A rare case of Ewing's sarcoma primary of the cervical spine in a 1-year-old child: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Ewing sarcoma is a rare and malignant bone tumor that can primarily affect the cervical spine. Symptoms may not always be present, but muscle weakness is a critical indicator of disease progression and necessitates urgent surgical intervention to relieve pressure on the spinal cord. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a child who experienced sudden muscle weakness in the left upper limb. An MRI of the spine revealed a tumor in the cervical spine compressing the spinal cord. Urgent surgical intervention was performed, successfully removing most of the tumor.

Topological optimization of anterior cervical plate (ACP) and its biomechanic characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Currently, quadrilateral anterior cervical plate (QACP) is a highly prevalent ACP. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to design a novel ACP using topology optimization (TOACP). METHODS: A completed model for C1-C7 cervical segments was established and validated. QACP and TOACP cage systems were implanted within two cervical vertebrae models, respectively, and peak stresses and stress distributions for screw, plate, endplate and cage displacement were investigated under differing exercise modes. RESULTS: Stress levels upon QACP screw were maximized for over-extension exercise (243.3 MPa,…

The contribution of cervical dynamic magnetic resonance imaging to the surgical treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

AIM: Cervical spine is the most kinetic segment of the whole vertebrae. The radiologic imaging methods concern with the morphologic changes but give no functional data. At flexion, spinal cord strains, anterior osteophytic compression increases. At extension, spinal canal gets narrower, cord shortens and gets thicker, compression of posterior ligament gets abberant and cord compression increases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 258 cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) cases were scanned by conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and additionally dynamic MRI. Contributions of dynamic cervical MRI

Cervical epidural arteriovenous fistula with radiculopathy mimicking cervical spondylosis.

A 65-year-old woman presented with a rare case of cervical epidural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) manifesting as radiculopathy of the right upper extremity that mimicked cervical spondylosis. She had a 2-month history of gradually progressive right-hand motor weakness and sensory disturbance. The initial diagnosis was cervical disk herniation. However, computed tomography with contrast medium showed abnormal enhancement at the right C5-6 and C6-7 intervertebral foramina. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with gadolinium disclosed an enhanced abnormal epidural mass at the dorsal surface of the dura

Cervical and lumbar spinal changes diagnosed in four-view radiographs of 732 military pilots.

BACKGROUND: Pilots who fly jet fighters or helicopters frequently experience vertebral problems due to acceleration and vibration, wearing helmets and other headgear, and sitting in suboptimal postures. METHODS: We looked for spondylarthritic or spondylitic changes in 4-view radiographs (AP, lateral, left and right oblique) of the cervical and lumbar vertebrae of 732 pilots and 202 non-flying controls. The subjects included 91 F-16 jet pilots, 363 other jet pilots, 119 transport pilots, and 159 helicopter pilots. RESULTS: The prevalence of cervical changes in helicopter pilots was 19%, signi

Cervical origin of left subclavian artery: A rare anomaly.

A 22-year-old lady was referred to our institute for the management of pulmonary atresia with hypoplastic pulmonary arteries. Computed tomographic Angiography (CTA) showed right aortic arch with left brachicephalic artery as the first branch, which trifurcated into internal carotid, external carotid and subclavian artery high up in the neck at the level of third cervical vertebra. The left subclavian artery then travelled back caudally and entered into the arm after giving rise to a large collateral artery. This is the first ever-reported case of cervical origin of left subclavian artery (COLS

Ventilatory failure and successful management for a dog with severe cervical meningioma.

A 12-year-old intact male mongrel dog with a weight of 22 kg was referred with a complaint of progressive tetraparesis. Cervical myelography revealed an intradural-extramedullary mass at the second cervical vertebra. After computed tomography (CT) under general anesthesia, the patient showed dyspnea and cyanosis caused by insufficient movement of the chest wall. Positive pressure ventilation was therefore initiated. Hemilaminectomy and partial mass removal were performed 12 hr after the CT. The mass was histopathologically diagnosed as meningioma. Gradual weaning from the mechanical ventilatio

A new eusauropod (Dinosauria, Sauropodomorpha) from the Middle Jurassic of Gansu, China.

Sauropod dinosaurs were gigantic quadrupedal herbivores. They range from Early Jurassic to Late Cretaceous and have been found on all continents. The rich sauropod faunas in the Middle and Late Jurassic of China are mainly from southern or western China. Here, we describe a non-neosauropod eusauropod from the Middle Jurassic Xinhe Formation of Gansu Province, northwestern China, based on an associated partial skeleton that includes a nearly complete skull with mandible, the five anteriormost cervical vertebrae appressed with the skull and the posterior 29 articulated caudal vertebrae. It can b…

A Rare Case Report of Impacted Foreign Body (Sewing Needle) in Upper Neck.

THE RATIONALE: A 19-year-old female presented to the Otorhinolaryngology Department. PATIENT CONCERNS: Pain over the right side of the neck below the angle of the mandible following a fall on a pin cushion after a fight with her brother. She reported that the wound might have been caused by a sewing needle lodged in the pin cushion. DIAGNOSIS: X-ray soft-tissue neck lateral view revealed a radiopaque linear shadow on the right side of the neck at the level of the C1-C2 vertebrae. On contrast-enhanced computed tomography, a linear (needle-like) foreign body at the level of C1-C2 was approxima

A Rare Case of Epithelioid Hemangioma Presenting as an Isolated Sacral Mass.

Epithelioid hemangioma (EH) is an uncommon benign vascular tumor of mesenchymal origin. It mainly presents as expanding nodules around the ear, the forehead, and long bones. Only a handful of cases have been found in cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral vertebrae as lytic lesions with pain and neurological impairment. We present the case of a 36-year-old female with an incidental finding of a sacral mass along with inguinal lymphadenopathy on imaging. Initially, there were no symptoms. The mass gradually progressed and later showed an extraosseous extension with involvement of sacral neural

Cervico-thoracic vertebral subluxation in sheep: Awareness among veterinarians of a rare syndrome.

Cervico-thoracic vertebral subluxation (CTVS) in sheep is a collective term that is used to describe various conditions that concomitantly affect the cervical and thoracic vertebrae, leading to their collapse. The aetiology and pathophysiology of CTVS remain unknown. The objective of this study was to conduct an epidemiological farm investigation and describe the clinicopathological findings of CTVS cases occurring in a flock of sheep; as well as to determine awareness of CTVS among sheep producers and ruminant veterinarians in Australia. Diagnostic imaging revealed severe deformities in the v

Successful completion of pregnancy after Mustard procedure for transposition of great arteries: a rare case from the developing world.

A new basal ornithopod dinosaur, based on two nearly complete articulated skeletons, is reported from the Lujiatun Beds (Yixian Fm, Lower Cretaceous) of western Liaoning Province (China). Some of the diagnostic features of Changmiania liaoningensis nov. gen., nov. sp. are tentatively interpreted as adaptations to a fossorial behavior, including: fused premaxillae; nasal laterally expanded, overhanging the maxilla; shortened neck formed by only six cervical vertebrae; neural spines of the sacral vertebrae completely fused together, forming a craniocaudally-elongated continuous bar; fused scapul…

Spinal cord compression secondary to a thoracic vertebral osteochondroma.

The authors describe a case of spinal cord compression due to an osteochondroma arising from the T-6 vertebral body in a patient with hereditary multiple exostoses. This 16-year-old boy presented with spastic paraparesis. Surgical decompression was followed by resolution of the neurological impairments. Osteochondroma is the most common bone tumor. The distribution of osteochondromas greatly favors the extremities and these lesions rarely arise in the vertebral column. Osteochondromas occur in 2 distinct clinical settings--as solitary or multiple tumors, the latter being often associated with

Lower extremity loads stimulate bone formation in the vertebral column: implications for osteoporosis.

Senile osteoporosis is a growing national health problem. The purpose of this study was to determine whether loads applied through the lower extremity would stimulate bone formation in the vertebral column, the site of most osteoporotic fractures. Female white New Zealand rabbits were divided into experimental (EG) and control (CG) groups. The right hind leg of the EG was repetitively loaded to 1.5 X body weight, 20 min/day for three weeks; the CG was "sham loaded". Bone formation in both groups was labeled using tetracycline. Labeled osteons, resorption spaces, surface bone formation, and por

Differential segmental growth of the vertebral column of the rat (Rattus norvegicus).

Despite the pervasive occurrence of segmental morphologies in the animal kingdom, the study of segmental growth is almost entirely lacking, but may have significant implications for understanding the development of these organisms. We investigate the segmental and regional growth of the entire vertebral column of the rat (Rattus norvegicus) by fitting a Gompertz curve to length and age data for each vertebra and each vertebral region. Regional lengths are calculated by summing constituent vertebral lengths and intervertebral space lengths for cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and caudal regi
