Future Directions for Examination of Brain Networks in Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with atypical development and maturation of brain networks. A recent focus on human connectomics research and the growing popularity of open science initiatives has created the ideal climate in which to make real progress toward understanding the neurobiology of disorders affecting youth. Here we outline future directions for neuroscience researchers examining brain networks in neurodevelopmental disorders, highlighting gaps in the current literature. We emphasize the importance of leveraging large neuroimaging and phenotypic data sets recently made

3D CT cinematic rendering of mycotic aneurysms.

Mycotic aneurysms are uncommon but emergent conditions in which infection of a vessel leads to a contained rupture. Progression to frank rupture, thrombosis, distal embolization, and death can occur. The widespread availability of computed tomography (CT) and its ability to obtain high-resolution, contrast-enhanced, volumetric images rapidly has made it the modality of choice for evaluating mycotic aneurysms. Three-dimensional CT visualizations can provide important information to surgeons and interventionalists prior to attempting repair of these lesions. In this case series, we demonstrate t

Does the presence of an unerupted lower third molar influence the risk of mandibular angle and condylar fractures?

It has been suggested that unerupted lower third molars (M3) increase the fragility of the mandibular angle and simultaneously decrease the risk of condylar fracture. However, it is unknown whether this applies regardless of the direction and point of impact of the traumatic force. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of an unerupted M3 on the fragility of the angle and condyle in terms of a force acting from different directions and affecting different regions of the mandible. Computed tomography scans of a human mandible and finite element methodology were used to obtain two t

[Diseases of the airways].

Diseases of the airways are common symptomatic patterns with a steadily increasing prevalence. Bronchial pathologies are often encountered in the daily routine and also often as secondary findings, e.g. in cancerous diseases in the form of (chronic) bronchitis, emphysema and bronchiolitis. Characteristic methodological techniques in imaging of the airways are computed tomography (CT) acquisition in expiration for occlusive diseases of the airways and the possibility of quantitative CT image analysis by measuring the thickness of the parenchyma and the bronchial wall. In general a differentiati

No solid empirical evidence for the SOLID (serial order learning impairment) hypothesis of dyslexia.

This article reports on 2 studies that attempted to replicate the findings of a study by Szmalec, Loncke, Page, and Duyck (2011) on Hebb repetition learning in dyslexic individuals, from which these authors concluded that dyslexics suffer from a deficit in long-term learning of serial order information. In 2 experiments, 1 on adolescents (N = 59) and 1 on children (N = 57), no empirical evidence was obtained for impaired Hebb learning in dyslexics, whether the same data-analytical procedure as Szmalec et al. was used or whether some methodological improvements were applied (e.g., using a more

Brain imaging in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a primary brain disorder or a result of peripheral dysfunctions inducing brain alterations, with underlying mechanisms that partially overlap with other painful conditions. Although there are methodologic variations, neuroimaging studies propose neural correlations to clinical findings of abnormal pain modulation in fibromyalgia. Growing evidences of specific differences of brain activations in resting states and pain-evoked conditions confirm clinical hyperalgesia and impaired inhibitory descending systems, and also demonstrate cognitive-affective influences on painful experie

Automatic estimation of pelvic organ anatomical references.

Pelvic floor diseases cover pathologies of which physiopathology is not well understood. 2D sagittal MRI sequences used in the clinical assessment allow to visualize the dynamic behavior of the main organs involved (bladder, uterus-vagina and rectum). Clinicians use anatomical landmarks and measurements related to the pelvic organs in their pathology assessment. Usually, those tasks are performed manually which results in being both tedious and subject to operator dependency. A methodology is proposed to attempt a quantitative and objective characterization of the organ behaviors under abdomin

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) of lesions occupying renal space. Indications, limits, personal experience.

In focal kidney disease, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) using 2nd generation contrast enhancement allows continuous dynamic assessment of the arterial, venous and late perfusion phases of the renal parenchyma, as well as of focal lesions. CEUS is particularly useful in cases of an uncertain diagnosis after the performance of unenhanced ultrasound (US) and echocolorDoppler (ECD) (e.g. dromedary humps, hypertrophic column of Bertin, outcomes of pyelonephritis), and for differential diagnosis of simple cysts with a suspicious appearance (e.g. cysts with a dense content, calcified cysts) and

Compensatory dilatation of the Azygos Venous system Secondary To Superior Vena Cava Occlusion.

Superior vena cava (SVC) occlusion can be clinically recognized in the acute setting when the stenosing process does not allow the development of collateral venous channels, which guarantee the venous drainage to the right heart. On the contrary, when the obstruction develops progressively, the diagnosis of SVC obstruction may remain undiagnosed. In the present case, the presence of SVC thrombosis was purely coincidental. In fact, the obstruction was first noticed on diagnostic tests performed because of the malfunction of a totally implantable Porth a Cath placed into the superior vena cava (

Deeper insight into the mechanism of the reaction of photogenerated metallaketenes and imines.

The reaction mechanism between Fischer carbene complexes and imines to produce beta-lactams has been studied by a combination of computational (DFT) and experimental methodologies. After the photogeneration of metalla-cyclopropanone species, the reaction initiates by 1,3-migration of the metal fragment from the former carbene carbon atom to the oxygen in the S o hypersurface. In spite of the endothermic nature of this rearrangement, it is biased by the more favorable HOMO(imine)-LUMO+1 interaction in the oxygen-coordinated ketene. This species reacts with the imine to yield metalla-zwitterions

Rare adverse event monitoring of medical devices with the use of an automated surveillance tool.

Prospective outcomes surveillance using population level data allows for statistical methodologies and confounder adjustment not supported by the FDA's current monitoring system. We explored propensity score matching integrated into an automated surveillance tool as a method for confounder adjustment in an observational cohort. The application analyzed all patients undergoing PCI via femoral access route from 2002-2006. The rare outcome of interest was retroperitoneal hemorrhage (RPH) and the device was a vascular closure device (VCD). A propensity score model was developed to match VCD and no

Three-dimensional analysis of the intrinsic anatomy of the metatarsal bones.

Knowledge of the anatomy of the forefoot is important for understanding its mechanical pathology and developing specific surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to quantify 3-dimensional morphological parameters, which were proposed for the characterization of the metatarsal intrinsic anatomy. Thirty-five metatarsal bones prepared from 7 cadaver specimens were analyzed according to a new 3-dimensional computer-aided (CA) methodology. Manual and CA measurement techniques were compared. The reality of an intrinsic axial torsion of the metatarsals was underlined with mean values between 3.

A model for educational simulation of neonatal cardiovascular pathophysiology.

Full-body patient simulators provide a technological basis for clinical education without risk to real patients. In a previous study, we described a model for educational simulation of infant cardiovascular physiology. Using essentially the same methodology, we derive a mathematical model for the cardiovascular system of a healthy 1-week-old neonate. Computer simulations of this model result in vital signs that are close to target hemodynamic variables. Simulated systemic arterial pressure waveform and left ventricular pressure-volume loop are realistic, and the system reacts appropriately to

NMR spectroscopy in inhomogeneous B0 and B1 fields with non-linear correlation.

Resolved NMR spectra from samples in inhomogeneous B0 and B1 fields can be obtained with the so-called "ex situ" methodology, employing a train of composite or adiabatic z-rotation RF pulses to periodically refocus the inhomogeneous broadening during the detection of the time-domain signal. Earlier schemes relied on a linear correlation between the inhomogeneous B0 and B1 fields. Here the pulse length, bandwidth, and amplitude of the adiabatic pulses of the hyperbolic secant type are adjusted to improve the refocusing for a setup with non-linear correlation. The field correlation is measured u

The development of reading impairment: a cognitive neuroscience model.

This review discusses recent cognitive neuroscience investigations into the biological bases of developmental dyslexia, a common disorder impacting approximately 5 to 17 percent of the population. Our aim is to summarize central findings from several lines of evidence that converge on pivotal aspects of the brain bases of developmental dyslexia. We highlight ways in which the approaches and methodologies of developmental cognitive neuroscience that are addressed in this special issue-including neuroimaging, human genetics, refinement of cognitive and biological phenotypes, neural plasticity an

Organ weights in human fetuses after formalin fixation: standards by gestational age and body weight.

This study provides new standards of fetal organ weights (brain, heart, liver, pancreas, spleen, lungs, kidneys, adrenals, thymus, and thyroid) and body dimensions (crown-heel and crown-rump lengths, head circumference, and foot length). Subjects came from a large dataset including more than 4,000 fetuses autopsied in fetopathology units of pediatric hospitals in Paris between 1986 and 2001. From this dataset, 673 subjects were carefully selected by exclusion of multiple pregnancies, macerated and malformed fetuses, subjects with abnormal karyotypes, and those with severe infections. Fetal age
