Sleep problems are common in the perinatal period. But the effects of sleep health on long-term postpartum depression and anxiety are underexamined. Using marginal structural models, we estimated the effect of sustained restful sleep quality, or adequate sleep quantity, or both, on clinically significant depression and anxiety at 23- and 32-weeks gestation, and 8-weeks, 8-, and 21-months postpartum. Women (n = 9,211) in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children cohort reported on sleep quality (difficulty falling asleep, and early morning awakening), sleep quantity (< or > 5 hours an

The postpartum confers considerable risk for developing depression. Depressed patients have elevated cortisol concentrations and impaired hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis negative feedback. Chronic stress or corticosterone (CORT) induces a depressive-like phenotype in rodents, including during the postpartum. The present study examined whether nulliparous and postpartum rats were differentially vulnerable to chronic high CORT and whether fluoxetine (FLX) would differentially alter the brain, behavior, and neuroendocrine function depending on reproductive experience. Nulliparous and po

BACKGROUND: The effects of maternal depression on mother-infant relationship quality likely vary according to depression heterogeneity. We investigated the effects of different presentations of major depression on mother-infant emotional availability (EA).
METHODS: Data were obtained from 115 mother-infant dyads from a longitudinal pregnancy cohort. Disorders, symptoms, and antidepressant use were assessed in pregnancy and postpartum, and EA was observed 6-month postpartum. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) were assessed using the Structured Clinical Inter

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depressive symptoms affect one in 10 parents. However, there is a lack of knowledge on issues related to early and appropriate support for depressive parents. The study investigated what kind of support depressive parents need and receive prenatally from health professionals and whether the received support moderates the association between prenatal depressive symptoms and postpartum mental health.
METHODS: The FinChildren survey for parents of babies aged 3-6 months (8977 mothers, 5825 fathers) was conducted in 2020. Parents evaluated their current mental health at the

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant persons with opioid use disorder (OUD) face a multitude of comorbid conditions that may increase the risk of adverse drug and health outcomes. This study characterizes typologies of comorbidities among pregnant persons with OUD and assesses the associations of these typologies with hospitalizations in the first year postpartum.
METHODS: A cohort of pregnant persons with OUD at delivery in 2018 were identified in a Pennsylvania statewide hospital dataset (n = 2055). Latent class analysis assessed 12 comorbid conditions including substance use disorders (SUDs), mental hea

Among Sub-Saharan African women living with HIV (WLWH), pregnancy creates unique stressors that may cause depression. We describe the prevalence of depression among WLWH enrolled in the African Cohort Study (AFRICOS) by pregnancy status and describe factors associated with depression. WLWH < 45 years of age underwent six-monthly visits with depression diagnosed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale. Visits were categorized as "pregnant;" "postpartum" (the first visit made after the last pregnancy visit), and "non-pregnant." The prevalence of depression was calculated fo

BACKGROUND: Episodes of postpartum psychosis have been associated with first pregnancies in women with bipolar I disorder. It is unclear, however, if the effect extends to episodes at other times in relation to childbirth and to women with other mood disorders such as major depression and bipolar II disorder. This primiparity effect, which is also seen in other pregnancy related conditions such as pre-eclampsia, is a potentially important clue to the aetiology of childbirth related mood episodes.
METHODS: Participants were interviewed and case notes reviewed. Best-estimate diagnoses were made

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence and clinical significance of suicidal ideation revealed during perinatal depression screening and estimate the associated suicide risk.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of women completing the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at 24-28 weeks of gestation and 6 weeks postpartum through a suburban integrated health system with approximately 5,000 annual deliveries on two hospital campuses. Suicidal ideation on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and prediction of suicide risk were examined through multivariable modeling and qualitative analysis of

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy during adolescence is a risk factor for adverse medical and psychosocial outcomes, including psychiatric illness. Psychiatric illness is linked with obstetric complications along with impaired maternal functioning in the postpartum period. This article provides a comprehensive review of the research examining the intersection of psychopathology and adolescent pregnancy and the postpartum period.
DESIGN: A literature search was conducted using PubMed (Medline), PsycINFO, and CINAHL for articles published between 1990 and 2013 that examined depression, anxiety, bipola

OBJECTIVE: Premenstrual symptoms may vary across reproductive transitions, but few studies have examined changes, heterogeneity, and correlates of premenstrual symptom burden from recalled prepregnancy to postpartum after menstrual resumption.
METHODS: Among 821 women recruited postpartum at two hospitals in China, 329 completed follow-up after menstrual resumption. Premenstrual symptoms were assessed using the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool for recalled prepregnancy and postpartum symptoms; depressive symptoms were assessed at 6 weeks postpartum. Paired tests, baseline-adjusted linear

BACKGROUND: Depression, stress, and poor-quality sleep are common during pregnancy and postpartum, but the relationship of these factors with reward-related eating is not well understood. This observational cohort study examines associations of depression, stress, and sleep quality with self-reported reward-related eating in pregnancy and postpartum.
METHODS: Participants were enrolled at < 12 weeks gestation and followed through 1 year postpartum. Self-reported measures obtained at baseline and 23-31 weeks postpartum included the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Perceived Stress Scale,

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between self-reported history of maternal depression by treatment status and opioid use after cesarean delivery.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a multicenter randomized trial of individuals who underwent cesarean delivery at 12 U.S. hospitals from 2020 to 2022. We evaluated two exposures for patients with a self-reported history of depression assessed on the enrollment form: treatment (pharmacologic or nonpharmacologic therapy during pregnancy) or no treatment. The primary outcome was inpatient oral opioid use in morphine milligram equivalents

(1) Background: There is a continuing discussion concerning the impact of preterm birth on Maternal-Infant bonding with inconsistent results. The large burden of preterm births calls for research to evaluate the impact of it on material psychological outcome in the early postpartum period. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between maternal postpartum bonding with maternal mental health, socio-demographical factors, and child's characteristics. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. In total, 72 women (a mean age of 31.44 years old) of preterm infants (

A 20 per cent prevalence of mild clinical depression was found in 120 women assessed at about six weeks postpartum. The strongest associated factor was occurrence of recent stressful life events. Previous history of psychiatric disorder, younger age, early postpartum blues, and a group of variables reflecting poor marital relationship and absence of social support were also notable. Poor marital support acted as a vulnerability factor, only producing an effect in presence of stressful life events. Previous psychiatric history produced a strong independent effect, both with and without life eve

Postpartum obese women have an increased risk of breastfeeding difficulties and depression. Retaining the pregnancy weight at 6 months postpartum predicts long-term obesity. Risks for weight retention include excessive gestational weight gain, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, diet, exercise, depression, and duration of breastfeeding. Exercise and reducing total caloric intake promote postpartum weight loss. Intrauterine devices and contraceptive implants are the most effective contraceptives for obese women. Contraceptive pills, patches, and vaginal rings are effective options; however, obese

This study examined the influence of role quality, relationship satisfaction, fatigue, and depression on women s sexuality during pregnancy and after childbirth. Questionnaire data were obtained from 138 women pregnant with their first child, of whom 104 responded at 12 weeks postpartum, and 70 responded at 6 months postpartum. Women reported significant reductions in sexuality during pregnancy and postpartum. Relationship satisfaction explained levels of sexual satisfaction during pregnancy, and was a predictor of sexual desire in the postpartum. Depression was an important predictor of reduc

BACKGROUND: Major depressive episodes (MDEs) are common during pregnancy and postpartum periods, and the consequences can be severe to mother and offspring. Few studies have investigated the clinical factors associated with the onset and remission of perinatal depression in different time points.
METHODS: A cohort of 234 pregnant women was recruited and assessed with structured Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) for diagnoses of MDEs. The severity of mood status was measured with Taiwanese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS-T) and the second edition of

HIV-related stigma is associated with many psychological challenges; however, minimal research has explored how perceived HIV-related stigma intersects with psychosocial issues that mothers living with HIV may experience including depression, perceived stress and social isolation. The present study aims to describe the correlates and predictors of HIV-related stigma in a cohort of women living with HIV (WLWH) from across Ontario, Canada during pregnancy and early postpartum. From March 2011 to December 2012, WLWH ≥ 18 years (n = 77) completed a study instrument measuring independent variables

AIM: To investigate the rate of and risk factors for perinatal depression in an Israeli ultra-orthodox Jewish community and assess the contribution of antenatal nursing intervention to reducing symptoms of postpartum depression.
BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression is recognized globally as a common complication of pregnancy and childbirth, with negative effects on the mother, infant and family. Among Jewish ultra-orthodox women both religion and childbearing play major roles.
DESIGN: Single-group pretest-posttest intervention study.
METHOD: Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Edinburgh Po
