Prevalence of disabling conditions in a rural northern Thai community: a survey conducted by village health communicators.

This report presents a survey of disabling conditions conducted by village health communicators (VHCs) in 1989 in a rural northern Thai community. The disabled were first identified by a VHC and then examined clinically and socially by a health care team both to confirm the clinical diagnosis and to formulate an appropriate treatment plan. The overall prevalence rate of disabled persons was 6.3/1,000 population. The prevalence rate was higher for males than females and increased with age. Locomotor disability (48.8%) was the most commonly identified disabling condition, with visual disability

Lessons for rabies control and elimination programmes: a decade of One Health experience from Bali, Indonesia.

Since the emergence of rabies on Bali, Indonesia, in 2008, the Indonesian Government and other stakeholders have implemented disease control and prevention activities with the aim of re-securing Bali's freedom from dog-mediated rabies. The authors report on the lessons learned during these efforts, and their applicability to other regions where canine rabies is endemic, as well as to rabies-free populations that are at risk from incursions. To eliminate rabies from Bali will require time and commitment, as well as a combination of approaches employing the principle of One Health. Efforts shoul

Strengthening causes of death identification through community-based verbal autopsy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Indonesia has not optimally provided complete and reliable civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS). Death certification is one of the elements of the CRVS system. Reliable data on death rates and causes serve as the basis for building a strong evidence base for public health policy, planning, monitoring, and evaluation. This study aims to implement an approach to identifying the cause of death through verbal autopsy by empowering community health workers during the pandemic. METHOD: This study is implementation research with the empowerment of the community, in this case,

The fight against lymphatic filariasis: perceptions of community drug distributors during mass drug administration in coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF), a neglected tropical disease (NTD) and leading cause of global disability, is endemic in 32 countries in Africa with almost 350 million people requiring regular drug administration, and only 16 countries achieving target coverage. Community Drug Distributors (CDDs) are critical for the success of NTD programs, and the distribution of medicines during mass drug administration (MDA) in Africa; however they could also be a weak link. The primary aim of this study is to explore and describe perceptions of CDDs during MDA for LF in Mvita sub-county in Mombasa

Contraceptive technology and family planning services.

A large variety of modern contraceptives is now available, including several means to administer hormonal contraception, highly effective long-term methods and simple sterilization techniques. Methods under research include immuno-contraceptives for women and men, hormonal methods for men, new approaches to female hormonal contraception and improved barrier methods. Modern contraceptives are effective and safe for most women, and some methods have beneficial health effects other than prevention of pregnancy. However, underlying health conditions may decrease the safety of a given method. The a

The need for health equitable climate adaptation policies in Northern Europe.

Socioeconomic conditions remain an important factor in determining health outcomes in Northern Europe. In this commentary, we argue for evidence-based temperature-related climate adaptation policies in Northern Europe that account for disparities in socioeconomic conditions and aim at universal health coverage. We highlight the role of spatial and occupational disparities in urban areas that can be important factors in increased physical and mental health impacts related to heat and cold. We further highlight how these factors interplay with exposure to air pollution and access to green areas

Lost in Translation and Left Behind: Lived Experiences of Chinese Immigrants During the 2025 Los Angeles Wildfires.

The January 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles County (LAC) caused widespread destruction and disproportionately affected linguistically diverse communities. Chinese immigrants, one of the largest immigrant groups in LAC, may have experienced heightened vulnerability due to limited English proficiency. To examine Chinese immigrants' experiences with emergency alerts and recovery during the 2025 wildfire, we conducted two focus groups in January 2026 with 16 Chinese participants who had been directly impacted by the wildfire. Discussions explored their trusted communication channels, fire alerts, ev

Supporting local ownership of transition processes: a key pathway to sustaining the HIV response.

Globally, an increasing number of countries have made progress towards HIV epidemic control, yet decreasing donor funding and insufficient domestic investments threaten these strides. Within this context, the global community is interested in how to successfully transition responsibility for HIV services from donor-funded programmes to local ownership within the broader healthcare system. This analysis explores how to centre local leadership in transition processes to ensure long-term sustainability of HIV programmes, including moving from external to domestic financing. Existing frameworks sho

HealthyPlan.City: A Web Tool to Support Urban Environmental Equity and Public Health in Canadian Communities.

Urban environmental factors such as air quality, heat islands, and access to greenspaces and community amenities impact public health. Some vulnerable populations such as low-income groups, children, older adults, new immigrants, and visible minorities live in areas with fewer beneficial conditions, and therefore, face greater health risks. Planning and advocating for equitable healthy urban environments requires systematic analysis of reliable spatial data to identify where vulnerable populations intersect with positive or negative urban/environmental characteristics. To facilitate this effor

Ending the HIV epidemic for all, not just some: structural racism as a fundamental but overlooked social-structural determinant of the US HIV epidemic.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review the recent theoretical and empirical literature on structural racism, social determinants of health frameworks within the context of HIV prevention and treatment, and criticism of the national responses to the US epidemic. RECENT FINDINGS: In line with growing mainstream attention to the role of structural racism and health inequities, recent editorials and studies cite ending structural racism as an essential step to ending the US HIV epidemic. Recent studies demonstrate that barriers rooted in structural racism such as incarceration, housing instability, police

Community health workers during the Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: The role of community health workers (CHWs) in the West Africa Ebola outbreak has been highlighted to advocate for increasing numbers of CHWs globally to build resilience, strengthen health systems, and provide emergency response capacity. However, the roles CHWs played, the challenges they faced, and their effectiveness during the outbreak are not well documented. This study assessed the impact of Ebola on community-based maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services, documented the contribution of CHWs and other community-based actors to the Ebola response, and identified l

Perspective: Dimensions of Environment and Health in Arctic Communities.

In the Arctic, environment and health are linked in myriad ways. A key emphasis has been on numerous long-lived contaminants in traditional foods, particularly marine mammals, and their well-documented impacts on human, animal and environmental health ("One health approach"). More recent concerns for Indigenous communities focus on the (side) effects of the switch to a modern, processed diet, which is accompanied by a loss of tradition and emerging health impacts. Furthermore, the availability of traditional foods is increasingly threatened by the impacts of climate change, which also causes t

The feasibility and acceptability of implementing simplified cognitive behavioral therapy approaches to support postpartum mental health and address associated social and behavioral barriers to postpartum family planning in Amhara, Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Poor mental health can negatively impact health outcomes across diverse health areas, including in the first year postpartum. Yet, the intersection of postpartum mental health and postpartum family planning (FP) is understudied. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based practice that has proven helpful for improving mental health and supporting positive behavior change across health areas, including in low-resource settings. Drawing on existing CBT tools, we created and piloted an intervention called Mothers Time, designed to be delivered in three sessions by a commun

Evaluation of Medicaid Expansion Under the Affordable Care Act and Contraceptive Care in US Community Health Centers.

IMPORTANCE: Use of effective contraception decreases unintended pregnancy. It is not known whether Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act increased use of contraception for women who are underserved in the US health care safety net. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act with changes in use of contraception among patients at risk of pregnancy at US community health centers, with the hypothesis that Medicaid expansion would be associated with increases in use of the most effective contraceptive methods (long-acting reversible contra
