Segmentation of dense and multi-species bacterial colonies using models trained on synthetic microscopy images.

The spread of microbial infections is governed by the self-organization of bacteria on surfaces. Bacterial interactions in clinically relevant settings remain challenging to quantify, especially in systems with multiple species or varied material properties. Quantitative image analysis methods based on machine learning show promise to overcome this challenge and support the development of novel antimicrobial treatments, but are limited by a lack of high-quality training data. Here, novel experimental and image analysis techniques for high-fidelity single-cell segmentation of bacterial colonies

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-induced isolated hyperbilirubinemia in acute myelogenous leukemia: A case report.

RATIONALE: Granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSFs) are used in treating chemotherapy-induced neutropenia or in healthy stem cell donors before collection since they mobilize hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow into the peripheral blood. Reported side effects of these drugs include bone pain, fatigue, and, rarely, splenic rupture. However, G-CSFs were not previously associated with isolated hyperbilirubinemia. PATIENT CONCERNS: We describe the case of a previously healthy 42-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with fever and chills. Initial laboratory in

First-in-Human Study of [11C]NCGG401 for Imaging Colony-Stimulating Factor 1 Receptors in the Brain.

Microglia, the immune cells in the brain, play a significant role in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. To visualize these cells in the living brain, we developed a PET ligand, [11C]NCGG401 (4-{2-[((1R,2R)-2-hydroxycyclohexyl)(methyl)amino]benzothiazol-6-yloxy}-N-methylpicolinamide, NCGG401), that targets colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R). In this study, we present the first-in-human evaluation of [11C]NCGG401 to assess its safety profile and then to evaluate its kinetics to quantify CSF1R in the human brain. Methods: Head to upper thigh PET scans were conducted in 3

Energy optimization and plant comfort management in smart greenhouses using the artificial bee colony algorithm.

Agriculture is an essential component of human sustenance in this world. These days, with a growing population, we must significantly increase agricultural productivity to meet demand. Agriculture moved toward technologies as a result of the demand for higher yields with less resources. Increasing awareness of the significance and influence of agricultural practices in global climate change has made the use of energy-efficient innovations a vital aspect of the agriculture sector. The use of greenhouses to provide controlled environments that encourage effective plant growth is one of the curre

Clinical Insights Into Aortitis Following Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor Use in an Older Male Patient.

This report describes a rare case of extensive aortitis associated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) administration in a 74-year-old male with castration-resistant prostate cancer and multiple metastases. The patient developed recurrent fever and elevated inflammatory markers after receiving filgrastim for docetaxel-induced neutropenia. Despite antibiotic treatment, his fever persisted. A contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed circumferential wall thickening of the common carotid artery to the aortic arch and abdominal aorta, prompting suspicion of G-CSF-associated vasculitis. Fol

Use of Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor for Beta-Lactam Induced Neutropenia in Children With Bacterial Meningitis.

Drug induced neutropenia is an uncommon but potentially serious side effect in children receiving prolonged β-lactam antibiotic therapy. Management of β-lactam induced neutropenia in children remains challenging and often requires antibiotic therapy interruption or modification. There are limited data in pediatric patients about use of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) for the treatment of drug induced neutropenia. We report the use of G-CSF for β-lactam induced neutropenia in four pediatric patients between the ages of 3 months and 18 years with bacterial meningitis in this case s

Efficacy of plant-based remedies for Varroa destructor control in honey bee colonies: A preliminary study.

The Western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) plays a crucial role in global ecosystems and agriculture, yet the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor remains a primary cause of severe varroosis and significant colony morbidity and mortality. Current reliance on synthetic acaricides often leads to the development of mite resistance and raises concerns regarding chemical residues in hive products. This has created an urgent need for innovative and effective veterinary strategies for parasite control. This study investigated the efficacy of traditional plant-based remedies as an alternative treatment

Helminths of the black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) from breeding colonies in north-central Poland.

Among parasites of the digestive tract of the black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) in Poland, the best known are species of digenetic trematodes and cestodes. Nematodes of this bird species are not well known. Black-headed gulls, due to their varied diet, migration, life in a flock, and changes of habitat, can become infected with various species of helminths, and like synanthropic birds, they can spread the dispersal stages of parasites across urban and recreational areas. In the present study, an attempt was made to identify the helminth fauna of C. ridibundus from breeding colonie

Buserelin Promotes the Differentiation and Function of Macrophage-Colony-Stimulating Factor-Producing T Helper Cells.

BACKGROUND: Buserelin has been used to treat central precocious puberty (CPP). However, it could potentially result in immune dysregulation to undermine patients' health. Therefore, it is necessary to elucidate the effects of buserelin on immune cells. Here we explored buserelin-induced impacts on the differentiation and function of macrophage-colony-stimulating factor-producing T helper (ThGM) cells to uncover the immunoregulatory role of buserelin. METHODS: Rat CPP was induced by danazol injection followed by buserelin treatment. The frequencies of ThGM cells in the spleen and lymph nodes w

Development, characterization, and evaluation of a simple polymicrobial colony biofilm model for testing of antimicrobial wound dressings.

UNLABELLED: Chronic wound infections are generally of polymicrobial nature with aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, as well as fungi frequently observed in them. Wound treatment involves a series of steps, including debridement of the wound, flushing, and often the use of multiple wound dressings many of which are antimicrobial. Yet, many wound dressings are tested versus single species of planktonic microbes, which fails to mirror the real-life presence of biofilms. AIMS: Simple biofilm models are the first step to testing of any antimicrobial and wound dressing; therefore, the aim of this study

Effect of intranasal administration of Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor on pulmonary Cryptococcus gattii infection.

Cryptococcosis, caused by infections with C. neoformans and C. gattii, presents a serious threat to global health and necessitates effective treatment strategies. Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor, GM-CSF, is an immune-modulating cytokine that has been utilized clinically to improve host defense against infection; however, the impact of GM-CSF treatment in C. gattii infection has not been elucidated. Our current study aimed to investigate the effect of GM-CSF treatment on pulmonary immune response during C. gattii infection. In response to C. gattii infection, GM-CSF-expressing

Commercialising everyday distress: neurasthenia and traditional Chinese medicine in colonial Hong Kong, 1950s to 1980s.

The persistent use of neurasthenia in Asia, an out-dated diagnostic category in modern psychiatry, has confounded many psychiatrists from the 1960s. This paper attempts to understand the prevalence of neurasthenia among the lay public in post-World War II Hong Kong. It examines the social history of psychiatry and focuses on the roles of traditional Chinese medicine in shaping public perceptions and responses towards neurasthenia. This research reveals that, when psychiatrists discarded the term as an ineffective label in the 1950s, practitioners and pharmaceutical companies of Chinese medicin

Fetal endothelial colony-forming cells: Possible targets for prevention of the fetal origins of adult diseases.

Endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs), a subset of circulating and resident endothelial progenitor cells, are capable of self-renewal and de novo vessel formation, and are known key regulators of vascular integrity and homeostasis. Numerous studies have found that exposure to hostile environment during the fetal development exerts a profound influence on the level and function of ECFCs, which may be the underlying factor linking endothelial dysfunction to cardiovascular disease of the offspring in later life. Herein, we focus on the latest findings regarding the effects of pregnancy-related

Nanoscale level gelatin-based scaffolds enhance colony formation of porcine testicular germ cells.

The extracellular matrix is important in cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation. Gelatin, a support for adhering cells, is used for coating culture plate surfaces of several primary and stem cells. However, gelatin characteristics on culture plates and its cell interactions are not understood. Here, we aimed to identify the effect of gelatin topography on culture plates on the proliferation and colony formation of porcine spermatogonial germ cells (pSGC). To generate different surface topographies, gelatin powder was dissolved in H2O at varying melting temperatures (40, 60, 80, and 12

Ant Colony Optimization-Enabled CNN Deep Learning Technique for Accurate Detection of Cervical Cancer.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth and proliferation, which are both diagnostic indicators of the disease. When cancerous cells enter one organ, there is a risk that they may spread to adjacent tissues and eventually to other organs. Cancer of the cervix of the uterus often initially manifests itself in the uterine cervix, which is located at the very bottom of the uterus. Both the growth and death of cervical cells are characteristic features of this condition. False-negative results provide a significant moral dilemma since they may cause women to get an incorrect diagnosis of c
