Tea is the most widely used ancient beverage in the world and black tea possesses many biological effects on the organisms. It acts as an effective antioxidant because of its free radical-scavenging and metal-chelating ability. Due to this, it is active against inflammation, clastogenesis, and several types of cancer. Tea reduces DNA damage and mutagenesis due to oxidative stress or the presence of pro-mutagens through antioxidant function, blocking activation pathways of mutagens, suppressing transcription of enzymes involved etc. Inhibition of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) peroxidation, supp

AIMS: Archived tissue blocks preserve the antigenicity of samples for a long time under normal storage conditions, whereas tissue sections may show a diminished immunoreactivity over time. Little is known about the processes responsible for antigenicity loss and how tissue sections should be conserved for extended storage. Oxidation and drying are presumed mechanisms of antigenicity loss. To prove this, degradation of immunoreactivity was provoked by chemical oxidation, photo-oxidation and artificial drying.
METHODS: First, paraffin sections of an oestrogen receptor (ER) positive breast carci

Periodontal pathology is an unavoidable complication following replantation of avulsed teeth. The present thesis focuses on the etiology, diagnosis, progression and prevention of dentoalveolar ankylosis. The experimental studies were carried out both in vitro and in vivo. Clinical studies were also performed on the progression of ankylosis. Initially, it was determined that the histomorphometrical method used in the animal studies was sufficiently accurate for the estimation of an area of a root surface showing a defined condition. In vivo studies revealed that the periodontal membrane (PDM) o

Nasopulmonary mite infestations are increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to respiratory disease and secondary infections in southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis), yet the environmental persistence and control of these parasites remain poorly understood. We conducted controlled in vitro time-to-event survival experiments to evaluate the persistence of larval Halarachne halichoeri under varying environmental conditions and the efficacy of disinfectants and alternative treatments relevant to marine mammal rehabilitation facilities. We also evaluated the in vitro acaricidal eff

Cronobacter sakazakii is an emerging foodborne pathogen that has gained increasing global attention due to its association with severe infections in neonates, particularly meningitis, sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis. These infections are often associated with contaminated powdered infant formula (PIF), a nonsterile but commonly used alternative to breast milk. We conducted a systematic review using the PRISMA approach and registered it in PROSPERO to synthesize current scientific knowledge on the detection, pathogenic mechanisms, antimicrobial resistance, and mitigation strategies of C.

BACKGROUND: Candida auris is a widely distributed yeast that is considered a dangerous pathogen, with reported mortality rates ranging from 30% to 60%. This yeast shows a high level of resistance to several antifungal agents commonly used to treat systemic infections. The pathogen persists on contaminated surfaces, tolerates hospital-grade disinfectants, survives desiccation and spreads easily through direct or indirect contact. It has been reported on all five continents and is increasingly prevalent in Europe.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution and antifungal susceptibility/resistance

Acinetobacter baumannii is a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections and is classified among the highest-priority antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. Its clinical success reflects the convergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and biological traits that promote environmental persistence and transmission. Acinetobacter baumannii has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past few decades, evolving from a relatively obscure environmental bacterium into a globally recognized multidrug-resistant pathogen. Its prevalence in healthcare settings, particularly intensive care units,

BACKGROUND: Human activities play a significant role in the emergence of infectious diseases. We aimed to test whether artificial irrigation affects the occurrence of a zoonotic bacteria sensitive to desiccation, pathogenic Leptospira species (pathoLep), in micromammals inhabiting Mediterranean ecosystems.
METHODS: A total of 361 individuals, including 217 Algerian mice (Mus spretus), 79 wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), and 65 greater white-toothed shrews (Crocidura russula), were captured during the four seasons of 2022 in six sites along a riparian forest close to a large city in north-east

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever (YF) is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Symptoms range from mild fever to severe complications such as jaundice and haemorrhages, which can be fatal. Martinique, a French island in the Caribbean, has remained YF-free since 1908. However, the reintroduction of A. aegypti in the 1970s, the limited scope of mandatory vaccination-currently required only for international travellers to endemic areas-and increased connectivity to YF-endemic regions heighten its vulnerability. To inform local preparedness activities, we assessed the risk of

The Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri (Krefft 1870), is the sole extant member of the Ceratodontidae within the Dipnoi, a small order of sarcopterygian (lobe-finned) fishes, that is thought to be the earliest branching species of extant lungfishes, having changed little over the last 100 million years. To extend studies on anatomical adaptations associated with the fish-tetrapod transition, the ultrastructure of the cornea and iris is investigated using light and electron (transmission and scanning) microscopy to investigate structure-function relationships and compare these to other

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The transorbital approach varies by the extent of bony removal and the target. Orbital rim-sparing transorbital approach with removal of only the orbit's posterior wall provides optimal cosmetic results, without the need for reconstruction. The size of this corridor, limited by the medial globe retraction, has not yet been defined and is difficult to determine in cadavers because of postmortem tissue desiccation. By using patient-specific models in virtual reality, precise areas and degrees of surgical freedom (AOF and DOF, respectively) provided by globe retraction

High-pressure processing is a nonthermal method of food preservation that uses pressure to inactivate microorganisms. To ensure the effective validation of process parameters, it is important that the design of challenge protocols consider the potential for resistance in a particular species. Herein, the responses of 99 diverse Salmonella enterica strains to high pressure are reported. Members of this population belonged to 24 serovars and were isolated from various Canadian sources over a period of 26 years. When cells were exposed to 600 MPa for 3 min, the average reduction in cell numbers f

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal insufflation with warm-humidified (WH) CO2 gas during minimally invasive surgical procedures is purported to prevent hypothermia and peritoneal desiccation and is associated with decreased postoperative IL-6 levels. This randomized study's purpose was to determine the clinical impact of WH versus cold-dry (CD) CO2 in minimally invasive colon resection (MICR), and to assess perioperative plasma levels of IL-6, TIMP-1, sVEGF-R1, and HSP-70 after MICR.
METHODS: Operative and short-term clinical data plus perioperative blood samples were collected on MICR patients randomi

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is frequently done for the evaluation of chronic low backache (CLBA), however, its significance in Indian patients has not been evaluated. We report here the MRI findings in patients with CLBA and their sensitivity and specificity with clinical evidence of radiculopathy and localized CLBA as well as correlate these with pain severity and disability.
METHODS: Seventy two patients with CLBA aged 20-70 yr without trauma, infection, tumour, metastasis and vascular malformation were included in the study. Their demographic characteristics,

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an important neglected, emerging, mosquito-borne disease with severe negative impact on human and animal health. Mosquitoes in the Aedes genus have been considered as the reservoir, as well as vectors, since their transovarially infected eggs withstand desiccation and larvae hatch when in contact with water. However, different mosquito species serve as epizootic/epidemic vectors of RVF, creating a complex epidemiologic pattern in East Africa. The recent RVF outbreaks in Somalia (2006-2007), Kenya (2006-2007), Tanzania (2007), and Sudan (2007-2008) showed extension to

Among Anoplura, the family Echinophthiriidae includes species that infest pinnipeds and otters. Previous evidence obtained from pinnipeds infested by echinophthiriids, specifically from seals, indicates that flippers are the preferred infestation sites, while lice from fur seals select areas in the pelage. We studied habitat selection of Antarctophthirus microchir on South American sea lion pups (Otaria flavescens Shaw, 1800) from Patagonia, Argentina, during the austral summer of 2009. We found a clear pattern of habitat selection: eggs are laid on the dorsal surface; nymphs 1 hatch there and

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the ablation of segmental glissonian pedicle by ultrasound-guided radiofrequency in precision liver resection in porcine model.
METHODS: The study was carried out on 6 Bama miniature pigs. Coagulative desiccation of the vessels feeding the segment to be resected was induced by introduction of a "cooled-tip" radiofrequency electrode under intraoperative ultrasound guidance at the level of the vessels. Then, an area of marked discoloration on the surface of the liver became obvious. Liver parenchymal transection followed without any form of hepatic inflow occlusion. Th

Vertebrates expanded their habitats from aquatic to terrestrial environments during the course of evolution. In parallel, osmoregulatory and cardiovascular systems evolved to counter the problems of desiccation and gravity on land. In our physiological studies on body fluid and blood pressure regulation in various vertebrate species, we found that osmoregulatory and cardiovascular hormones have changed their structure and function during the transition from aquatic to terrestrial life. In fact, Na(+)-regulating and vasodepressor hormones play essential roles in fishes, while water-regulating a
