Skatepark injuries and the influence of skatepark design: a one year consecutive case series.

Skateboarding and in-line skating are popular activities that attract millions of participants yearly and have spawned the development of skateparks (SPs). This study examined the types and distribution of injuries within a local commercial SP. Subjects were prospectively enrolled in a university Emergency Department (ED) after an injury at a local SP. One hundred subjects were enrolled over 1 year, representing 102 episodes and 106 injuries. Musculoskeletal injuries accounted for 80% of all injuries. Fractures and dislocations were the most frequent injuries (59%); six required operative mana

Prevalence and pattern of lower extremity injuries due to road traffic crashes in Fako Division, Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: Low and middle income countries are disproportionately affected with road traffic injuries and the lower extremity is one of the most affected anatomical body parts. There exist very limited data on the pattern of lower extremity injuries in the Cameroon especially in the South West Region. We therefore, hypothesized that lower limb injuries are common in road traffic crashes and motorized two wheelers are the commonest cause. METHODS: This was a hospital based prospective, cross sectional study. It involved four hospitals (Limbe and Buea Regional Hospitals, Baptist hospital Mut

Vulnerability within families headed by teen and young adult mothers investigated by child welfare services in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Young mothers' families are at increased risk of child maltreatment and other poor health and social outcomes. METHODS: Chi-square analyses of pooled child welfare services data from the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (CIS-2003; CIS-2008) were used to compare 284 teen mothers (18 years or younger) and 800 young mothers (19-21 years) and their families with 5752 families where the mother was 22 years or older. RESULTS: Twenty-six percent of young mothers were 18 years or younger. Most (68% of teen-mother families and 57% of families with a young adu

Effects of the Sunny Days, Healthy Ways curriculum on students in grades 6 to 8.

BACKGROUND: There are few effective sun-safety education programs for use in secondary schools. Project aims were to create a sun-safety curriculum for grades 6 to 8, and to test whether exposure to the curriculum would increase children's sun-protection behavior. DESIGN: A pair-matched, group-randomized, pre--post test, controlled trial was performed with middle schools as the unit of randomization. Teachers implemented the six-unit sun-safety curriculum in 2001-2003, and analyses were performed in 2003-2004. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: A total of 2038 children from 30 middle schools in Colorado,

Predictors of seronegativity to HBV vaccine in infants of HBsAg-positive mothers in a national prevention program.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Seronegativity following perinatal hepatitis B prophylaxis increases the risk of horizontal infection. This study analyzed 20 years of data from the Korean Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) to identify factors associated with hepatitis B vaccine seronegativity after immunoprophylaxis in infants born to HBsAg-positive mothers. METHODS: The study population comprised 233,455 mother-infant pairs from 2002 to 2021, identified by linking the PHBPP database with National Health Insurance Service data. Among the 154,351 pairs with initial post-vaccination serologic

Two-phase study to optimise diagnosis and treatment for children and adolescents with tuberculosis in Namibia: knowledge, attitudes and practices of healthcare workers before and after the rollout of updated child and adolescent tuberculosis clinical guidelines.

INTRODUCTION: Child and adolescent tuberculosis (CATB) poses a significant global burden with an estimated 1.25 million diagnoses and 191 000 deaths annually, disproportionately higher than adult rates. Over half of CATB cases remain unreported, and burden increases are expected following the USA's tuberculosis (TB) aid withdrawal, particularly affecting high-burden countries including Namibia. Namibian children under the age of 15 years account for 10% of notified TB cases, with under-reporting suggesting higher actual morbidity and mortality. Through a multistakeholder process in 2024, Namib

Attachment Patterns in Children and Adolescents With Gender Dysphoria.

The current study examines patterns of attachment/self-protective strategies and rates of unresolved loss/trauma in children and adolescents presenting to a multidisciplinary gender service. Fifty-seven children and adolescents (8.42-15.92 years; 24 birth-assigned males and 33 birth-assigned females) presenting with gender dysphoria participated in structured attachment interviews coded using dynamic-maturational model (DMM) discourse analysis. The children with gender dysphoria were compared to age- and sex-matched children from the community (non-clinical group) and a group of school-age chi

Measuring socioeconomic and health financing inequality in maternal mortality in Colombia: a mixed methods approach.

BACKGROUND: Understanding health financing reforms and means is key to evaluate how maternal health has improved. Problems related to health financing policies are contributing to inadequate quality of care and inequitable use of healthcare by pregnant women, resulting in poor maternal health outcomes. The purpose of the study was to measure socioeconomic and health financing related inequality in maternal mortality in Colombia as well as identifying potential epicenters of this inequality. METHODS: The data used was obtained from National Information of Social Protection (Sispro), the Depart

Inpatient management of severe malnutrition: time for a change in protocol and practice.

This review focuses on how to reduce the high mortality of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in African hospitals. The World Health Organization's 1999 manual for physicians (protocol) has not resulted in case-fatality rates of under 5%, even in published research studies from Africa, far less in district and central hospitals which do not record case-fatality rates. It is suggested that the following eight changes to the protocol need to be considered if we are serious about reducing case-fatality rates in African hospitals: (1) use of low lactose, low osmolality milk feeds during the early sta

Prevalence of chronic venous insufficiency and deep vein thrombosis in cirrhotic patients.

SUMMARY: People with cirrhosis of the liver are at risk for complications that can worsen their quality of life and increase morbidity and mortality. Contrary to previous beliefs, cirrhosis does not protect against the development of thromboembolic events, and cirrhotic patients may have higher rates of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The study of chronic venous disease and its impact on patients with cirrhosis is unknown in the literature and may be an important fact since this condition also had impact on quality of life and morbidity. The aim of this study is to evaluate t

Evaluation of Two Approaches for Responding to Allegations of Family Maltreatment in the U.S. Army: Coordinated Community Response Impacts and Costs.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Air Force (USAF) conducted a program of research to develop and disseminate reliable and valid criteria for partner and child maltreatment (comprising abuse [physical, emotional/psychological, and sexual] and neglect). These criteria are now used in all branches of the U.S. military. The U.S. Army was the first service outside the USAF to adopt the criteria sets and computerized decision support tool but maintained the original committee composition (the "Case Review Committee" [CRC]) instead of adopting the entire assessment, allegation determination, and treatment plan

Universal Prevention Exposure as a Moderator of the Community Context: Findings from the PROSPER Project.

This study examined how participation in a universal family skills-building program may interact with community risks and resources to produce youth outcomes. Prior research has noted community-level variability in risk and protective factors, but thus far no study has examined the role that participation on a community-wide intervention may play in moderating the effects of community risks or resources. The study included 14 communities (seven in Iowa, seven in Pennsylvania) that implemented a family focused evidence-based program as part of the PROSPER project. Community level variables incl
