Investigating Variability and Malleability of Speech-Language Pathologists' Responsive Talk With Children: An Early-Efficacy Trial.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this early-stage efficacy study were to examine speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') use of responsive talk with children and to determine the extent to which responsive talk can be modified through brief clinician education or an in situ, tablet-based feedback system, GENIE, that provided real-time prompts to use responsive talk. METHOD: Eleven SLPs (certified clinicians and graduate students) and 11 typically developing preschool-aged children participated in a quasi-experimental study. SLPs were paired with a randomly assigned child to complete two structured inte

Training for Professional Uncertainty: Socialization of Medical Students Through the Residency Application Process.

PURPOSE: Uncertainty in medical decision making is a well-described phenomenon, and numerous scholars have acknowledged and illustrated the process of training medical students to grapple with this aspect of medical practice. While clinical uncertainty has been defined previously, medical trainees face additional forms of uncertainty beyond the clinical setting that have not, as yet, been investigated empirically. One area in which uncertainty can manifest outside of the clinical setting is during professional development. Medical students face substantial stress and ambiguity throughout their

Assessment of Diagnosed Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain Conditions by Predoctoral Dental Students: A Pilot Study.

Temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain (TMD/OFP) conditions are challenging to diagnose for predoctoral dental students due to the multifactorial etiology, complexity, and controversial issues surrounding these conditions. The aim of this study was to determine if patients in the clinic of one U.S. dental school reported existing signs and symptoms of TMD/OFP, whether the dental students diagnosed the condition based on the reported signs and symptoms, and if the condition was then treated. The study was based on a retrospective analysis of electronic health record data over a three-ye

Perception of the relationship between TMD and orthodontic treatment among orthodontists.

INTRODUCTION: The consensus about the relationship between TMD and orthodontic treatment has gone from a cause and effect association between TMD and orthodontic treatment to the idea that there is no reliable evidence supporting this statement. OBJECTIVE: To assess the beliefs, despite scientific evidence, of Brazilian orthodontists about the relationship between TMD and orthodontic treatment with regards to treatment, prevention and etiology of TMD. METHODS: A survey about the relationship between TMD and orthodontic treatment was prepared and sent to Brazilian orthodontists by e-mail and

Australian training for contemporary airway management of obstructive sleep apnoea in ENT surgery: current status and future recommendations.

BACKGROUND: The identification and treatment of adult obstructive sleep apnoea and other sleep-related breathing issues demands nuanced clinical judgement to determine if surgery is appropriate and which surgery should be performed. No study to date has evaluated the sleep medicine curriculum from the perspective of the Australian ENT surgical trainee, or addressed potential strategies for improving levels of surgical skill and knowledge in this field. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was used to assess knowledge of sleep surgery in trainees enlisted with the Australian Society of Otolaryngo

Resident surgical experience with lens and corneal refractive surgery: survey of the ASCRS Young Physicians and Residents Membership.

UNLABELLED: A 43-question survey was e-mailed to all resident members of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), ASCRS members in practice for 5 or fewer years, and residency program directors of 118 U.S. Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited ophthalmology programs (for distribution to their residents) in June 2010. Two hundred eighty-five of 2279 surveys sent were completed and returned, for a response rate of 12.5%. Most respondents (88.7%) had served as primary surgeon in more than 100 cataract surgeries. U.S. military officer participation in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Epidemic Intelligence Service (1951-2001).

The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) was created in 1951 to provide epidemiologists to investigate natural and intentional disease epidemics. From an initial class of 23 U.S. citizens, the program has evolved into a globally recognized, hands-on learning experience, accepting approximately 65 to 75 new officers each year. The first U.S. military epidemic intelligence service officer (EISO) was accepted into the program in 1994. Since that time, 12 such officers have completed, or have begun, EIS training. They have comprised 2.1% of all EISOs from 1994 to 2001 and 0.47% of all EISOs. This t

Teaching public health related to the elderly.

It has become axiomatic that the world is aging, not just in the developed countries, but in the less developed regions as well. In 1992 the global elderly population (age 65+) was estimated to be almost 350,000,000 persons, or more than 6% of the world total. During that year the net balance of the world's elderly grew by more than 800,000 persons each month. Projections to the year 2010 indicate that the net monthly gain will rise to more than 1.1 million elderly people. In the early 1990s, 26 countries had more than 2,000,000 elderly persons. The projections suggest that this number could i

Educational utility of observational workplace-based assessment modalities in Australian vocational general practice training: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Direct observation, workplace-based assessments (WBAs) are a fundamental component of competency-based postgraduate medical education. In Australian general practice vocational training, external clinical teaching visits (ECTVs) are key observation-based WBAs. Traditionally, ECTVs are conducted face-to-face, but the COVID-19 pandemic saw the development and implementation of remote ECTV modalities. It remains unknown if perceived educational utility of remote ECTVs differs from traditional face-to-face ECTVs. This study explored the educational utility of ECTVs, including face-to-f

A holistic review of the medical school admission process: examining correlates of academic underperformance.

BACKGROUND: Despite medical school admission committees' best efforts, a handful of seemingly capable students invariably struggle during their first year of study. Yet, even as entrance criteria continue to broaden beyond cognitive qualifications, attention inevitably reverts back to such factors when seeking to understand these phenomena. Using a host of applicant, admission, and post-admission variables, the purpose of this inductive study, then, was to identify a constellation of student characteristics that, taken collectively, would be predictive of students at-risk of underperforming du

Team working to improve outcome in vestibular schwannoma surgery.

The concept of the 'learning curve' in the early years of consultant appointment is no longer acceptable and yet, for most complex operations, learning is a career-long process. Sub-specialization offers part of the solution to this problem by concentrating expertise, but there remains the question of how to introduce new team members without adversely affecting patient outcome. Shortened training and an increasingly aware public, who are more questioning of the experience and outcomes of those treating them, has required the surgical profession to move away from individual consultant practice

"Horizontal violence among nursing students and newly graduated nurses: A systematic review".

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is prevalent among healthcare professionals. Horizontal violence, defined as aggression between individuals of equal hierarchical status, is a significant issue in nursing. Nursing students and newly graduated nurses are particularly vulnerable due to inexperience, lack of coping strategies, and personal risk factors such as young age. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize current literature on horizontal violence experienced by nursing students and newly graduated nurses, determining prevalence, manifestations, consequences, and intervention strategies. METHOD: A systemati

Design and Implementation of a Primary Palliative Care Education Program for Hematology-Oncology Advanced Practice Providers: Insights From a Three-Year Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care (PC) integration within oncology leads to improved patient-reported outcomes. However, oncology teams are increasingly tasked with providing PC as demand for such services continues to outpace the number of available PC specialists. Additionally, the number of oncologists nationally has remained stable, which has led to greater responsibility for advanced practice providers (APPs), many of whom never received formal PC training. Unfortunately, despite strong advocacy for training within APP programs, PC is not consistently offered. PURPOSE: Our aim was to create a
