In Germany, one dose of varicella vaccination has been recommended for children aged <24 months since 2004, and 2 doses have been recommended since 2009. Vaccination coverage (VC) is above 80% for one dose and 60% for 2 doses. In this study, data on varicella- and shingles-associated hospitalizations before and after vaccine introduction were assessed. Based on ICD-coded data of the main diagnosis of hospitalized cases from 1995-2012 in Germany, annual age-adjusted and age-specific hospitalization incidences (cases/100,000; HI) were calculated. HI means 1995-2003 (pre-vaccination-period) versu

BACKGROUND: Varicella vaccine is available in the private sector in China, with a single dose currently recommended for children aged ≥12 months. We investigated a varicella outbreak in a school in Beijing with high varicella vaccination coverage to describe the outbreak, examine risk factors for vaccine failure, and calculate vaccine effectiveness.
METHODS: A varicella case was defined as an acute generalized maculopapular rash without other apparent cause in a student without prior varicella attending the elementary school during August 30-December 28, 2010. Varicella among vaccinated stude

Speculation that a universal varicella vaccination program might lead to an increase in herpes zoster (HZ) incidence has been supported by modeling studies that assume that exposure to varicella boosts immunity and protects against reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) as HZ. Such studies predict an increase in HZ incidence until the adult population becomes predominantly composed of individuals with vaccine-induced immunity who do not harbor wild-type VZV. In the United States, a varicella vaccination program was implemented in 1995. Since then, studies monitoring HZ incidence have sho

Widespread immunization programmes have had a dramatic effect on the morbidity associated with varicella in the USA; mortality has declined by 66% (from 0.41 to 0.14 deaths / million population) and the reduction in hospitalizations is at least 4-fold (from 2.7 to 0.6/100,000 population) compared with the pre-vaccination era. Although varicella outbreaks have occurred in vaccination areas, these data may underestimate the true efficacy of the varicella vaccine, and there is still the potential for two-dose programmes, which have not yet been fully explored in the USA or Canada. Catch-up vaccin

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a stable virus showing relatively little variation. Nevertheless, recent data have shown there to be at least four distinct viral strains. For the most part these are geographically segregated, but in areas of the world such as the UK, where mixed populations live, there is evidence for spread of all the genotypes. Little is known about the biological differences, if any, between these strains, yet recent data have shown that even a single nucleic acid change can affect the biological behaviour of the virus. The Oka vaccine has been licensed for mass vaccination

Complications in two varicella zoster virus (VZV) vaccinated children with leukemia in remission are reported. Case I presented with varicella on day 30 after vaccination, with a relapse on day 49 and development of zoster on day 70. VZV was detected in vesicles by PCR on days 49 and 70. Case II presented with varicella on day 32 after vaccination, and VZV was detected in vesicles and nasal secretion. The manifestations were mild and responded to treatment. PCR methods were directed toward the R5 and PS regions. The virus from the two children was unambiguously identified as the Oka vaccine st

The initial motives behind development of vaccines were to protect against life-threatening infections (eg, rabies, diphtheria), to eradicate sweeping outbreaks of serious diseases (eg, paralytic poliomyelitis, smallpox), and to prevent diseases in a vulnerable population by the immunization of surrogates (eg, rubella immunization to prevent congenital rubella syndrome). Now a fourth motive emerges: prevention of less serious infections to improve quality of life. The advantages of new vaccines and immunization programs should no longer be measured exclusively in terms of the number of lives s

OBJECTIVE: Attention is drawn to possible disadvantages arising from the introduction of universal varicella vaccination in infancy.
METHODOLOGY: Comparisons are made between universal infant varicella vaccination and the current measles immunization programme, and a review of current literature on age-specific complications of varicella and cost-benefit analyses of varicella vaccination.
RESULTS: Universal infant vaccination will cause a greater proportion of varicella cases to occur in adults, including pregnant women, who are at greater risk of serious complications compared to children.

Simian varicella virus (SVV) was first isolated in 1966 from African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) imported from Nairobi, Kenya, to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom (UK) (Clarkson et al., Arch Gesamte Virusforsch 22:219-234, 1967). SVV infection caused severe disease that resulted in a 56% case fatality rate (CFR) in the imported animals within 48 h of the appearance of a varicella-like rash (Clarkson et al., Arch Gesamte Virusforsch 22:219-234, 1967; Hemme et al., Am J Trop Med Hyg 94:1095-1099, 2016). The deceased animals presented with fever, widespre

Varicella is a highly prevalent infectious disease with a similar transmission pathway to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-COVID-19 nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) have been implemented to prevent the spread of the infection. This study aims to analyze varicella's epidemiological characteristics and further investigate the effect of anti-COVID-19 NPIs on varicella in Xi'an, northwestern China. Based on the varicella surveillance data, search engine indices, meteorological factors from 2011 to 2021 in Xi'an, and different levels of emerge
