An experimental test of energy and electrolyte supplementation as a mitigation strategy for white-nose syndrome.

Fungi are increasingly recognised as harmful pathogens of wildlife. White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a fungal disease that has killed millions of hibernating bats in North America. High mortality has driven research to identify management strategies for the disease. Increased energy expenditure and fat depletion, as well as fluid loss, hypotonic dehydration and electrolyte depletion appear to be key aspects of WNS pathophysiology. Bats with WNS spend energy too quickly and also lose fluids containing water and electrolytes from lesions on exposed skin surfaces. During periodic arousals, bats often…

The forgotten electrolyte, when hypercalcaemia manifest as gait instability and altered mental status.

An altered mental status presents a diagnostic challenge for many clinicians. Described here is a case of primary hyperparathyroidism not initially suspected until after a thorough neurological and infectious cause were excluded. A 60-year-old woman presented with altered mental status and gait instability. Her family noticed progressive gait instability and mood swings for the past 4 months. Initial imaging and laboratory values were unable to explain her symptoms. On transfer out of the intensive care unit, her corrected calcium was found to be 13.3 mg/dL with an elevated parathyroid hormone

Administering Polyethylene Glycol Electrolyte Solution Via a Nasogastric Tube: Pulmonary Complications.

BACKGROUND: Patients sometimes require insertion of a nasogastric tube for the administration of a large volume of a polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution. If the tube is malpositioned, the risk for direct instillation of the solution into the lung increases. The risk for aspiration also increases if the infusion rate exceeds gastrointestinal tolerance. PURPOSE: To review published cases of patients' experiencing adverse pulmonary events after administration of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution via a nasogastric tube and to offer suggestions to prevent these outcomes. METHODS: A se

Diuretic-associated electrolyte disorders in the elderly: risk factors, impact, management and prevention.

Electrolyte and acid-base disorders are commonly encountered adverse effects of various diuretic agents, which are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality especially in elderly patients. Diuretic use is associated with hyponatraemia, hypernatraemia, hypokalaemia, hyperkalaemia, hyperuricaemia and alterations in magnesium, calcium, phosphate and acid-base homeostasis. Clinical studies have provided important data on the relative frequency and risk factors for these diuretic-associated electrolyte and acid-base disorders. Old age is one of the most recognized risk factors for diuret

Effect of lithium on behavioral disinhibition induced by electrolytic lesion of the median raphe nucleus.

RATIONALE: Alterations in brainstem circuits have been proposed as a possible mechanism underlying the etiology of mood disorders. Projections from the median raphe nucleus (MnR) modulate dopaminergic activity in the forebrain and are also part of a behavioral disinhibition/inhibition system that produces phenotypes resembling behavioral variations manifested during manic and depressive phases of bipolar disorder. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the effect of chronic lithium treatment on behavioral disinhibition induced by MnR lesions. METHODS: MnR electrolytic lesions were per

Evidence of dehydration and electrolyte disturbances in cases of perennial ryegrass toxicosis in Australian sheep.

CASE REPORT: Perennial ryegrass toxicosis (PRGT) is a common disease entity in Australia, presenting as an association of clinical signs including alterations in normal behavioural, ataxia ('staggers'), ill thrift and gastrointestinal dysfunction ('scours'). Clinical signs can range in severity from mild (gait abnormalities and failure to thrive) to severe (seizures, lateral recumbency and death). Presentation across the flock is usually highly variable. PRGT is caused by toxins produced by the endophytic fungus Neotyphodium lolii, a symbiont of perennial ryegrass that is present in pastures a

Control of renal calcium, phosphate, electrolyte, and water excretion by the calcium-sensing receptor.

Through regulation of excretion, the kidney shares responsibility for the metabolic balance of calcium (Ca(2+)) with several other tissues including the GI tract and bone. The balances of Ca(2+) and phosphate (PO4), magnesium (Mg(2+)), sodium (Na(+)), potassium (K(+)), chloride (Cl(-)), and water (H2O) are linked via regulatory systems with overlapping effects and are also controlled by systems specific to each of them. Cloning of the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) along with the recognition that mutations in the CaSR gene are responsible for two familial syndromes characterized by abnormalit

Mutations in kelch-like 3 and cullin 3 cause hypertension and electrolyte abnormalities.

Hypertension affects one billion people and is a principal reversible risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Pseudohypoaldosteronism type II (PHAII), a rare Mendelian syndrome featuring hypertension, hyperkalaemia and metabolic acidosis, has revealed previously unrecognized physiology orchestrating the balance between renal salt reabsorption and K(+) and H(+) excretion. Here we used exome sequencing to identify mutations in kelch-like 3 (KLHL3) or cullin 3 (CUL3) in PHAII patients from 41 unrelated families. KLHL3 mutations are either recessive or dominant, whereas CUL3 mutations are dominant

Specific ion effects on adsorption at the solid/electrolyte interface: a probe into the concentration limit.

Adsorption of organic acid at the mineral oxide-electrolyte interface has been explored. The adsorption of 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid onto α-alumina illustrates that specific ion effects show up at very low salt concentration (<0.05 mM). These surprising Hofmeister effects occur at salt concentrations an order of magnitude lower than in a previous study ( J. Colloid Interface Sci. 2010, 344, 482 ). Salts enhance adsorption and specifically at ≤0.05 mM. With increasing concentration of ion, the adsorption density decreases. The results are accounted for by incorporating the ion size and dispersi

Catalytic oxidation mechanism of oxy-nitrogen species (NO(x)) in FeSO(4) electrolyte.

The effect of small concentrations of nitrite on the oxidation of ferrous ions in sulfuric acid under oxygen pressure at 25°C was investigated. A mathematical model of the rate of chemical reaction was developed to simulate the concentration versus time trajectories of the prominent species in the system in parallel with previous thermodynamic and kinetics investigations on related systems. The simulations were performed by employing the COMSOL Reaction Engineering Lab Module to find numerical solutions for the model equations. The reaction scheme consists of eight principal reactions: three d

Experimental method to measure the effect of charge on bimolecular collision rates in electrolyte solutions.

A stable, monoprotic nitroxide spin probe is utilized as a model to study molecular collisions in aqueous electrolyte solutions. The rate constants of bimolecular collisions, K(col) for 2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidin-1-oxyl-3-carboxylic acid (CP) when it is uncharged (at low pH) and K(col)⁻ when it is charged (CP⁻; at high pH), are measured as functions of temperature and ionic strength. The ratio f* ≡ K(col)⁻/K(col) is a direct measure of the effect of charge on the collision rate. Neglecting the small differences in size and diffusion coefficients of CP and CP⁻, f* is the fractional change in

[Water-electrolyte abnormalities during pregnancy: maternal and fetal complications (about a case)].

Water-electrolyte abnormalities while pregnancy or for infant are very serious. We present a case of a woman at 26 weeks who had gestation pernicious vomiting that led to major extracellular dehydration, water intoxication and acute renal insufficiency. The etiology was a volvulus on common mesentery. Hyperemesis disappeared thanks to surgical treatment. The mother and her fetus would later present serious complications due to the water-electrolyte imbalance correction. The fetus suffered from cerebral hemorrhage and subdural hematoma subordinate to brain edema resorption. The mother presented

Requirements for a high rate of potassium excretion in rats consuming a low electrolyte diet.

Control mechanisms for potassium (K(+)) excretion in humans developed in Palaeolithic times when diets were sodium poor and episodically K(+) rich. Nevertheless, our understanding of the regulation of K(+) excretion comes from experiments in rats with large sodium and K(+) intakes. Our objective was to identify how K(+) excretion was regulated when rats consumed a low NaCl diet to reflect Palaeolithic conditions. Rats that were given mineralocorticoids plus either NaCl, mannitol, or NaHCO(3) had a small kaliuresis. In contrast, KCl load induced a large kaliuresis and a near-maximal luminal [K(

Use of carbon stable isotope to investigate chloromethane formation in the electrolytic dechlorination of trichloroethylene.

Carbon stable isotope trichloroethylene ((13)C TCE) was used to investigate the formation of chloromethane (CM) during the electrolytic dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) at a granular-graphite packed cathode. A method was developed to use a conventional GC/MS to analyze and quantify regular and (13)C TCE and their dechlorination products. The concentration of a (13)C compound can be calculated, based on the concentration of its regular counterpart, from the response ratio of two fragments of different mass per charge values from the compounds in a sample and two characteristic MS spect
