Quantum well-inspired energy level design in multicomponent organic solar cells for improved energy loss management.

The power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs) has significantly improved since PM6:Y6 was introduced. However, the persistently inadequate energy loss management would constrain further advances towards >21% efficiency devices. Based on spin statistics, bimolecular recombination predominantly generates triplet-character intermediate states, which commonly undergo back charge transfer (BCT) followed by localized triplet formation and non-radiative decay, resulting in significant energy losses. Here, we introduced a strategy based on partial quantum confinement effects (PQCEs) th

Tunable thermoresponsive hydrogels for temperature regulation and warning in fruit and vegetables preservation.

Fresh fruit and vegetables usually suffer from quality deterioration when exposed to inappropriate temperatures. Common energy-input temperature regulation is widely applied but there remain challenges of increasing energy consumption. Passive temperature management regulates the heat transfer without energy consumption, showing a sustainable strategy for food preservation. Here, thermoresponsive hydrogels were constructed by incorporating NaCl and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles into a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-co-AM)) network. Due to the excellent mechanical pr

Theoretical Study on the Solvent-Dependent Optical Properties of 2-Aryl-3H-1,3-benzazaphosphole Oxide.

Photoresponsive molecules that respond to the surrounding environment are expected to be utilized as optical functional materials, such as sensors. Recently reported 2-aryl-3H-1,3-benzazaphosphole oxide with a diphenylamino group (ABPO) is one such molecule having interesting solvent-dependent properties. The absorption spectra of ABPO in nonpolar and polar solvents are almost identical in shape and excitation energy, whereas the fluorescence spectrum is red-shifted as the solvent polarity increases. In addition, the fluorescence quantum yield drastically decreases in methanol and acetonitrile

Aggregation-induced effects on the ion-molecule reactivity of protonated acetic acid clusters toward methylamine.

Non-covalent interactions within molecular aggregates are expected to influence ion-molecule reactivity, yet systematic experimental investigations remain challenging because of the difficulty of producing, selecting, and reacting isolated clusters of well-defined size. Here, we combine molecular-beam cluster production, synchrotron vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization, tandem mass spectrometry, and density functional theory calculations to investigate the reactions of size-selected protonated acetic acid clusters (AcxH+, x = 2-5) with methylamine. Protonated clusters are formed by dissoci

Artificial light harvesting system of CM6@Zn-MOF nanosheets with highly enhanced photoelectric performance.

As donors for effective energy transfer, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted the attention of many experts in the field of artificial light-harvesting materials. This study introduces a novel two-dimensional Zn-MOF, synthesized using flexible 1,3-phenyldiacetic acid (H2mpda) and rigid 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene (tib) as organic ligands. Through atomic force microscopy (AFM), we have determined the monolayer thickness of this novel material to be 5 nm. Achieving two-dimensional Zn-MOF nanosheets with large BET surface area was made possible by employing ultrasonic stripping tech…

Scalable and adaptable two-ligand co-solvent transfer methodology for gold bipyramids to organic solvents.

Large and faceted nanoparticles, such as gold bipyramids, presently require synthesis using alkyl ammonium halide ligands in aqueous conditions to stabilize the structure, which impedes subsequent transfer and suspension of such nanoparticles in low polarity solvents despite success with few nanometer gold nanoparticles of shapes such as spheres. Phase transfer methodologies present a feasible avenue to maintain colloidal stability of suspensions and move high surface energy particles into organic solvent environments. Here, we present a method to yield stable suspensions of gold bipyramids in

Structural Quality Factor of Flo-TENG under Stochastic Wave Excitation.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have recently emerged as a promising technology for efficient water wave energy harvesting. However, there is a paucity of clear guidance regarding the optimal designs of TENGs and their shells to achieve efficient absorption and conversion of water wave energy in real random waves. Herein, from the perspective of wave-body interaction and energy transfer, this paper proposes a structural quality factor (Qunit) for the quantitative evaluation of both the motion of floating triboelectric nanogenerator (Flo-TENG) shells and their capability to absorb and conv…

Detection of toxic mercury ions using a ratiometric CdSe/ZnS nanocrystal sensor.

We have developed a strategy for the ratiometric detection of toxic Hg(2+) ions using a semiconductor nanocrystal energy-transfer donor coupled to a mercury-sensitive "turn-on" dye acceptor. The results demonstrate a new paradigm of toxic metal sensing that resolves the difficulties with the use of semiconductor nanotechnology for this purpose.

Screening of a glycopolymer library for GM1 mimetics synthesized by the "carbohydrate module method".

The "carbohydrate module method" is a promising approach for oligosaccharide mimetics using polymeric materials. However, it is difficult to predict the optimal structure for a particular oligosaccharide mimetic, and an efficient strategy for the synthesis and evaluation of glycopolymers is desirable. In this study, a screening of glycopolymers for the "carbohydrate module method" by a combination of photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRI) is demonstrated. The facile and fast s…

Generation of Halomethyl Radicals by Halogen Atom Abstraction and Their Addition Reactions with Alkenes.

α-Aminoradicals undergo halogen atom abstraction to form halomethyl radicals in reactions initiated by the combination of tert-butyl hydroperoxide, aliphatic trialkylamine, halocarbon, and copper(I) iodide. The formation of the α-aminoradical circumvents preferential hydrogen atom transfer in favor of halogen atom transfer, thereby releasing the halomethyl radical for addition to alkenes. The resulting radical addition products add the tert-butylperoxy group to form α-peroxy-β,β-dichloropropylbenzene products that are convertible to their corresponding β,β-dichloro-alcohols and to novel pyridi

Evidence for a sensitising pigment in fly photoreceptors.

Many photoreceptor cells in invertebrates have a dual-peak spectral sensitivity. Evidence is presented that in fly photoreceptors the ultraviolet peak is due to a photostable pigment that absorbs light quanta and transfers the energy to the blue-absorbing visual pigment.

Evaluation of the photosensitizer activity of hydrophobic phosphorus(V)porphyrins using the absorption spectral change of 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide.

Under visible light irradiation, water-insoluble P(V)porphyrins oxidized 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNADH), a model compound for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, and diminished the typical absorption of BNADH at around 340 nm. A singlet oxygen quencher, sodium azide, partially inhibited photosensitized BNADH oxidation. This BNADH oxidation photosensitized by P(V)porphyrins in the presence of sodium azide can be explained by electron transfer oxidation from BNADH to the photoexcited P(V)porphyrins. The quantum yields of BNADH oxidation via electron transfer by these P(V)porphyrins were

Interfacial electric polarization in biohybrid catalysis.

Biohybrid catalysis, which couples renewable energy conversion with biological metabolism, offers a promising route for the sustainable production of value-added chemicals and fuels. However, the physicochemical principles governing electron transfer and energetic coupling across microbe-material interfaces remain poorly understood, partly because interfacial charge redistribution and local electric fields that shape electron-transfer energetics are difficult to characterize and quantify. Here, we propose interfacial electric polarization as a conceptual framework for understanding how localiz

Unraveling the phase-dependent ESPT pathways in multi-channel PiQ molecule: insights from TDDFT calculations.

The excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) behavior of the PiQ molecule was systematically investigated in both liquid and solid phases. The asymmetric molecular structure and intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions were analyzed through geometry optimization, potential energy surface calculations, and frontier molecular orbitals analysis. It was demonstrated that in the liquid phase, PiQ undergoes a concerted excited-state intramolecular double proton transfer (ESDPT), resulting in green fluorescence at 510 nm. In contrast, in the solid phase, only the initial excited-state intramolecular

Charge-Transfer States Enable Spin-Selective Formation of Quartet State Qudits in Luminescent Radical-Chromophore Dyads.

Luminescent tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl (TTM) radicals are promising doublet emitters that have been used to generate spin-optical interfaces in molecular electron spin qudits. In particular, photoexcitation of covalent TTM-chromophore dyads can generate quartet spin states that can be detected via photoluminescence. However, the mechanism of quartet spin initialization is complicated by competing charge-transfer (CT) and energy-transfer (EnT) pathways between the radical and the chromophore. Here, we demonstrate the role of CT intermediates by engineering a covalent dyad of TTM and naph
