INTRODUCTION: Treatment of subcondylar fractures of the mandible is one of the most controversial aspects in the field of maxillofacial traumatology. This controversy centers on the positive and negative aspects of open and closed approaches for the treatment of this kind of fractures. Open techniques lead to good reduction and osteosynthesis, but have a high risk of injury to the facial nerve and produce facial scars. Closed techniques (intermaxillary fixation) reduce all the above-mentioned risks but rarely produce correct anatomic reduction, and complications such as ankylosis, condylar nec

Although the optimal treatment for femur shaft fracture is intramedullary nailing fixation, nonunion still occurs. We determined the oligotrophic nonunion rate among femur fractures managed operatively and identified risk factors for reoperation. This was a retrospective clinical study. The data of the patients between 40 and 70 years old with diaphyseal femur fracture who have received reamed and interlocked intramedullary nailing fixation in our hospital from February 2014 to April 2018 were collected. They were followed at regular intervals for at least 1 year after the operation. The prima

CASE: An 86-year-old man underwent closed reduction and internal fixation of a comminuted intertrochanteric hip fracture with a cephalomedullary nail on a Hana table. Postoperatively, a displaced fracture subluxation of L1 was detected, resulting in complete loss of motor and sensory function below L1. Urgent posterior decompression and fusion from T10-L4 was performed. Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) was only diagnosed after the incident.
CONCLUSION: A diagnosis of DISH, with increased risk of occult fracture and/or iatrogenic spine injury during hip fixation, may be unknown

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the effects of associated factors like age, fracture level, accompanying fibular fractures and wound condition on healing by determining and comparing union scores of pediatric tibial fractures (PTFs).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-five patients with 46 PTFs (32 males, 13 females; mean age 9.5 years; range 2 to 16 years) who were treated by closed reduction and casting or operated between January 2016 and January 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. The union scores were evaluated at the end of fourth, sixth and eighth weeks and compared to each other.

BACKGROUND: During closed reduction of displaced distal radius fractures, physical examination is used to determine the need for further manipulation before radiographic confirmation and cast application. Manipulation performed under ultrasound guidance has the potential to decrease the number of reduction attempts.
METHODS: This multicentre randomised controlled trial was undertaken between December 2018 and July 2020 in the ED of four hospitals in the Netherlands. Patients aged ≥16 years presenting to the ED with a distal radius fracture requiring closed reduction were randomised to either

CASE REPORT: Traumatic hip dislocations require prompt diagnosis and reduction to preserve the native joint. The classic irreducible posterior hip fracture-dislocation has been described as an immobile, slightly flexed, and internally rotated hip on physical exam. Classically, this irreducible pattern is associated with an ipsilateral femoral head fracture. The purpose of our report is to present an irreducible posterior hip dislocation with preserved motion in the setting of an unstable pelvic ring injury without associated femoral head pathology. Despite lacking clinical features of an irred

We report a rare case of simultaneous dorsal dislocation of 4 ulnar carpometacarpal joints and dorsoradial dislocation of the trapezium with an associated fracture of the scaphoid tuberosity. The injuries were diagnosed early and treated successfully with closed reduction and transfixation using Kirschner wires. The functional results were excellent at 17-month follow-up.

Presented is a case report of a tibialis posterior tendon rupture associated with a closed ankle fracture. The treatment is open reduction and fixation at the bony fragments with primary repair of the tendon. This injury, although rare, illustrates that soft-tissue injuries must be considered in the management of unusual or complex fractures.

Fractures of the thumb metacarpal base are uncommon but significant due to their critical role in hand functionality and hand grip strength. These fractures exhibit diverse patterns, including extra-articular, Bennett, Rolando, and highly comminuted fractures, each with unique implications for management and outcomes. Each type presents unique challenges in achieving anatomical reduction, stability, and favorable long-term outcomes. This review explores the anatomy of the trapeziometacarpal joint, classification systems, clinical presentation, imaging techniques, and management strategies for

Background Fracture-dislocations of all four ulnar (second to fifth) carpometacarpal (CMC) joints are rare hand injuries and frequently overlooked or missed. These injuries can be treated conservatively when closed reduction is successfully achieved, though they are sometimes irreducible and unstable. Case Description We report the case of a 17-year-old boy involved in a vehicular accident. Clinical images showed dorsal dislocation of all four ulnar CMC joints of the left hand associated with a fracture of the base of the fourth metacarpal. Although closed reduction was attempted immediately

BACKGROUND: Failure of closed manipulative reduction of an acute anterior shoulder dislocation is seldom reported in the literature and is usually due to structural blocks such as soft tissue entrapment (biceps, subscapularis, labrum), bony fragments (glenoid, greater tuberosity) and severe head impaction (Hill-Sachs lesion).
CASE REPORT: We present a case of an irreducible anterior shoulder dislocation in a 57-year-old male patient after a road-traffic accident. He had severe impaction of the head underneath glenoid rim and associated fracture of the greater tuberosity. Closed reduction perf

INTRODUCTION: Previous reports on primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with Down's syndrome (DS) are often small and/or lack a comparison cohort, and thus it is challenging to draw meaningful conclusions about this group. The purpose of this study was to report on the post-operative complications in patients with DS undergoing primary THA, compared to a non-DS cohort.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we evaluated patients from 2010 to 2018 using a national database. We assessed surgical complications: closed reduction for dislocation, revision, resection, periprosthetic fract

BACKGROUND: Displaced distal clavicular fractures are generally operated on because of the high nonunion rate after nonoperative treatment. Several surgical techniques have been developed to reduce the nonunion rate and improve functional outcomes. One of them is closed reduction and minimally invasive coracoclavicular double-button fixation, which requires the integrity of the coracoid process to be performed.
CASE SUMMARY: We present a 35-year-old male patient who had been successfully subjected to a modified Latarjet procedure for glenohumeral instability with bony defect treatment, and 7

We studied seven children with the unusual complication of pseudo-Volkmann's contracture due to tethering of the flexor digitorum profundus to fractures of the ulna. It was detected 2 days to 16 years after closed reductions of fractures of the shafts of the radius and ulna. The children did not have nerve palsies or undue pain after the reductions. Normal length, excursion, and function of the flexor digitorum profundus was restored by untethering the muscle and its tendons from the ulnar fracture by early manipulation or by late localized myotenolysis. We recommend that the passive range of

Ninety six distal tibial epiphyseal fractures were identified and treated in our institution from 1976 to 1988. The average age was twelve years and eight months (range two to seventeen years), but seventy-one were between eleven and fourteen years old. Using the Salter-Harris classification we have found twelve type 1 tibial fractures, fourty-two type 2, thirty type 3 and twelve type 4. Four were triplane fractures and seven were Tillaux fractures. Twenty-six had injuries in the medial corner of the ankle mortise (Mac-Farland). Fifty patients were treated non-operatively with closed reduction

Surgical intervention utilising open and (less commonly) closed reduction, are the main methods for the management of fractures of the mandible that do not involve the condyle or coronoid. Non-surgical management of these fracture patterns is rare. This systematic review aimed to collate current evidence surrounding this topic. A systematic review was undertaken using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Inclusion criteria were adults with mandibular fractures. Exclusion criteria included any form of surgical intervention including open or closed r
