Vaccination coverage of 2-year-old children--United States, January-March, 1994.

The Childhood Immunization Initiative (CII) was initiated to increase vaccination coverage among 2-year-old children. The 1996 objective is to have at least 90% coverage for four of the five critical vaccines routinely recommended for children (i.e., one dose of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine [MMR] and at least three doses each of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertussis vaccine [DTP], oral poliovirus vaccine, and Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine [Hib]), and at least 70% coverage for three doses of hepatitis B vaccine (Hep B) (1). [Vaccination--duty and voluntary consent].

High mass inoculation rates--e.g. against measles, mumps and rubella or German measles--are mandatory in highly industrialised countries to keep circulation of wild strains of viruses as low as possible. [Wild domestic pigeons--a public health problem of increasing significance in East Germany].

In many cities of the GDR the number of wild house pigeons is increasing. Because of their distribution, noxious effects and hygienic importance they are considered by law as health pests. Therefore, their populations have to be regulated in such a way to minimize the noxious effects caused by them. The State Hygiene inspectorate is responsible for organization and surveillance of health pest control. At present in the GDR two procedures are allowed applying chemical substance for pest control by specialists. A catching procedure, applicable everywhere, is well proving a success. By restaurati

[Preventive health care in travel, especially vaccinations].

Nearly 40 million journeys abroad were recorded from the Federal Republic of Germany last year. 60-70% of travellers going to southern countries seek medical advice for preventive measures, particularly in Public Health centres. Inquiries for vaccinations are prevalent. Current aspects of immunization against yellow fever, cholera, tetanus, polio, typhoid fever, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rabies meningococcal meningitis, European tick-borne encephalitis, measles and tuberculosis are discussed. Finally, some remarks on malaria prevention, hygiene, health insurance and information services are gi
