Usability and Acceptance of a Social Robot in People With Multiple Sclerosis: Comparative Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Socially Assistive Robotics is an emerging interdisciplinary field that integrates robotics, medicine, cognitive and social sciences, and neuroscience to support people across diverse contexts. Despite recent advances, its potential for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) remains largely unexplored, even though MS affects sensory-motor, cognitive, and psychological domains where SAR interventions could offer substantial benefits. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the usability of a humanoid robot in people with MS (PwMS), compare their experiences with age-matched healthy su

Associations between oral health behaviours, oral health, salivary biomarkers and clinical phenotype in individuals with alcohol use disorder: protocol for a longitudinal observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Binge drinking in the previous month was reported in 23.5% of US adults, and 28.1 million adults met criteria for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) in 2023. Individuals with AUD face increased risks of oral health problems, including caries, periodontal disease and mucosal lesions. Poor oral hygiene, nutrition and dental care all contribute to these conditions, but individuals with AUD are often under-represented in oral health surveys. Understanding relationships between oral health behaviours, attitudes and general health is crucial for designing future interventions. This pilot aims

The Neuroscience of Religious and Spiritual Practices: A Systematic Review of Neurotheological Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Religious and spiritual practices are among the most ancient and universal human behaviors, yet their neurobiological substrates remain incompletely characterized. Neurotheology-the scientific study of the relationship between spiritual experience and brain function-has produced growing evidence that such practices generate measurable, systematic, and neuroplastic changes in brain structure and function. However, prior reviews have been limited to single practice types, narrow evidence bases, or narrative methods, with none synthesizing the full spectrum of traditions, practices, a

NeuroBridge ontology: computable provenance metadata to give the long tail of neuroimaging data a FAIR chance for secondary use.

BACKGROUND: Despite the efforts of the neuroscience community, there are many published neuroimaging studies with data that are still not findable or accessible. Users face significant challenges in reusing neuroimaging data due to the lack of provenance metadata, such as experimental protocols, study instruments, and details about the study participants, which is also required for interoperability. To implement the FAIR guidelines for neuroimaging data, we have developed an iterative ontology engineering process and used it to create the NeuroBridge ontology. The NeuroBridge ontology is a com

Prader-Willi syndrome: Symptoms and topiramate response in light of genetics.

INTRODUCTION: Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic condition, which affects one in 25,000 births and results in various phenotypes. It leads to a wide range of metabolic and endocrine disorders including growth delay, hypogonadism, narcolepsy, lack of satiety and compulsive eating, associated with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. Prognosis is especially determined by the complications of obesity (diabetes, cardiorespiratory diseases) and by severe behavioral disorders marked by impulsivity and compulsion. This heterogeneous clinical picture may lead to mis- or delayed diagnosis

The Protocol for: Do peers enhance alcohol use outcomes in group motivational interviewing? A translational clinical trial investigating brain synchrony in underage emerging adults during a fMRI hyperscanning task and its association with 12 month alcohol use reductions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol is the top substance used by US emerging adults under legal drinking age (underage emerging adults; U-EA; ages 18-19). U-EA are unlikely to seek or receive indicated alcohol interventions. It is imperative to find brief, effective interventions to reduce U-EA drinking. Developmental neuroscience reflects that peers hold higher neural salience during adolescence, as evidenced by differential neural response with real and/or simulated peers, even when those peers were not friends, and particularly in the context of alcohol. Peers also activate positive (prosocial) ne

Activity-based anorexia animal model: a review of the main neurobiological findings.

BACKGROUND: The genesis of anorexia nervosa (AN), a severe eating disorder with a pervasive effect on many brain functions such as attention, emotions, reward processing, cognition and motor control, has not yet been understood. Since our current knowledge of the genetic aspects of AN is limited, we are left with a large and diversified number of biological, psychological and environmental risk factors, called into question as potential triggers of this chronic condition with a high relapse rate. One of the most valid and used animal models for AN is the activity-based anorexia (ABA), which re

Reliability and validity enhancements of intrinsic metrics via quantitative T2* fluctuation from multi-echo fMRI.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is the most commonly used technique for non-invasive exploration of human cognition and neuroscience. Conventional T2*-weighted single-echo resting-state fMRI (SE-rfMRI) is limited by signal loss in regions prone to susceptibility artifacts and inseparable confounding from non-neuronal baseline (i.e., initial signal intensity S0) fluctuations. While multi-echo optimally combined rfMRI (ME-OC) effectively mitigates signal loss, confounding from S0 fluctuations remains unaddressed. Here, we leverage quantitative T2* fluctuation from ME-rfMRI to derive

Effects of pain neuroscience education combined with blood flow restriction training on chronic postoperative pain following total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) remains a major clinical challenge following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with psychological maladaptation and persistent neuromuscular dysfunction considered key contributors to ongoing pain and disability. Pain neuroscience education (PNE) may improve maladaptive pain cognitions, whereas blood flow restriction training (BFRT) can enhance muscle function and induce exercise-related hypoalgesia. Although both interventions have shown potential benefits in chronic pain rehabilitation, no randomized controlled trial has investigated the combined e

Beating pain with psychedelics: Matter over mind?

Basic pain research has shed light on key cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying nociceptive and phenomenological aspects of pain. Despite these advances, we still yearn for the discovery of novel therapeutic strategies to address the unmet needs of about 70 % of chronic neuropathic pain patients whose pain fails to respond to opioids as well as to other conventional analgesic agents. Importantly, a substantial body of clinical observations over the past decade cumulatively suggests that the psychedelic class of drugs may possess heuristic value for understanding and treating chronic pai

Neurological and neuropsychiatric complications of COVID-19 in 153 patients: a UK-wide surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: Concerns regarding potential neurological complications of COVID-19 are being increasingly reported, primarily in small series. Larger studies have been limited by both geography and specialty. Comprehensive characterisation of clinical syndromes is crucial to allow rational selection and evaluation of potential therapies. The aim of this study was to investigate the breadth of complications of COVID-19 across the UK that affected the brain. METHODS: During the exponential phase of the pandemic, we developed an online network of secure rapid-response case report notification porta

High-level language processing regions are not engaged in action observation or imitation.

A set of left frontal, temporal, and parietal brain regions respond robustly during language comprehension and production (e.g., Fedorenko E, Hsieh PJ, Nieto-Castañón A, Whitfield-Gabrieli S, Kanwisher N. These regions have been further shown to be selective for language relative to other cognitive processes, including arithmetic, aspects of executive function, and music perception (e.g., Fedorenko E, Behr MK, Kanwisher N. Associations between blood pressure across adulthood and late-life brain structure and pathology in the neuroscience substudy of the 1946 British birth cohort (Insight 46): an epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Midlife hypertension confers increased risk for cognitive impairment in late life. The sensitive period for risk exposure and extent that risk is mediated through amyloid or vascular-related mechanisms are poorly understood. We aimed to identify if, and when, blood pressure or change in blood pressure during adulthood were associated with late-life brain structure, pathology, and cognition. METHODS: Participants were from Insight 46, a neuroscience substudy of the ongoing longitudinal Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development, a birth cohort that initially

[DGRW-update: neurology--from empirical strategies towards evidence based interventions].

Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and neuropathies are the most important diseases in neurological rehabilitation financed by the German Pension Insurance. The primary goal is vocational (re)integration. Driven by multiple findings of neuroscience research the traditional holistic approach with mainly empirically derived strategies was developed further and improved by new evidence-based interventions. This process had been, and continues to be, necessary to meet the health-economic pressures for ever shorter and more efficient rehab measures. Evidence-based inter

Breaking the vicious cycle: a bibliometric and visual analysis of the bidirectional relationship between pruritus and negative emotions.

BACKGROUND: Pruritus is a common skin symptom, frequently associated with substantial psychological burden. Recent advances in neuroscience and clinical practice suggest a clinically significant reciprocal association between chronic pruritus and negative emotions (e.g., anxiety and depression), moving beyond simple models of causality. Despite increasing research interest, this interdisciplinary field still lacks a comprehensive bibliometric overview. Therefore, this study aims to systematically visualize the research landscape and identify emerging hotspots, underexplored areas, and translat
