In order to explore the mechanism that the furosemide dehydrates and improves the vestibular function in the endolymphatic hydrops. The effects of furosemide on the carbonic anhydrase activity in vestibule were studied by using histocytochemistry and image analysis. The results demonstrated that the furosemide can obviously inhibit the carbonic anhydrase activity. There was no significant difference between the normal ear and the ear with endolymphatic hydrops in the location of the carbonic anhydrase in the vestibule. The principal clinical signs in 59 milk-fed calves with chronic indigestion were general malaise and depression, poor appetite, poor body condition, dehydration, a dull and scaly hair coat, alopecia and clay-like faeces. All the calves had metabolic acidosis, which was associated with an inability to stand up in more than half of them. There were significant differences in the severity of acidosis between the calves that could stand and those that could not. Other signs in some of the calves were dehydration, leucocytosis, and increased activities of liver enzymes.

At a concentration of 50 to 100 micrograms per milliliter, p,p'-DDT (and p,p'-DDE) did not inhibit the rate of hydration or dehydration of carbon dioxide by carbonic anhydrase. At concentrations greater than 500 micrograms per milliliter, partial inhibition of the rate of dehydration of carbonic acid was observed, but this involved precipitation of drug in the reaction vessel. This degree of inhibition suggests that DDT may not inhibit carbonic anhydrase effectively at the usual concentrations found in tissue after exposure of organisms to DDT in the environment.

The performance of the Diarrhoeal Training cum Treatment Unit (DTTU) of NRS Medical College and Hospital, Calcutta, in a 2-year period was evaluated by record analysis. The study revealed that 73.6% cases out of a total 4349 could be successfully managed at the oral rehydration therapy (ORT) area and only 16.5% cases required indoor admission.
