Body dysmorphic disorder falls under the category of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, yet research has suggested it may also be highly associated with social anxiety disorder. The current study examined body image variables among 68 outpatients with primary obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; n=22), social anxiety disorder (SAD; n=25), and panic disorder (PD; n=21). Participants filled out self-report measures of body image disturbance, attitudes toward one's appearance, and anxiety. Body image disturbance and attitudes toward appearance did not significantly differ between the grou

The current literature regarding kleptomania (KM) is scarce, especially regarding treatment approaches and outcomes. The aims of the present study involved: (1) exploring characteristics of people with KM (with and without co-occurring eating disorders (EDs)); (2) considering KM along an impulsive-compulsive spectrum; and, (3) investigating treatment outcomes in a clinical sample of female patients with KM. The study sample included 150 female participants with either a diagnosis of KM only (n = 13), co-occurring KM and EDs (n = 71), or healthy control individuals (HCs) (n = 66). The KM-only g

BACKGROUND: Thought-action fusion (TAF) represents an individual's belief that a thought is like action. Inflated TAF has been considered a central mechanism for developing obsessive thoughts. However, the neural mechanisms underlying TAF are yet unknown.
METHODS: We recruited 32 healthy men to participate in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. Whereas inside the 3T MRI scanner, participants were asked to read negative statements describing the expectation of bad events associated with close persons (CPs condition) or neutral persons (NPs condition). They also completed the

The present study examined the proposition that inflated responsibility is implicated in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Compared to non-anxious control participants (NACs), and an anxious control group with generalized social phobia (GSPs), we predicted that individuals with OCD (OCs) would exhibit a greater urge to rectify situations involving potential risk, would report more distress upon leaving such situations unrectified, and would feel more personal responsibility if the unrectified situations resulted in harm. Fifteen OCs, 15 NACs, and 15 GSPs completed the Obsessive Compulsive R

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical treatment involving the implantation of a medical device, which sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. DBS in select brain regions has provided remarkable therapeutic benefits for treatment-resistant movement and affective disorders such as Parkinson's disease. DBS directly alters brain activity in a controlled manner, and its effects are reversible. Lately, DBS treatment has been used for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders, such as obsessive compulsive disorder, Tourette syndrome, and severe depression. However, DBS the

Family studies have played a central role in the controversy over the nosologic status of paranoid psychosis or delusional disorder (DD). In this study, 12 cases of DD were blindly rediagnosed from a cohort of 146 schizophrenics. The prevalence of schizophrenia in the relatives of the DD probands was significantly less than that found in the relatives of the schizophrenics. Affective illness was equally uncommon in both groups of relatives. Inferiority feelings clustered significantly in the relatives of the DD probands. From a familial perspective, DD is not closely related to schizophrenia o

The theoretical point of departure here was the assumption that a psychogenic vertigo patient displaces affect, or experience of anxiety to one of dizziness, the dizziness serving as an anxiety equivalent. This is seen to imply a change in the locus of experience from the me to the not-me sphere. "Percept-genetic" techniques and a spiral after-effect measurement were used to compare 23 patients with presumed psychogenic vertigo with a control group matched in sex, age, education and occupation. Results of the percept-genetic techniques showed the patients to display stronger signs of affect an

OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical and psychopathological features of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with religious content in young men and develop a clinical typology of these conditions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical, psychopathological, psychometric, and statistical methods were used to study 33 young men (16-25 years) diagnosed with OCD (F42) with religious content of obsessions.
RESULTS: Three typological forms have been identified, depending on the clinical and psychopathological characteristics dominant in each type of OCD: obsessive thoughts about spiritual imperfection, fear of

Maladaptive daydreaming (MD) is defined as a psychological condition characterized by immersive, narrative-based fantasies that dominate waking consciousness and interfere with daily functioning. While daydreaming is an adaptive cognitive activity, above all in adolescents, MD represents an extreme and compulsive variant associated with significant emotional distress, social withdrawal, academic and occupational impairment. This narrative review offers a comprehensive synthesis of the current literature on MD, with particular emphasis on its clinical manifestations, neurobiological underpinnin

BACKGROUND: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS), characterised by motor and vocal tics, has a prevalence of approximately 1% in school-aged children. Commonly encountered comorbidities of GTS include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive behaviour/disorder (OCB/OCD). Genetic factors play an important part in the aetiology of GTS, and family members may exhibit tics or related disorders such as ADHD, OCB or OCD.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to present a summary of the current evidence to assist the assessment and management of GTS in primary care.

A high prevalence of obsessions and compulsions is recognized in patients with Gilles-de-la-Tourette syndrome. Comparison of a group of patients with Gilles-de-la-Tourette syndrome with a group with obsessive-compulsive disorder, using the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-III-R, showed significantly higher scores in both groups of patients in the Hamburg obsessive-compulsive inventory (short version) than in a control group. When selected items from this Inventory were entered in a discriminant analysis, it was shown that there were specific differences in the obsessive-compulsive symptoms in th

Based on a review of the charts of child and adolescent psychiatric patients, a group of patients with obsessive-compulsive symptoms and a control group were identified. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms described in the charts were classified according to form using the checklist of Khanna et al. By use of latent trait models, a 6-item obsessive-compulsive rating scale was established revealing a dimensional rather than a categorical distribution of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The correlation with other clinical features was investigated.

This article has reviewed clinical and demographic features of the primary anxiety disorders and other psychiatric and medical disorders that often are associated with anxiety symptoms, highlighting differential diagnosis. In summary, phobic disorders (exogenous anxiety) are characterized by anxiety reliably elicited by specific environmental stimuli; the stimuli involved determine which type of phobia is diagnosed. In contrast, panic attacks and generalized anxiety (endogenous anxiety) involve symptoms of anxiety not associated only with specific eliciting stimuli. Panic disorder is different

BACKGROUND: Although obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is highly prevalent in schizophrenia, its relationship with patients' real-life functioning is still controversial.
METHODS: The present study aims at investigating the prevalence of OCD in a large cohort of non-preselected schizophrenia patients living in the community and verifying the relationship of OCD, as well as of other psychopathological symptoms, with real-life functioning along a continuum of OCD severity and after controlling for demographic variables.
RESULTS: A sample of 327 outpatients with schizophrenia was enrolled in

Background The co-occurrence of schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder has attracted increasing clinical and research attention, yet it is not recognised as a distinct diagnostic entity in current psychiatric classification systems. This overlap is associated with greater symptom severity, increased suicide risk, and poorer treatment outcomes. Despite its clinical relevance, reports from South Asia remain scarce. This case contributes regional data and supports the conceptualisation of a schizo-obsessive subtype, challenging existing nosological boundaries. Case Presentation We report

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Individuals who meet criteria for compulsive buying-shopping disorder (i.e., acquiring problems only) or hoarding disorder (i.e., acquiring and discarding problems) may acquire possessions to compensate for unmet belonging needs, but may do so in different ways. Those with compulsive buying-shopping disorder may acquire objects that they believe will relieve the distress associated with unmet belonging needs (e.g., objects that distract or comfort), whereas those with hoarding disorder may acquire objects that they believe achieve belonging needs (e.g., objects that have i

CONTEXT: Limbic portions of cortical-subcortical circuits are likely involved in the pathogenesis of Tourette syndrome (TS). They are anatomically, developmentally, neurochemically, and functionally related to the basal ganglia, and the basal ganglia are thought to produce the symptoms of tics, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder that commonly affect persons with TS.
OBJECTIVE: To study the morphologic features of the hippocampus and amygdala in children and adults with TS.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional, case-control study using anatomical magnetic resonan
