Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an infrequent, highly malignant, primary skin tumor derived from neuroendocrine cells. Most MCCs occur in elderly individuals, on sun-exposed areas of the body, with the head and neck being the most common sites. We present 7 patients (2 male and 5 female, age 45-80 years) suffering from MCC and treated between 1993 and 2000. All tumors were located on the head and neck and varied from 0.9 to 2.3 cm in size. Split-thickness skin excision can be used as a one-stage procedure for the accurate diagnosis of flap viability and the immediate treatment of friction-avulsion injuries in severe open fractures. Postoperative pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis that frequently masquerades as a surgical site infection. BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of reports of rapidly arising, isolated or eruptive keratoacanthomas (KA) and squamous cell carcinomas (CSC) on the red part of tattoos tend to suggest a non-fortuitous link with the procedure.
