene primate taxon from Hispaniola. It is now represented by seven crania, five mandibles, and dozens of postcranial elements from several paleontologically rich cave systems. The five adult crania included here share a similar overall profile as well as specific features such as a deep depression at the glabella. The complete anterior dentition of Antillothrix can now be described for the first time; short canine crowns, in the apicobasal dimension, compare well with titi monkeys, but the new crania and mandible

Springtails (subclass: Collembola) represent one of the most extensively studied invertebrate groups in soil ecotoxicology. This is because of their ease of laboratory culture, significant ecological role, and sensitivity to environmental contaminants. Folsomia candida (family: Isotomidae) is a globally widespread parthenogenetic species that is prevalent in laboratory toxicity testing with springtails. Conversely, Arrhopalites caecus (family: Arrhopalitidae), a parthenogenic globular springtail species, remains untested in soil ecotoxicology. This species is found in diverse habitats, includi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Around 20-40% of trigeminal schwannomas (TS) are dumbbell shaped, spanning the middle and posterior cranial fossa The petrous apex is often truncated in these patients, aiding surgical resection of both compartments through the middle fossa approach. However, a less eroded petrous creates a blind spot, making total resection difficult. This study describes the feasibility of an approach combining expanded Meckel cave access with tailored petrous bone drilling to optimize tumor visualization and resection.
METHODS: Eleven patients with dumbbell TS and minimal petrous

BACKGROUND: Cranial neuropathy is a principal disease manifestation of neurosarcoidosis, but many forms remain poorly described, including trigeminal nerve disease despite its frequency in reported cohorts (5-12%). Herein, we characterize the clinical course of patients with neurosarcoidosis involving the trigeminal nerve.
METHODS: A single-center retrospective cohort analysis of patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis involving the trigeminal nerve was conducted between 1/1/2000-3/7/2023.
RESULTS: The trigeminal nerve was affected in 14/245 (5.7%) patients, being clinically symptomatic in 5

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) has been regarded as a simple and effective remedy for trigeminal neuralgia. This study aims to retrospectively analyze the correlation between intraoperative balloon shapes and postoperative outcomes.
METHOD: Those consecutive PBC cases performed in our department between 2019 and 2022 were reviewed. According to the intraoperative balloon figures, they were cataloged as headless pear, slim pear, bottle gourd, and winter melon groups. The degree of pain or numbness was quantified using the visual analog scale. Those pain-free

INTRODUCTION: Trigeminal ganglion stimulation is a neuromodulatory surgical procedure utilized to treat trigeminal neuropathic pain. This technique involves the placement of a stimulating electrode adjacent to the trigeminal ganglion and can be trialed before permanent implantation. Wider adoption by surgical practitioners is currently limited by complications such as lead migration from the trigeminal ganglion, which can result in loss of therapy and cannot be rectified without repeat surgery. We describe a novel surgical modification that successfully anchors the trigeminal ganglion electrod

Traditionally, paleontologists have relied on the morphological features of bones and teeth to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships of extinct animals.1 In recent decades, the analysis of ancient DNA recovered from macrofossils has provided a powerful means to evaluate these hypotheses and develop novel phylogenetic models.2 Although a great deal of life history data can be extracted from bones, their scarcity and associated biases limit their information potential. The paleontological record of Beringia3-the unglaciated areas and former land bridge between northeast Eurasia and northwes
