Distribution and evolution of the Anopheles punctulatus group (Diptera: Culicidae) in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The members of the Anopheles punctulatus group are major vectors of malaria and Bancroftian filariasis in the southwest Pacific region. The group is comprised of 12 cryptic species that require DNA-based tools for species identification. From 1984 to 1998 surveys were carried out in northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and on islands in the southwest Pacific to determine the distribution of the A. punctulatus group. The results of these surveys have now been completed and have generated distribution data from more than 1500 localities through this region. Within this region several climatic an

Transmission dynamics of lymphatic filariasis: density-dependence in the uptake of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae by vector mosquitoes.

Gaining a better understanding of parasite infection dynamics in the vector mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) population is central to improving knowledge regarding the transmission, persistence and hence control of lymphatic filariasis. Here, we use data on mosquito feeding experiments collated from the published literature to examine the available evidence regarding the functional form of the first component of this parasite-vector relationship for Wuchereria bancrofti (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) causing Bancroftian filariasis, i.e. the rate of microfilariae (mf) uptake from the blood of infect

Placebo-controlled community trial of four cycles of single-dose diethylcarbamazine or ivermectin against Wuchereria bancrofti infection and transmission in India.

A double-blind placebo-controlled trial was carried out in 1994-98 to compare the effects of 4 cycles of single-dose diethylcarbamazine (DEC) or ivermectin on prevalence and geometric mean intensity (GMI) of microfilaraemia in the human population, infection rates in the vector population, and transmission intensity of Culex-transmitted Wuchereria bancrofti in rural areas in Tamil Nadu state, south India. Fifteen villages (population approximately 26,800) were included in the study: 5 villages each were randomly assigned to community-wide treatment with DEC or ivermectin or placebo. People ove

Elimination of bancroftian filariasis (Wuchereria bancrofti) in Santa Catarina state, Brazil.

During the 1950s, three foci of Wuchereria bancrofti transmission were identified in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. In Florianópolis, São José da Ponta Grossa and Barra da Laguna community treatment of bancroftian filariasis with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) was performed using two distinct approaches, without vector control or improvements in sanitation. In two of the three communities only microfilaraemic individuals were treated, while in Barra da Laguna the entire population received DEC treatment regardless of their infection status. In both cases, transmission of the parasite was block

Immunoglobulin allotypes among the Bicolanos of Sorsogon province, Luzon, Philippines: implications of phenotypes for filariasis.

BACKGROUND: Compensatory hyperhidrosis (CH) is a common consequence of sympathectomy, which can adversely affect patients' quality of life after surgery. Understanding the factors that influence the occurrence of CH and severe compensatory hyperhidrosis (SCH) is crucial for effective management and counseling of patients undergoing this procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We registered the protocol in International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42024592389) and following PRISMA guidelines. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases for studies published up to Sept

The association between microfilaraemia and disease in lymphatic filariasis.

A standard tenet in the epidemiology of lymphatic filariasis is that patent infection is negatively related to chronic disease. We examine the empirical evidence for this relation by using published data from field studies carried out in a variety of bancroftian filariasis endemic areas. Meta-analysis of the individual study results for each disease category of hydrocele in males only, lymphoedema only, and both conditions combined (total chronic disease) indicate, contrary to expectation, no evidence for a negative association between infection and disease. Indeed, the trend of the empirical

[Epidemiological trend in late stage of control in Malayan filariasis endemic areas with Anopheles anthropophagus as main vector].

During 1982-1990, a longitudinal observation on prevalence trend of malayan filariasis has been made in endemic areas with An. anthropophagus as the main vector. A total of 22,795 person-times of blood examination were made, and 30,439 An. anthropophagus and 10,061 An. sinensis were dissected respectively. The microfilaraemia rate dropped from 1.0% to 0.14%, and the infection rate of An. anthropophagus decreased from 0.74% to 0.09% in 3 endemic villages, while no positive case or infected vector occurred in 5 villages where microfilaraemia cases were absent since the beginning of the study. Effect of CGP 20376 on Brugia malayi and parasite antigenemia in jirds.

This study was designed to investigate the activity of CGP 20376, a benzothiazole derivative, against Brugia malayi in jirds and to illustrate the utility of parasite antigen detection as a means of monitoring drug efficacy in filariasis. Drug treatment was 100% effective in jirds treated 3 or 24 days after infection. Microfilaria and adult worm counts were reduced (relative to counts in sham-treated control animals) by 96% and 95%, respectively, in animals treated 153 days after infection. Four of 6 animals in this treatment group cleared their microfilaremias and were free of adult worms 5 m

[The treatment of microfilaremia due to Wuchereria bancrofti var. pacifica: ivermectin versus diethylcarbamazine].

In October 1989, a controlled, double-blind parallel group trial was implemented to compare both efficacy and tolerability of single doses of ivermectin and diethylcarbamazine (DEC). Fifty eight apparently healthy Wuchereria bancrofti carriers were hospitalized and randomly allocated to treatment with ivermectin 100 mcg/kg, DEC 3 or 6 mg/kg. Six months later, half of those initially treated with ivermectin 100 mcg/kg and DEC 3 mg/kg were given a second similar dose while the rest were given a placebo. After initial treatment, clearance of microfilaremia was complete in 22 of the 23 carriers tr

A single diethylcarbamazine dose for treatment of Wuchereria bancrofti carriers in French Polynesia: efficacy and side effects.

In the fall of 1988, 14 Tahitian Wuchereria bancrofti carriers were treated by a single diethylcarbamazine (DEC) 3 mg/kg dose. Determination of blood microfilarial (mf) density was carried out on days 0, 7, 14, 30, 90 and 180 using the membrane filtration technique. Clinical signs and side effects were noted during the 3 days following treatment. Complete clearance of microfilaremia was observed in two carriers (negativation rate 14%). A decrease of mf density was noted in all of the 14 carriers, ranging from 35.2 to 99.2% (median 78.75%). The percentage decrease in mf density, determined for

Natural infections of Wuchereria bancrofti in Aedes (Stegomyia) polynesiensis and Aedes (Finlaya) samoanus in Samoa.

Seven years after the 2nd mass treatment of the population with diethylcarbamazine, transmission of subperiodic Wuchereria bancrofti was studied in four villages in Samoa during one year by means of biting catches of Aedes polynesiensis and A. samoanus. 2 villages were coastal, one inland bush and the other an inland coconut plantation community. Overall infection and infective rates from 6702 Ae. polynesiensis were 0.84 and 0.27% respectively, and the infection rate from 2858 Ae. samoanus, collected in 10-minute catches from 24 sites, was 0.65%. No infective Ae. samoanus was found in these sa

A monoclonal antibody-based enzyme immunoassay for detecting parasite antigenemia in bancroftian filariasis.

We evaluated a monoclonal antibody-based enzyme immunoassay for detecting soluble parasite antigen in sera collected in an area in South India endemic for Wuchereria bancrofti. Filarial antigen was detected in sera from 56 of 57 microfilaremic patients, 9 of 64 aminofilaremic patients with clinical filariasis, and 11 of 70 endemic controls. Antigen was not detected in sera from patients from nonendemic areas who had a variety of other filarial and nonfilarial helminth infections. Parasite antigen titers were significantly correlated with microfilarial counts in night blood smears (r = .64, P l
