Can early bacterial complications of aspiration with respiratory failure be predicted?

We studied the early infectious complications of all children admitted for intensive care over a six-year period who were at high risk of ha … less than 5000), and a potential pathogen in tracheal secretions. Patients' diagnoses included near-drowning (13), aspirated foreign body (5), observed aspiration of gastric contents in a hospitalized patient (2), and hydrocarbon aspiration (1). Of 21 high-risk patients, five (23.8%) had infections and two (9.5%) had possible infections in the first 48 hou …

Patterns of injury in children.

Trauma is the leading cause of death for children over 1 year of age. This study was undertaken to identify the patterns of injury among chi … njury (P less than .01). The overall mortality rate was 2.4%. Child abuse, gunshot/stab wounds, and drowning had the highest mortality rates, but injuries to motor-vehicle crash occupants and pedestrians accounted for the greatest number of deaths.

Postmortem biochemistry: Current applications.

The results of biochemical analyses in specimens obtained postmortem may aid death investigation when diabetic and alcoholic ketoacidosis is suspected, when death may have been the result of drowning, anaphylaxis, or involved a prolonged stress response such as hypothermia, and in the diagnosis of disease processes such as inflammation, early myocardial infarction, or sepsis. There is often cross-over with different disciplines, in particular with clinical and forensic toxicology, since some endogenous substances such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and insulin can be used as poisons. …

Preventing unintentional childhood injury at home: injury circumstances and interventions.

New Zealand's (NZ) preschoolers carry the greatest injury burden among children aged 0-14 years. These injuries commonly occur at home. To identify how NZ addresses child injury the 1990s national injury datasets and associated free text were examined retrospectively, NZ injury circumstances and interventions were compared to internationally recognised hazards and best practice, and whether NZ interventions addressed common circumstances of injury was assessed. Certain injuries, often associated with activities of daily living, were not addressed by interventions, although most interventions a

Causes of mortality of albatross chicks at Midway Atoll.

As part of an investigation of the effect of plastic ingestion on seabirds in Hawaii, we necropsied the carcasses of 137 Laysan albatross (Diomedea immutabilis) chicks from Midway Atoll in the Pacific Ocean during the summer of 1987. Selected tissues were collected for microbiological, parasitological, toxicological or histopathological examinations. Dehydration was the most common cause of death. Lead poisoning, trauma, emaciation (starvation) and trombidiosis were other causes of death; nonfatal nocardiosis and avian pox also were present. There was no evidence that ingested plastic caused m

von Willebrand factor in cadaveric urine for forensic investigation.

Preliminary experimental study of urinary von Willebrand factor (VWF) concentration was undertaken to evaluate the utility of this parameter in forensic investigations. ELISA was used to measure VWF concentration. Correlations of urinary VWF with cause of death and postmortem interval (PMI) were ascertained. As PMI advanced, urinary VWF increased but plasma VWF did not. Cause of death was not significantly correlated with VWF. This study indicated the possibility that urinalysis would be helpful to estimate PMI.

Vomiting is not associated with poor outcomes in pediatric victims of unintentional submersions.

INTRODUCTION: The outcome of submersion victims depends on submersion duration and the availability of timely and effective resuscitation. The prognostic implication of vomiting during resuscitation of submersion victims is unclear. The study sought to determine whether vomiting during resuscitation in children treated for unintentional submersion injuries adversely impacts outcome. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of unintentional submersion victims under age 18 treated at an urban tertiary-care children's hospital from 2003-2009. Submersion and victim details were obtained from hospi

Fatalities in the Peace Corps. A retrospective study: 1962 through 1983.

Fatalities among Peace Corps volunteers were analyzed for 1962 through 1983, with individual case histories reviewed for all deaths from 1977 through 1983. Unintentional injuries accounted for 70% of the 185 deaths of Peace Corps volunteers, with motor vehicle crashes the number 1 cause of death. The death rate from unintentional injuries for women was significantly higher than the comparable US rate. Motorcycles caused 12% of all Peace Corps deaths and 33% of all motor vehicle deaths. Suicide has emerged as a leading cause of death among volunteers, accounting for 13% of all deaths from 1981

Sports-Related Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest due to External Causes, Including Commotio Cordis, at Schools in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: To describe the characteristics and outcomes of sports-related out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) due to external causes, i … eball (n = 8), and swimming (n = 4). The leading etiology was commotio cordis (n = 15), followed by drowning (n = 8). Among the 15 cases meeting our operational definition of commotio cordis, automated external defibrillator (AED) pads were applied in 14 (93%), shocks were delivered in 13 (87%), and 12 (80%) achieved a favorable neurological outcome. On the Brink, a Population of Hedgehogs in Central London.

Numbers of the West European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) have significantly declined in Britain and Europe over the past 50 years. In cen … uvenile deaths (96%) were caused by predators. Other causes included road accidents, infections and drowning. Hedgehog distribution shifted over time. Initially widespread across the park, they began vanishing from the south and west in 2015, coincident with a population drop in 2016. Since then, they have mostly been found in the park's northeast quadrant …

Urban-rural disparities in injury mortality in China, 2002-2021.

BACKGROUND: Injury represents a major public health concern both globally and in China, with persistent urban-rural disparities posing a par … de, and falls, although cause-specific urban-rural disparities were most pronounced for suicide and drowning. The urban-rural gap widened significantly over the study period for falls and poisoning. CONCLUSIONS: Persistent urban-rural disparities in injury mortality highlight the need for targeted, context-specific injury prevention strategies in rural ar …

Trends of fatal unintentional injuries among working-age adults in Finland between 1998 and 2022.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injuries pose significant challenges to public health, impacting individuals and communities. They also create significant economic costs for society as a whole. Common preventable fatal unintentional injuries among adults of working age include, among others, falls, poisonings, traffic accidents and drowning. AIM: To examine the incidence trends of the changes in fatal unintentional injuries among working-age (25-64) adults in Finland, with alcohol and/or drug intoxication as a contributing cause of death. METHODS: We used open data from the Causes of Death registe…

[Cardiac dysfunction secondary to an adrenergic storm or cardiomyopathy of stress among child victims of traumatism].

OBJECTIVE: To provide information specific to a catecholaminergic storm during a violent stress in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two clinical observations in children who suffered violent trauma. FIRST CASE: a boy aged 12 years victim of a drowning in Stage 3 admitted to the pediatric intensive care 02.08.2015. He was intubated, ventilated, sedated with benzodiazepines and morphine. Cardiac exploration revealed a global hypokinesis with septal dyskinesia, a 45% FES offset a slight excess of ST, a troponin I to 31.46pg/mL NT-proBNB to 1291pg/mL.
