With approximately 40-50% of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) individuals also having a disability, complex communication needs are particularly prevalent in this population. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems can address these complex communication needs, support language acquisition, and facilitate communicative engagement. This article examines (a) the role of AAC in supporting DHH individuals with disabilities (DHH+), (b) the integration of AAC with sign language, and (c) the relevant considerations when assigning and implementing AAC for this group. The literature revi

Deaf scholars have long worked at the margins of academic institutions not designed for them. Designated deaf academic spaces-where deaf ways of knowing, teaching, and communicating are centered-remain rare. This study explores what becomes possible when such a space exists, presenting Dr Deaf as a case study. Drawing on interviews with participants and teachers, we show how deaf epistemologies and pedagogies are enacted through cross-stage responsibility and academic becoming through re-alignment of deaf participants and teachers. We also identify a distinct deaf rhythm that emerges in this s

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most people wore facemasks to protect themselves and others. Whilst this was recommendable, unfortunately facemasks represented a critical problem for deaf people by preventing lipreading. Moreover, the mouth region represents a crucial source of information for inferring emotional states as well as for visually-based social first impressions. An interesting question is whether facemasks impact on social inferences, such as trustworthiness judgments, in a similar vein in deaf and hearing individuals. Our results showed that overall deaf individuals performed simil

Reading requires the transformation of a complex array of visual features into sounds and meaning. For deaf signers who experience changes in visual attention and have little or no access to the sounds of the language they read, understanding the visual constraints underlying reading is crucial. This study aims to explore a fundamental aspect of visual perception intertwined with reading: the crowding effect. This effect manifests as the struggle to distinguish a target letter when surrounded by flanker letters. Through a two-alternative forced choice task, we assessed the recognition of lette

PURPOSE: To associate maternal anxiety with sociodemographic factors, breastfeeding practices, oral habits, and the child's entry into daycare among deaf and hearing (non-deaf) mothers.
METHODS: This retrospective comparative cross-sectional study included 116 mothers (29 deaf and 87 hearing) of children aged between two and five years. Deaf mothers belonged to a reference center in the city, while hearing mothers were contacted in public daycares where their children were enrolled. Mothers underwent interviews covering socio-economic factors and child development-related aspects. Additionall

Difficulties in monitoring reading comprehension result in poor comprehension. One key aspect of monitoring is metacomprehension, which refers to one's awareness of one's own reading comprehension. Previous studies have observed difficulties in metacomprehension among the deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) population. This study aims to determine whether the metacomprehension of DHH students corresponds to their reading score and whether they are truly capable of adjusting their metacomprehension to the difficulty of the text. We evaluated 25 Spanish-speaking DHH students with reading scores approx

The Washington Group Short Set (WGSS) questions are intended to measure the severity of disability and disability status in US federal surveys. We used data from the 2010-2018 National Health Interview Survey to examine the performance of the WGSS visual disability and hearing disability questions in capturing blindness and deafness. We found that the WGSS questions failed to capture 35.7% of blind adults and 43.7% of deaf respondents as having a severe disability, or, per their recommended cut point, as being disabled. Coupled with evidence demonstrating the poor performance of the WGSS quest…

This article explores the interpreter's role and approaches to working with deaf students as seen from deaf individuals' and interpreters' perspectives. A group of 41 formerly mainstreamed deaf individuals and interpreters offered insights into how the interpreter's role in mainstream classrooms influences deaf student autonomy and participation. This research illustrates the significance of autonomy for mainstreamed deaf students and suggests a correlation between the interpreter's role and deaf students' perceived autonomy in the classroom. In addition, the findings suggest that deaf student

Between 2006 and 2016, the team at Whiting Forensic Hospital saw seven defendants who were deaf or hard of hearing for restoration to competence to stand trial. As a result of this experience, the team developed expertise in understanding Deaf Culture, the effects of hearing loss on psychological development and evaluation and treatment techniques for this population. Based on the team's experiences, we discuss best practices to ensure that deaf defendants have the same access as hearing persons to fair treatment by the legal system and to the education and treatment required for restoration.

INTRODUCTION: Postmeningitis deafness appears in 0-11% of the meningitis cases. Cochlear ossification can develop in these patients, which may make the hearing rehabilitation impossible with cochlear implantation. Due to ossification, it is critical to refer patients to the implant centre without any delay.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the time factor between the appearance of deafness and the first examination in a cochlear implant centre, the possibilities and effectivity of hearing rehabilitation.
METHOD: In our tertial referral centre, postmeningitis deafened patients …

Studies have shown the benefits of fingerspelling on literacy skills in school-age deaf and hard-of-hearing students. This study is an observation of 20 first- and second-grade classrooms. The classroom observations were coded for fingerspelling event frequency, type, length, and whether it was chained to print. The observations showed that teachers used an average of 54 fingerspelled events during 40-min lessons. Teachers' frequency of fingerspelling was positively related to students' frequency of fingerspelling. The types of words fingerspelled included Vocabulary (nouns, verbs, adjectives,

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the experience of hospital health professionals in the care of deaf patients.
METHODS: We explored primary qualitative data from the experience of hospital health professionals in caring for deaf patients. A qualitative study with a descriptive phenomenological approach was carried out using face-to-face semi-structured qualitative interviews (N=8). We evaluated the perspective and experience of healthcare professionals caring for a deaf patient through semi-structured interviews (supported by field notes) which were audio recorded, transcribed, and ana

BACKGROUND: The endocytic reabsorption of proteins in the proximal tubule requires a complex machinery and defects can lead to tubular proteinuria. The precise mechanisms of endocytosis and processing of receptors and cargo are incompletely understood. EHD1 belongs to a family of proteins presumably involved in the scission of intracellular vesicles and in ciliogenesis. However, the relevance of EHD1 in human tissues, in particular in the kidney, was unknown.
METHODS: Genetic techniques were used in patients with tubular proteinuria and deafness to identify the disease-causing gene. Diagnosti…

Congenital hearing loss offers a unique opportunity to examine the role of sound in cognitive, social, and linguistic development. Children with hearing loss demonstrate atypical performance across a range of general cognitive skills. For instance, research has shown that deaf school-age children underperform on visual statistical learning (VSL) tasks. However, the evidence for these deficits has been challenged, with mixed findings emerging in recent years. Here, we used a novel approach to examine VSL in the action domain early in development. We compared learning between deaf and hearing in
