High titres of immunoconglutinin activity (antibody to bound complement components) have been found in the parotid, sublingual and submandibular saliva of most healthy subjects. The immunoconglutinin (IK) titre in mixed saliva was substantially lower than in the other samples of saliva. C3 was detectable in only three of 164 samples of parotid, submandibular and sublingual saliva but was present in forty-seven of 117 mixed saliva samples. Serologically negative horses, as determined with the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFA), were infected with Babesia equi and 60 days later with Babesia caballi. Long-acting oxytetracycline was administered intramuscularly (20 mg/kg) at 3-day intervals to each of 16 naturally infected Anaplasma marginale carrier beef cows; 8 of the 16 cows were given 3 injections and the other 8 cows were given 4 injections. Bos indicus-crossbred calves exposed to natural Babesia bovis infection in wet and dry tropical environments in northern Queensland were tested for antibodies using the indirect haemagglutination (IHA) test. There was evidence of maternal antibodies suggesting endemicity of B. bovis in the 2 environments. Within one year 35.3 to 94.6% of the calves had acquired B. bovis infection. We reviewed 30 episodes of pulmonary blastomycosis among 29 patients to compare the methods of diagnosis and to assess the usefulness of cytological sputum examination. Complement fixation and skin tests were not helpful in diagnosis. Confirmation by culture of sputum or tissue required, on average, five weeks. The results of the serological examination of persons immunized with chemical typhus vaccine (CTV) are presented. The examination was carried out by means of the complement fixation test (CFT), the passive hemagglutination test (PHAT), the toxin neutralization test (TNT) and the immunofluorescence test (IFT). The acetone-fixed live culture of Rickettsia prowazekii, strain Breinl, served as antigen in IFT. BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is listed as a priority disease in low-income countries like Guinea, facing challenges in logistics, equipment, competence, and cost limitations for diagnosis. Serological diagnosis is mainly performed by the Rose Bengal agglutination test (RBT) in the veterinary sector. Viruses have been demonstrated or suspected as the causative agents of various types of uveitis. Some arboviruses can be responsible for ocular manifestations. In Brittany, both serosurveys and virus isolations were positive for arboviruses. These results led us to look for the possible role of arboviruses in the aetiology of uveitis. The ELA-IgM antibody test as used in viral diseases can also be applied to infections with Legionella pneumophila and is yielding similar results as the IgM determination by immunofluorescence. Complement-fixation and microagglutination are yielding also positive results in IgM-positive sera. IgM antibodies appear relative late after beginning of the disease and are persisting for several months. There is evidence that IgM antibodies as detected by the use of a Legionella pneumophila antigen are also cross-reacting to a number of other antigens.

Purified house dust allergen has been employed for screening the susceptibility to inactivation of haemolytic complement in the blood serum of atopic individuals and control subjects. Both rubella virus and Echovirus 9 (ECHO 9) were epidemic in Scotland during the summer of 1973; both viruses can cause a mild febrile illness with rash. Sera from 286 rubella-negative pregnant women were tested for neutralizing antibodies to ECHO 9 virus; 40 women had antibody titres suggestive of recent infection. Prospective studies on the outcome of these pregnancies are in progress but preliminary results suggest no connexion between fetal damage and ECHO 9 infection.
