Transglutaminase-catalyzed preparation of crosslinked carboxymethyl chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose/collagen composite membrane for postsurgical peritoneal adhesion prevention.

Peritoneal adhesion is a general complication following pelvic and abdominal surgery, which may lead to chronic abdominal pain, bowel obstruction, organ injury, and female infertility. Biodegradable polymer membranes have been suggested as physical barriers to prevent peritoneum adhesion. In this work, a transglutaminase (TGase)-catalyzed crosslinked carboxymethyl chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose/collagen (CMCS/CMCL/COL) composite anti-adhesion membrane with various proportions of CMCS, CMCL, and COL (40/40/20, 35/35/30, 25/25/50) was developed. After crosslinking by TGase, the composite anti-…

Controlled release of drugs from cellulose acetate matrices produced from sugarcane bagasse: monitoring by square-wave voltammetry.

In this paper, cellulose triacetate (CTA) was produced from sugarcane bagasse and used as matrices for controlled release of paracetamol. Symmetric and asymmetric membranes were obtained by formulations of CTA/dichloromethane/drug and CTA/dichloromethane/water/drug, respectively, and they were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Different morphologies of membranes were observed by SEM, and the incorporation of paracetamol was confirmed by lowering of the glass transition temperature (Tg) in the DSC curves. This indicates the existenc…

Bulky quaternary alkylammonium counterions enhance the nanodispersibility of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-oxidized cellulose in diverse solvents.

The degree of nanodispersion of cellulose in diverse solvents is a significant primary criterion for the preparation of bulk nanocelluloses and nanocellulose-containing composites. Here, high degrees of nanodispersion of fibrous 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-oxidized cellulose (TOC) were achieved in various solvents by efficiently incorporating quaternary alkylammoniums (QAs) as counterions of TOC carboxyl groups via simple ion-exchange treatment in water. Tetramethyl-, tetraethyl-, tetra-n-propyl-, and tetra-n-butylammoniums were used as the QAs. The TOC-QAs were converted to TOC nanof…

Cellulose acetate polymer thrombosis for the emergency treatment of aneurysms: angiographic findings, clinical experience, and histopathological study.

Cellulose acetate polymer solution is a liquid thrombotic material that hardens into the shape of an aneurysm into which it is injected. Therapy using this solution is a rapid technique that helps prevent the rupture of aneurysms, especially those that extravasate contrast material during angiography in the acute stage of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Using this polymer solution and an endovascular technique, we treated two patients who had aneurysms of the basilar and anterior communicating arteries with extravasation of contrast material during angiography a few hours after the initial subarachno…

Hemostatic agents: brain tissue reaction and effectiveness. A comparative animal study using collagen fleece and oxidized cellulose.

In a series of 26 young rabbits, three cortical lesions were made in each hemisphere. Two of these holes were filled with collagen fleece (CF) and oxidized cellulose (OC), respectively, while the third was left empty as a control. The bleeding time was measured. Hemostasis with CF was statistically significantly faster than with OC, which in turn was statistically significantly faster than with no hemostatic agent. The animals were killed successively on Days 7, 14, 28, 42, and 241 after operation. Histopathological investigation showed that CF did not induce more tissue reaction that the cont…

Application of cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose degradation by beta-glucosidase and vaginal microbes to toxic shock syndrome.

Eleven bacterial and two yeast strains, four of which were previously identified as having activity on a lightly cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose (CLD-2) found in one type of superabsorbent tampon, were grown on a variety of substrates, most containing cellulosics. None produced detectable amounts of cellulases, but all elaborated beta-glucosidase. None of these 13 strains nor 3 commercially obtained beta-glucosidase preparations could hydrolyze CLD-2, although a commercial cellulase and two other bacterial preparations known to produce cellulases could. Based on these results, it appears …

Effect of Graft Development in PLLA-Functionalized Cellulose Nanocrystals on Dispersibility, Transparency, and Mechanical Reinforcement in PLA Nanocomposites.

Despite their potential as reinforcing agents for poly(lactic acid) (PLA), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) tend to self-aggregate, limiting both optical transparency and mechanical reinforcement. In this study, incorporating poly(L-lactic acid)-grafted CNCs (LCNCs) into PLA simultaneously enhanced both optical transparency and mechanical reinforcement compared to neat CNCs. Three types of LCNCs-LCNC1 (apparent molar substitution, MSapp = 3.36), LCNC2 (MSapp = 25.6), and LCNC3 (MSapp = 56.9)-were synthesized. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectra re…

Effects of sustainable bamboo-derived cellulose nanocrystals on the mechanical performance and antibacterial potential of dental resin composites.

Dental resin composites require improved durability and resistance to bacterial colonization, while sustainable and biocompatible fillers remain desirable. This study developed dental resin composites incorporating bamboo-derived cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and evaluated their mechanical and antibacterial potential. CNCs were extracted from bamboo powder through sequential alkaline and oxidative treatments followed by acid hydrolysis and dialysis. The rod-like CNCs were incorporated at 0, 1.5, and 3 wt% into a UDMA/TetraEGDMA resin matrix containing 50 wt% Sr-SiO₂ glass fillers. Morphology a…
