7 brains out of a series of 124 necropsies of treated leukemic patients show a communicating hydrocephalus, without invasion of the central nervous system by the malignant blood cells. In 4 cases it is proven that the hydrocephalus is due to obstruction of the liquor drainage at the level of the arachnoidal villi and dural sinuses, by the leukemic invasion of these structures. It is shown that, even in case of preventive brain irradiation and intrathecal-administered cytotoxic drugs, these structures remain areas, in which the leukemic cells are difficult to destroy.

Eleven cases of presumed aqueductal stenosis with onset of symptoms after the first decade were reviewed. Ten patients had complete occlusion and one a high-grade stenosis. In 10, the dilated lateral ventricles caused a marked inferior displacement of the third ventricle. The purpose of the present study was to develop and evaluate a training program for paraprofessional helpers. Twenty dormitory counselor candidates were given 20 hours of communication training while 15 other candidates were given no training. The results indicated that the trained subjects demonstrated significantly higher levels of empathy than the untrained subjects and that they maintained their level of empathy after 6 months. Results are discussed in terms of the lasting effects of the training program and the advantages of being able to use trainers with only limited experience.

There were 44 new cases of renal tuberculosis at the Waikato Hospital, 1961-1975. Thirty-three patients were Maoris or Polynesians and 10 Europeans. Most patients were adults. Culture of the urine and intravenous urography were the most useful diagnostic tests. The patients were treated with antituberculous chemotherapy. Seventeen had surgical procedures including 10 nephrectomies. In all there was one death. Factors concerned with prevention in high risk groups are discussed.

The Bentley-100-Autotransfusion System was used in eight cases in the emergency department of St. Francis Hospital of Lynwood. The majority of the patients sustained massive chest trauma and the amount of blood salvaged ranged from 1,600 to 14,000 cc. Although the clotting factors and platelet counts altered greatly during the first postoperative days, they returned to normal within 72 hours. The advantages, disadvantages, and controversial areas in autotransfusion are discussed.

Two mutants of the hymenomycete Schizophyllum commune, unable to use acetate as the sole carbon source for growth, were isolated. Chronic communicating hydrocephalus was produced in adult dogs by injection of silastic into the subarachnoid space. Electron microscopy was used to verify the sequence of pathologic changes in the ventricular wall. In the management of patients it is often important to combine physical and psychotherapeutic treatment methods according to the individual patient's needs. In analytically oriented psychotherapy more attention can usefully be paid to the patient's bodily attitudes and behavior than has been customary. A psychosomatic approach which can be applied to the psychotherapeutic process is described, and theoretical considerations are discussed.
