BACKGROUND: SURF1 deficiency, a monogenic mitochondrial disorder, is the most frequent cause of cytochrome c oxidase (COX) deficient Leigh syndrome (LS). We report the first natural history study of SURF1 deficiency.

Most of what we know about cortical map development and plasticity comes from studies in mice and rats, and for the somatosensory cortex, almost exclusively from the whisker-dominated posteromedial barrel fields. Whiskers are the main effector organs of mice and rats, and their representation in cortex and subcortical pathways is a highly derived feature of murine rodents. This specialized anatomical organization may therefore not be representative of somatosensory cortex in general, especially for species that utilize other body parts as their main effector organs, like the hands of primates.

We identified a double mutation in a patient with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia, located in the tRNA(Ala) (m.5628T>C) and tRNA(Lys) (m.8348A>G) genes. OBJECTIVE: To sequence and analyze the complete nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial genome of Oncomelania hupensis.
METHODS: Four long fragments were amplified by long PCR using the primers designed based on mtDNA-CO I, Cytb, 16S rRNA and CO III gene sequences, and sequenced by conserved primer-walking.

Mucosal leishmaniasis, which is a sporadic disease in the Sudan, was shown by isoenzyme characterization and PCR to be caused by Leishmania donovani. However, it was not clear if the parasite was exactly the same strain as that causing visceral leishmaniasis (VL), or of a different strain. The 24 kDa CyoA soluble domain of Vitreoscilla cytochrome bo quinol oxidase, which pumps out Na(+) during respiration, has been crystallized from a solution of 2 M ammonium sulfate and 5% 2-propanol. The crystal belongs to cubic space group P4(3)32, with unit-cell parameters a = b = c = 122.2 A, alpha = beta = gamma = 90 degrees and one subunit in the asymmetric unit. A 99.8% complete data set to 3.3 A has been collected at the 17-ID beamline of the Advanced Photon Source. The structure was determined by molecular replacement and refinement is in progress.

We report a case of a mitochondrial cytopathy (MERRF) with a late diagnosis because of the absence of Ragged-Red Fibers (RRF) in the first muscular biopsy performed in childhood. Three cases of cysticercosis in black bears (Ursus americanus) in three northern California counties between 1990 and 1994 have been identified as due to the tapeworm Taenia solium. We report on a boy who developed proximal renal tubular acidosis with loss of carnitine at the age of about 6 months.
