CONCLUSIONS: While infants under the age of 1 year exhibited a high rate of abnormal intensities in the middle ear and mastoid cavities, older infants showed no abnormal intensities in these regions. From the signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted MRI, the abnormal intensities in the middle ear cavity were considered to represent liquid effusion. Taken together with the findings of temporal bone CT, the abnormal intensities in the mastoid cavity were considered to represent bone marrow.

A 37-year-old female presented for surgery with central perforation of the eardrum with granulation. Mastoidectomy had been performed 18 years ago following chronic mastoiditis. As the clinical picture now suggested a suspected cholesteatoma, radiological imaging was performed. The CT scan revealed specification of the mastoid and the tympanic cavity. Ear syringing is a procedure by which the external auditory canal is irrigated with a normal saline at body temperature. It is a procedure which every doctor or nurse should be able to perform proficiently. A study of 622 patients that needed ear syringing was done between December 1999 and June 2001 to determine its trend. The Klotho mouse is a recently developed model that exhibits phenotypes resembling human aging. We used this model to investigate sensorineural hearing loss from the point of view that it may be considered an issue of aging. Treating a child with a draining ear is a common occurrence in the pediatric primary office. The symptoms of otorrhea are broad, and a multitude of factors must be considered in arriving at a diagnosis. We report the first case (to our knowledge) of malignant melanoma of amelanotic type arising from the mucosa of the middle ear. An 81-year-old man who presented with right hearing loss was diagnosed as having otitis media with effusion at an otolarygology clinic. Despite subsequent treatment, he developed otorrhea and otalgia. Furthermore, a granular mass was found in the pars flaccida of the tympanic membrane. OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate an ear piercing and earring retention method for individuals with metal hypersensitivity.
SETTING: Private facial plastic surgery practice associated with a tertiary care medical center.
METHODS: Thirty-one patients with a history of hypersensitivity to metallic jewelry (62 ears) underwent earlobe piercing with an intravenous catheter.
RESULTS: None of the patients experienced an infection or hypersensitivity reaction. All patients were able to wear nickel-free earrings for short periods without using the shortened catheter.
