AIM: To evaluate the presentation and course of acute postinfectious glomerulonephritis (APGN), which has increased dramatically in Armenia after serious deterioration in the living conditions.
STUDY DESIGN: Observational study, based on case notes, of a large homogeneous group of patients hospitalised for APGN at one centre over a five year period (1992-6).
PATIENTS: 474 patients aged < 16 years with a diagnosis of APGN.

PURPOSE: To define uveitis associated with leptospirosis in a clinical setting.
METHODS: We present the clinical features of 73 consecutive cases of uveitis linked clinically to an outbreak of systemic leptospirosis in patients with antibodies to Leptospira species who were examined from January to September 1994.

CONCLUSIONS: The trigger for nonsexually transmitted gonococcal conjunctivitis epidemics remains obscure. Age is a significant risk factor and social and ecological factors may also contribute. In an epidemic of varicella investigated in rural southern India, an overall attack rate of 5.9% was observed. Attack rates were 15.9% among under-fives, 11.1% among school children (5-15 years) and 24% among those 16 years and more. The coxsackievirus A24 variant was implicated in four of six major acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis outbreaks in Singapore since its discovery in 1970. Hela cell suspension in 24-well flat-bottom tissue culture plates was a satisfactory alternative to monolayer cells grown in test tubes for virus isolation. Respiratory illness occurred in 20 of 98 patients with acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis. Apart from conjunctival secretions, respiratory and oral transmission of coxsackievirus A24 variant would explain the rapid and extensive spread of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis during an outbreak.

Of these refugees 159 men and 167 women arrived from the German concentration camps in Ravensbrück, Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, Neuengamme and others. The possibility of micro-epidemics of severe leptospirosis occurring on the island of Barbados was investigated by examining the space-time clustering of the disease in 212 laboratory-confirmed cases admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Bridgetown, over a 7-year period.
