MRI findings of sporadic/simple lymphoepithelial cyst of the parotid gland.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the MRI features of sporadic/simple lymphoepithelial cyst (SLEC) of the parotid gland. METHODS: Ten patients (seven men, three women; mean age, 60 years; age range, 38-77 years) with histopathologically and clinically proven SLEC of the parotid gland who underwent MRI before surgical resection were enrolled in this study. No enrolled patient had HIV infection or Sjögren syndrome. MRI findings of SLEC were retrospectively assessed. RESULTS: We confirmed 10 SLECs larger than 10 mm with a mean maximum diameter of 26.6 mm (range, 12-42 mm). Nine patients (9

Exploitation of the Polymeric Immunoglobulin Receptor for Antibody Targeting to Renal Cyst Lumens in Polycystic Kidney Disease.

Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common life-threatening genetic disease that leads to renal failure. No treatment is available yet to effectively slow disease progression. Renal cyst growth is, at least in part, driven by the presence of growth factors in the lumens of renal cysts, which are enclosed spaces lacking connections to the tubular system. We have shown previously shown that IL13 in cyst fluid leads to aberrant activation of STAT6 via the IL4/13 receptor. Although antagonistic antibodies against many of the growth factors implicated in ADPKD are already avai…

Early and late results of excision of choledochal cysts.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Reports on the late results of choledochal cyst excision with hepaticojejunostomy in children are relatively few. METHODS: Of the 84 patients who had choledochal cyst who came under our care, 79 have had definitive surgery, three are awaiting surgery, one is being observed with Caroli's disease, and the parents of one child have refused surgery. Thirty-eight patients treated decades ago had internal drainage procedures. Since 1972, 41 patients have had cyst excision with hepaticojejunostomy using a 40-cm Roux loop without an antireflux procedure. Early complications in tho

Treatment of recurrent thyroid cysts with ethanol: a randomized double-blind controlled trial.

Thyroid nodules are prevalent; when evaluated by ultrasonography (US), 15-25% of solitary thyroid nodules are cystic or predominantly cystic, and most are benign. Simple aspiration is the treatment of choice, but the recurrence rate is 10-80% depending on the number of aspirations and the cyst volume. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect on recurrence rate of benign recurrent thyroid cysts in a double-blind randomized study comparing ethanol instillation with instillation of isotonic saline and subsequent complete emptying. Sixty-six consecutive patients with recurrent and benign (

Colloid Cyst Presenting With Severe Headache and Bilateral Leg Weakness: Case Report and Review.

Colloid cysts are benign growths commonly found in the third ventricle at the foramen of Monro. They can be asymptomatic or present with a variety of symptoms, including headaches, diplopia, memory problems, psychosis, urinary incontinence, and ataxia. Obstructive hydrocephalus from a colloid cyst is caused by a blockage of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) from the lateral ventricles at the foramen of Monro. Colloid cysts have rarely been reported to cause sudden death. Here we present the case of a 32-year-old female with a known history of a colloid cyst who presented with a headache and transien

Diagnosis of hydatid cyst by percutaneous aspiration: value of electrolyte determinations.

A study was made of the fluid from 11 hydatid cysts (10 hepatic, one renal) and from 50 nonparasitic cysts (25 renal, 10 ovarian, 10 pancreatic and five hepatic). Our analysis indicated that the chloride (range 62-95 mEq/liter), the sodium (range 125-139 mEq/liter) and the potassium content (range 5.1-7.5 mEq/liter) of the former differed significantly (p less than 0.01) from those of the controls. Hydatid cysts may be indistinguishable from others with both CT and ultrasound and therefore the electrolyte data are of diagnostic value when a hydatid cyst is accidentally punctured percutaneously

Microsurgical Outcomes of Third-Ventricle Colloid Cysts Treated via an Interhemispheric Transcallosal Approach: Clinical and Imaging Correlates in a Retrospective Single-Center Series.

OBJECTIVE: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare, benign lesions that can lead to acute cerebrospinal fluid obstruction, rapid neurological deterioration, and sudden death. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, and postoperative outcomes of surgically treated third-ventricle colloid cysts, with emphasis on imaging correlates and age-related patterns of clinical presentation. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 25 consecutive patients who underwent microscopic interhemispheric transcallosal excision of third-ventricle colloid cysts between 20

[A Case of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ(DCIS)Diagnosed by Excisional Biopsy with Benign Cytology Findings of Fine-Needle Aspiration].

Nipple discharge is a common symptom and frequently results from benign tumors. However, there is a 5-30% risk of malignancy. A 65-year-old woman presented at the hospital because of bloody nipple discharge in her right breast. She had noticed an abnormal nipple discharge for several months. Mammography showed focal asymmetric densities without calcification in the middle outer quadrant of her right breast. Ultrasonography indicated a 1.5×1.1 cm sized cyst with fluid-fluid level. Breast MRI showed a simple cyst with a benign contrast enhancement pattern. No malignant cells were observed by fin

Acromioclavicular joint cyst formation in a patient with rotator cuff-tear arthropathy: a rare cause of shoulder discomfort.

We report a case of a 77-year-old man who presented to our shoulder department with a soft tissue mass on his right acromioclavicular (AC) joint. Previously attempted puncture aspiration had revealed serous fluid retention which recurred after each of several drainage attempts. Conventional radiography and MRI of the affected shoulder joint demonstrated a progressed cuff-tear arthropathy with an irreparable tear of the supraspinatus tendon, static superior migration of the humeral head, opening of the AC joint capsule and a superior joint-fluid 'eruption' and accumulation called 'Geyser sign'.

Symptomatic Rathke's cleft cysts; clinical and therapeutic data.

The authors report on a case of symptomatic Rathke's Cleft Cyst (RCC). The only clinical feature was headache. The cystic fluid was aspirated through a trans-sphenoidal approach. The postoperative course was uneventful. The rarity of symptomatic RCC (70 cases described in the literature; 30 operated patients) makes necessary the comparison of all data quoted in the different publications so as to define an appropriate attitude to treatment. It thus seems that the surgical procedure should be limited to an aspiration of the cyst contents through a trans-sphenoidal approach; such a procedure is

Results of laparoscopic treatment of hydatid cysts of the liver.

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported on the laparoscopic treatment of hydatid cysts of the liver. We now report the successful treatment of 18 cysts in 12 patients with a median follow-up of 12 months. METHODS: The standard treatment in the open technique was performed laparoscopically. The main concern was to prevent spillage of the hydatid fluid, for which the puncture and evacuation of the cyst is carried under scolicidal agents cover using 1% cetrimide, thus decreasing the chances of recurrence. RESULTS: In this group of patients we had one biliary leak that ceased spontaneously and o

Intraneural Ganglion Cyst of the Sciatic Nerve Treated Using Arthroscopic Hip Surgery: A Case Report.

This is a rare case of sciatic neuropathy in a 46-year-old man secondary to an intraneural ganglion cyst from the hip joint extending upward to the lumbar plexus and the L5 nerve root. Magnetic resonance neurography showed that the joint fluid passed through a labral tear and extended rostrally along the articular branch and the peroneal portion of the sciatic nerve to near the L5 nerve root. The condition was treated by arthroscopic disruption of the joint connection to the nerve with resolution of the intraneural cyst and partial neurological recovery.

A giant pararectal cyst successfully treated by robotic surgery.

A 50 year-old patient was referred to our department with severe obstructive lower urinary tract symptoms, suprapubic pain and rectal fullness that started after a perianal fistula operation performed one year ago. Radiologic evaluation showed a large pararectal cystic lesion with septa formation on the right side compressing the bladder and prostate. Aspiration of the cystic fluid attempted initially but was not successful. A robotic transperitoneal approach was applied and the cyst was excised completely. On 1-year follow-up, patient did not have any symptoms and cyst was completely disappea

[A case of the lateral ventricle lesion mimicking arachnoid cyst treated by neuroendoscopic surgery].

A 12-year-old female suffered from intermittent headache with nausea. Neuroradiologic studies demonstrated a cystic lesion in the right trigone with content like cerebrospinal fluid. The right inferior horn was isolated and increased in size. Eodoscopic fenestration was attempted using a flexible fiberscope via the inferior horn. Postoperative magnetic resonance image revealed shrinkage of the cyst and reduced size of the right inferior horn. Intermittent headache dissapeared. Neuroendoscopic treatment is a less invasive and effective therapy for intraventricular arachnoid cyst as well that in

Ultrasonic evaluation of simple and ectopic ureteroceles.

Ureteroceles appear as transonic intravesical lesions on ultrasonic demonstration of the bladder, producing a 'cyst within a cyst' appearance. Four patients, three with simple ureteroceles and one with an ectopic ureterocele were investigated by intravenous urography (IVU), ultrasound (US) and cystoscopy. Two patients had bilateral simple ureteroceles with non-dilated ureters and two had unilateral ureteroceles, one simple, and one ectopic with a hydroureter. Previously ultrasonography of the fluid-filled bladder has demonstrated only large ureteroceles. The present study was successful in dem

Development of Glycerol-Rose Bengal-Polidocanol (GRP) foam for enhanced sclerosis of a cyst for cystic diseases.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a common genetic disorder that results in a proliferating and enlarging cyst and ultimately leads to loss of kidney function. Because an enlarged cyst is a primary factor for limited kidney function, the large cyst is surgically removed by laparoscopic deroofing or sclerosant. This a relatively nascent treatment method entails complications and sometimes fail due to the cyst fluid refilling and infection. This study proposes using a more stable and effective polidocanol foam with glycerol and Rose Bengal (GRP form) to prevent cyst regeneration and irritation,…

Temporal crescent syndrome caused by a lateral ventricular glioependymal cyst: case report.

Temporal crescent syndrome is a monocular visual field defect involving the temporal crescent of one eye caused by a retrochiasmal lesion. The most anterior portion of the striate cortex is the only area where the retrochiasmal lesion produces a monocular visual field defect. The authors present the case of a 9-year-old boy who presented with mild headache. MRI revealed a cyst with cerebrospinal fluid signal intensity, occupying the body and trigone of the right lateral ventricle. Conservative treatment with regular clinical and radiological follow-up was chosen because neurological examinatio
