[Exposure to vegetal esters based metal cutting fluids: health effects].

The aim of our research is to study respiratory and dermatologic diseases (irritative and allergic) in a cohort of workers exposed to vegetal esters based metal cutting fluids of the latest generation. A cohort of 81 workers (mean age 34.5 years, seniority 17.4 years), with mean exposure to vegetal esters based metal cutting fluids of 2.8 years, has been subjected to clinical evaluations. The investigation did not reveal any disease or disorder of the respiratory system, any folluculitis or any allergic contact dermatitis caused by sensitization to vegetal esters based metal cutting fluids. On

Skin protection for hairdressers.

The application of protective creams in the hairdressing trade forms part of a complex concept for the prevention of occupational skin disorders. To date, no comparative controlled intervention studies have been carried out using different skin-protective creams. Previously published skin protection plans concerning barrier creams for the hairdressing trade are fairly general or rudimentary, reflecting our still limited knowledge on the subject. Bioengineering studies have even demonstrated a paradoxical effect of a certain skin-protective foam designed for hairdressers. Regarding other barrie

Clinical assessment in the workplace: dermatitis.

The clinical assessment of dermatitis in the workplace is put forward as a series of four decisions: (1) is it dermatitis and not psoriasis, tinea, scabies, etc? (2) Is it contact dermatitis and not atopic, seborrhoeic, discoid, stasis or unclassified eczema? (3) Is it irritant contact dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis? (4) What is/are the probable cause(s)?

Dermatitis among farmers engaged in peri-urban aquatic food production in Hanoi, Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether exposure to wastewater is a risk factor for dermatitis (eczema) among farmers engaged in peri-urban aquatic food production in Hanoi, Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with two follow-ups was conducted from April to December 2005 in two peri-urban communes in Hanoi, one using wastewater and another using river, rain and well water for aquatic food production. In each commune, 100 households were randomly selected and adult household members engaged in farming field work were interviewed in three surveys. Farmers who reported skin problems at the time of in

Quality of life in patients with allergic and immunologic skin diseases: in the eye of the beholder.

Allergic and immunologic skin diseases negatively impact the quality of life (QoL) of affected patients with detrimental consequences. Nonetheless, in everyday clinical practice the evaluation of QoL is often overlooked. Considering the increasing prevalence of atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, hereditary angioedema, cutaneous mastocytosis, and urticaria, it is essential to determine the effects of allergic and immunologic skin diseases on QoL. A joint meeting (GET TOGETHER 2021) of the Italian Society of Allergology, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (SIAAIC) and the Italian Societ

Sensitization to Lanolin in North-Eastern Italy, 1997-2021: Prevalence, Risk Factors and the Impact of Occupation.

Background: Direct skin contact with items containing lanolin can induce sensitization and development of contact dermatitis (CD). This multi-centric study investigated prevalence of lanolin sensitization among 30,269 outpatients from North-Eastern Italy patch tested during 1997-2021. Methods: European baseline and extended Triveneto series were applied on the upper part of patients' back and removed after 48 h. Risk factors for lanolin sensitization were investigated by multiple logistic regression analysis, reporting adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with 95% confidence interval (95%CI). Results. O

Self-image and quality of life of dermatology patients.

OBJECTIVES: The problems of self-image among patients with dermal problems have been seldom explored. As dermal diseases detrimentally affect well-being, functioning and adaptation of dermatology patients, they may decrease the level of self-acceptance. Self-image, on the other hand, may significantly affect the own mental health status and quality of life (QoL) in that group of patients. The aim of our research was to assess mental health status and quality of life of patients with dermal problems in respect of the level of their self-acceptance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants were

Granuloma annulare presenting as contact dermatitis.

Granuloma annulare is a benign idiopathic disorder of the dermis that has various clinical presentations and an unknown etiology. We discuss a patient who presented with a contact dermatitis that demonstrated granuloma annulare on biopsy. The most likely etiologic agent was a substance known as FAZ (an exhaust product of Kodak DryView laser imaging film), to which the patient was exposed in his occupation.

Facial masks vestibulitis: the risk of mismanagement in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the global population to adopt several public health measures, including social distancing, environmental disinfection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), which are still widely recommended although several vaccines are currently available. Dermatological and allergological diseases related to the extended use of the PPEs represent an emerging problem amidst the pandemic. In particular, there are increasing reports of skin damage, occupational dermatoses, Irritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) related to surgical fac

Handheld x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy evaluation of leather chromium and cobalt.

We present a 29-year-old non-atopic male apprentice power lineman and recreational cowboy with a case of allergic contact dermatitis due to both occupational and recreational exposure. He presented with a 4-month history of a pruritic, steroid-responsive, intermittent hand, foot and leg dermatitis. Patch testing was positive for chromium, cobalt and a piece of leather from his cowboy boots. His leather work gloves, inner lining of work harness, work boots and cowboy boots were assessed for chromium and cobalt content with handheld fluorescence x-ray spectrometry. Upon replacement of all leathe

Skin problems of musicians.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the skin problems of high level musicians in a professional orchestra. This study was prompted by our observation of violinists with skin changes. METHODS: Ninety-seven musicians were evaluated. Twelve reporting dermatitis associated with the playing of their instruments were patch tested. We also examined 20 singers (nonplayers). RESULTS: Positive patch test reactions to nickel and colophony were found in only three patients. Musicians were subject to a variety of skin problems from playing their instruments, however, such as hyperhidrosis, cheilitis, and calluses

Dermatology and the cosmetic industry.

Synopsis Co-operation between the cosmetic industry and dermatology is essential for identifying potentially hazardous substances and ensuring optimal product safety. With dermatological consultation, epidemiological surveys of patients or employees in the cosmetic, toiletry or chemical industry provide useful information to distinguish product-induced or occupational dermatitis from other types of contact dermatitis or constitutional disease (such as psoriasis, lichen planus, or disorders of collagen or immune response). Some examples of the inherent complexities of this process and the solut

Concomitant contact-allergic reactions to iodopropynyl butylcarbamate and iodine.

BACKGROUND: Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC) is a broad-spectrum preservative for use in several product types, including cosmetics, in which its concentrations have been limited by EU legislation because of concerns related to its iodine content and release, and the risk of subsequent iodine overdose. OBJECTIVES: To report on concomitant patch test reactions observed with iodine and IPBC in patients sensitized to iodine-containing antiseptics. PATIENTS: Between 2012 and 2018, seven patients, six from Belgium and one from France, two suffering from acute dermatitis during surgical interven

Ethylene oxide as an occupational contact allergen - an underestimated problem?

BACKGROUND: Ethylene oxide (EtO) is a volatile epoxy compound which is used to sterilize medical devices. EtO may cause irritant contact dermatitis, but only few cases of allergic contact dermatitis have been reported yet. OBJECTIVES: About 20 employees of a department for surgery developed eczematous skin reactions at the contact areas to wrist bands of surgical gowns which had been sterilized with EtO. Patch tests were performed to exclude contact allergy. METHODS: Due to the volatility of EtO, patch tests were done with epichlorohydrin (0.1% pet., 1% pet.) which is an epoxy compound chemi

Allergic contact dermatitis caused by cocamide diethanolamine.

BACKGROUND: Cocamide DEA (CAS no. 68603-42-9) is a non-ionic surfactant frequently used in industrial, household and cosmetic products for its foam-producing and stabilizing properties. Contact allergy has been reported quite rarely in the past, but recently several cases were published, raising the question of an increase in the frequency of allergic dermatitis caused by this substance. OBJECTIVES: To describe cocamide DEA-allergic patients and their characteristics observed in our department. METHODS: Medical charts of patients, investigated between 1990 and December 2015, were retrospecti

DNA damage and TNFalpha cytokine production in hairdressers with contact dermatitis.

The present work was undertaken to study in hairdressers exposed to several irritants and allergens (prevalently hair-dyeing) and affected by hand contact dermatitis the possible correlation between exposure and direct-oxidative DNA damage, production of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) and allergic inflammatory disease. We evaluated in 19 hairdressers with hand contact dermatitis, 14 allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and 5 irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) and in a selected control group TNFalpha serum levels by ELISA and direct-oxidative DNA damage by Fpg (formamido-pyrimidine-glycosy

Allergic contact dermatitis associated with reactive dyes in a dark garment: a case report.

In this study, we present a case of a patient who has not been occupationally exposed to reactive dyes, but did present with a dermatitis from wearing a dark cotton garment. The patient experienced reactivation of his dermatitis when rewearing a new unwashed dark T-shirt made of 100% cotton (in fact, the patient reported that it had to be washed at least 3 times before the skin reaction disappeared). He presented positive patch tests to 6 reactive dyes from Chemotechnique textile series. The clothing could not be proved as the true cause of the dermatitis, but resolution occurred upon removal
