A randomized, blinded clinical evaluation of a novel microwave device for treating axillary hyperhidrosis: the dermatologic reduction in underarm perspiration study.

BACKGROUND: Duration of effect and effectiveness limit current options for treating axillary hyperhidrosis. A new microwave procedure for treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis has been tested. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adults with primary axillary hyperhidrosis were enrolled in a randomized, sham-controlled, blinded study. Subjects were required to have a Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS) score of 3 or 4 and baseline sweat production greater than 50 mg/5 min. Procedures were administered using a proprietary microwave energy device that isolates and heats target tissue. Respo

Oral contraceptive use changes brain activity and mood in women with previous negative affect on the pill--a double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized trial of a levonorgestrel-containing combined oral contraceptive.

OBJECTIVE: Most women on combined oral contraceptives (COC) report high levels of satisfaction, but 4-10% complain of adverse mood effects. The aim of this randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial was to investigate if COC use would induce more pronounced mood symptoms than placebo in women with previous history of COC-induced adverse mood. A second aim was to determine if COC use is associated with changes in brain reactivity in regions previously associated with emotion processing. METHODS: Thirty-four women with previous experience of mood deterioration during COC use were rand

Hair regrowth with topical triiodothyronine ointment in patients with alopecia areata: a double-blind, randomized pilot clinical trial of efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormone receptors are expressed in hair follicles and it is known that thyroid hormones can have a positive effect on hair growth, i.e. process which is disrupted in alopecia areata. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of topical triiodothyronine in patients with patchy alopecia areata. METHODS: Ten patients with patchy alopecia areata were treated with triiodothyronine and placebo applied twice daily to either of two bilaterally symmetrical patches for 12 weeks. The two sides were randomly assigned following simple randomization procedure to o

Lack of an effect of high dose isoflavones in men with prostate cancer undergoing androgen deprivation therapy.

PURPOSE: The profound hypogonadism due to androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer results in complications such as sexual dysfunction, poor quality of life, vasomotor symptoms and altered cognition. Since estrogen is associated with cardiovascular risks, phytoestrogens are being increasingly evaluated as a potential treatment for these adverse effects. We evaluated the effects of high dose isoflavones, equivalent to that consumed by Asian populations, on the aforementioned consequences of androgen deprivation therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 33 men undergoing androgen depri

Pemphigus pain: a review on management.

UNLABELLED: Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune disease that commonly presents with painful persistent erosions and ulcers. OBJECTIVE: The current literature has focused on managing and maintaining remittance of this life-threatening disease. However, remission is not instantaneous and chronic pain is common. In this manuscript, we review the current peer reviewed works that elaborate specifically on pain management in pemphigus patients. METHODS: A medline search was preformed and included any case report, review, clinical trial, or other publication that covered the subject matter. RESULT

Treatment of naturally acquired common colds with zinc: a structured review.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 20 years, the use of zinc as an over-the-counter alternative therapy for the common cold has vastly grown in popularity. Recent reports of potentially permanent anosmia caused by intranasal zinc therapy warrant careful analysis of the therapeutic effects of zinc. METHODS: A search of the Medline database (including articles published during 1966-2006) for studies of zinc and the common cold produced 105 published reports. Fourteen were randomized, placebo-controlled studies that examined the effect of zinc lozenges, nasal sprays, or nasal gels on naturally acquired c

Photodynamic therapy of acne vulgaris using 5-aminolevulinic acid versus methyl aminolevulinate.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that photodynamic therapy (PDT) is effective in the treatment of acne vulgaris. No studies have compared the treatment effect of aminolevulinic acid-PDT (ALA-PDT) and methyl aminolevulinate-PDT (MAL-PDT). OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the treatment effect and tolerability of ALA-PDT versus MAL-PDT in the treatment of acne vulgaris in a controlled randomized investigator-blinded trial. METHODS: Fifteen patients with at least 12 facial inflammatory acne lesions had one split-face PDT treatment with MAL and ALA. RESULTS: Twelve weeks after treatment we f

Multivitamin-mineral supplementation is not as efficacious as is iron supplementation in improving hemoglobin concentrations in nonpregnant anemic women living in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Iron supplements improve hemoglobin status and reduce anemia due to iron deficiency. It is not known whether multiple micronutrient (MM) supplements are as efficacious as are iron supplements alone in improving hemoglobin concentrations. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a randomized, double-blind community trial in Mexico to compare the efficacy of MM supplements containing iron with that of iron alone in improving hemoglobin concentrations in nonpregnant women. DESIGN: Nonpregnant women (n = 158) were recruited from a semirural community in Mexico and were randomly assigned to receive ir

Midazolam pretreatment reduces etomidate-induced myoclonic movements.

During induction of anaesthesia with etomidate, myoclonic muscle movements are frequent. In this study, pretreatment with a small dosage of etomidate or midazolam was compared with placebo for the prevention of myoclonic muscle movements. Sixty patients, premedicated with oral midazolam, were pretreated in a randomized double-blinded fashion with etomidate 0.05 mg/kg i.v., midazolam 0.015 mg/kg i.v. or normal saline i.v. (placebo) in three groups of 20 patients each. The pretreatment was followed after 90 seconds by etomidate 0.3 mg/kg i.v. One minute after onset of hypnosis, induction of anae

Acute cholecystokinin effects on event-related potentials in healthy volunteers.

This study investigated the effects of a continuous slow infusion of cholecystokinin tetrapeptide (CCK-4), a neuropeptide with panicogenic properties, on brain event-related potentials (ERPs) in healthy adults. Twenty-four volunteers, 15 females and 9 males, were assigned to infusion with either placebo or CCK-4 in a randomized, double-blind, parallel group design. ERPs, elicited within a standard auditory odd-ball paradigm requiring the counting of rare (20%) occurring 'deviant' tones interspersed among more frequent (80%) occurring 'standard' tones, were assessed once before infusion, and at

Randomized, controlled human challenge study of the safety, immunogenicity, and protective efficacy of a single dose of Peru-15, a live attenuated oral cholera vaccine.

Peru-15 is a live attenuated oral vaccine derived from a Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor Inaba strain by a series of deletions and modifications, including deletion of the entire CT genetic element. Peru-15 is also a stable, motility-defective strain and is unable to recombine with homologous DNA. We wished to determine whether a single oral dose of Peru-15 was safe and immunogenic and whether it would provide significant protection against moderate and severe diarrhea in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human volunteer cholera challenge model. A total of 59 volunteers were randomly al

Daytime 50 Hz magnetic field exposure and plasma melatonin and urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin concentration profiles in humans.

Concern about the health effects of extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields (MF) has been raised by epidemiological studies indicating an association between certain cancers and living near power lines or working in high electric field environments. Alterations in pineal function have been proposed as a mechanism through which power-frequency MFs may interact with living organisms. A double blind laboratory study was performed to evaluate daytime exposure effects of 100 microT root mean square (rms) 50 Hz MF. Three head exposure sessions of 30 min each were performed: sham, continuous, a
