Emotion dysregulation and negative affect: association with psychiatric symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of research focuses on the development and correlates of emotion dysregulation, or deficits in the ability to regulate intense and shifting emotional states. Current models of psychopathology have incorporated the construct of emotion dysregulation, suggesting its unique and interactive contributions, along with childhood disruptive experiences and negative affect, in producing symptomatic distress. Some researchers have suggested that emotion dysregulation is simply a variant of high negative affect. The aim of this study was to assess the construct and incremental v

Evaluation of Cancer Survivors' Experience of Using AI-Based Conversational Tools: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivorship is a complicated, chronic, and long-lasting experience, causing uncertainty and a wide range of physical and emotional health concerns. Due to the complexity of cancer, patients often seek out multiple sources of health information to better understand the aspects of their cancer diagnosis. The high variability among patients with cancer presents significant challenges in treatment, prognosis, and overall disease management. Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots can further personalize cancer care delivery. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding cancer surv

Working life experiences of people who stutter in Finland: Recommendations for enhancing inclusive communication at work.

PURPOSE: People who stutter (PWS) face public stigma, characterized by negative societal beliefs and stereotypes. Due to lack of awareness, PWS may be perceived as inferior and less intelligent, capable, and social, affecting their psychological well-being. While some aspects of the impact of stuttering-such as income, role entrapment, and discrimination-have been explored in previous research, less is known about the deeper personal experiences of PWS in working life. This study highlights the workplace experiences of PWS, their personal aspirations, and ideas for improvement. By understandin

Beyond neuropsychological tests: AI speech analysis in PKU.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare inherited metabolic disorder characterized by toxic phenylalanine (Phe) concentrations in blood and brain. State-of-the-art analyses of speech detected a dimension of verbal discourse providing insights that extend beyond those captured by existing paradigms to measure performance associated with biochemical markers in PKU. The Cookie Theft Picture Task provided a standardized stimulus for eliciting spontaneous speech from 42 adults with PKU and 41 adults without PKU. Subtests measuring language and memory from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Editio

From prodromal stages to clinical trials: The promise of digital speech biomarkers in Parkinson's disease.

Speech impairment is a common and disabling symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), affecting communication and quality of life. Advances in digital speech processing and artificial intelligence have revolutionized objective speech analysis. Given the complex nature of speech impairment, acoustic speech analysis offers unique biomarkers for neuroprotective treatments from the prodromal stages of PD. Digital speech biomarkers can monitor levodopa-induced motor complications, detect the effects of deep brain stimulation, and provide feedback for behavioral speech therapy. This review updates the me

The effect of a single dose of methylphenidate on attention in children and adolescents with ADHD and comorbid Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

The co-occurrence Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) in children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been associated to difficulties in regulating adverse states, elevated functional impairment, deficits in Executive Functions and high risk for psychopathology. Recent studies have shown that ODD is a negative predictor of a positive response to methylphenidate (MPH) treatment for ADHD symptoms in children and adolescents and that patients with a diagnosis of comorbid ADHD and ODD are less likely to respond favorably to pharmacological treatment with MPH. Evaluation of mental disorder with prioritization of its type by utilizing the bipolar complex fuzzy decision-making approach based on Schweizer-Sklar prioritized aggregation operators.

A clinically important loss in a person's understanding, emotive power, or conduct is a symptom of a mental disorder. It generally occurs for genetic, psychological, and/or cognitive reasons and is accompanied by discomfort or limitationin significant functional areas. It can be handled using techniques similar to those used to treat chronic conditions (i.e., precautions, examination, medication, and recovery). Mental diseases take a variety of forms. Mental disorder is also identified as mental illness. The latter is a more usual phrase that incorporates psychological problems, psychosocial d

Comprehensive comparison of social cognitive performance in autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) are separate neurodevelopmental disorders that are both characterized by difficulties in social cognition and social functioning. Due to methodological confounds, the degree of similarity in social cognitive impairments across these two disorders is currently unknown. This study therefore conducted a comprehensive comparison of social cognitive ability in ASD and SCZ to aid efforts to develop optimized treatment programs. METHODS: In total, 101 individuals with ASD, 92 individuals with SCZ or schizoaffective disorder, and 101

Influence of Repaired Cleft Lip and Palate on Layperson Perception following Orthognathic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Facial scarring and disharmony caused by clefting are associated with psychosocial stress, which may be improved by orthognathic surgery. The authors examine how clefting influences change in layperson perception of a patient following orthognathic surgery. METHODS: One thousand laypersons were recruited through Mechanical Turk to evaluate patient photographs before and after orthognathic surgery. Nineteen patients-five with unilateral and five with bilateral clefting-were included. Respondents assessed six personality traits, six emotional expressions, and likelihood of seven int

Emanuel Miller lecture: confusions and controversies about Asperger syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hans Asperger drew attention to individuals who show the core symptoms of autism in the presence of high verbal intelligence. METHODS: A review of the literature explores current issues concerning the diagnosis and nature of Asperger syndrome. RESULTS: The behavioural and neurophysiological evidence to date suggests that Asperger syndrome is a variant of autism typically occurring in high-functioning individuals, and not a separate disorder. One of the problems of diagnosis is that the typical impairment of social communication may be difficult to identify in early childhood, and

Utilizing Artificial Intelligence in Personal Health Contexts: Investigating Information Seeking Motivations, Information Processing Behaviors, and Behavioral Responses During and After Interaction with GenAI.

Following the advent of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), seeking health information on GenAI has become a more common and flexible approach. However, laypeople's health information seeking and processing (HISP) motivations and behavior on GenAI platforms remain underexplored, particularly given the current shift from search-based activities to more interactive and conversational processes. This study addressed this gap by exploring laypeople's HISP motivations, behaviors, and behavioral responses during and after interaction with GenAI. Using the risk information seeking and process

A vision-based MobileNet-GRU framework for continuous monitoring of student engagement and emotional states.

Student engagement and emotional state monitoring remains a major challenge in modern education, particularly in online learning environments where direct instructor supervision is limited. Conventional evaluation approaches, such as surveys, quizzes, and feedback forms, rely heavily on subjective judgment and often fail to capture the dynamic temporal patterns of learner attention and behavioral engagement patterns. To address this limitation, this study proposes a vision-based framework that integrates efficient spatial feature extraction with temporal sequence modeling for continuous engage

Medical School Admissions: Focusing on Producing a Physician Workforce That Addresses the Needs of the United States.

The aging population, burnout, and earlier retirement of physicians along with the static number of training positions are likely to worsen the current physician shortage. There is an urgent need to transform the process for selecting medical students. In this Invited Commentary, the authors suggest that to build the physician workforce that the United States needs for the future, academic medicine should focus on building capacity in 3 overarching areas. First, medical schools need to develop a more diverse pool of capable applicants that better matches the demographic characteristics of heal

Assessment of Thoracic Pain Using Machine Learning: A Case Study from Baja California, Mexico.

Thoracic pain is a shared symptom among gastrointestinal diseases, muscle pain, emotional disorders, and the most deadly: Cardiovascular diseases. Due to the limited space in the emergency department, it is important to identify when thoracic pain is of cardiac origin, since being a symptom of CVD (Cardiovascular Disease), the attention to the patient must be immediate to prevent irreversible injuries or even death. Artificial intelligence contributes to the early detection of pathologies, such as chest pain. In this study, the machine learning techniques were used, performing an analysis of 2

Executive function and brain development in adolescents with severe congenital heart disease (Teen Heart Study): protocol of a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most frequent congenital malformation. With recent advances in medical care, the majority of patients with CHD survive into adulthood. As a result, interest has shifted towards the neurodevelopmental outcome of these patients, and particularly towards the early detection and treatment of developmental problems. A variety of mild to moderate cognitive impairments as well as emotional and behavioural problems has been observed in this population. However, a more detailed assessment of the various domains of executive function and their associat

Reduced optimism and a heightened neural response to everyday worries are specific to generalized anxiety disorder, and not seen in social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are co-morbid and associated with similar neural disruptions during emotion regulation. In contrast, the lack of optimism examined here may be specific to GAD and could prove an important biomarker for that disorder. METHOD: Unmedicated individuals with GAD (n = 18) and age-, intelligence quotient- and gender-matched SAD (n = 18) and healthy (n = 18) comparison individuals were scanned while contemplating likelihoods of high- and low-impact negative (e.g. heart attack; heartburn) or positive (e.g. winning lottery
