Canine flank alopecia: A narrative review of clinical presentation, genetic basis, and therapeutic management.

Canine flank alopecia (CFA) is a seasonally recurrent skin disorder with a strong breed predisposition. Affected dogs display non-inflammatory, often hyperpigmented, well-circumscribed, symmetrical patches of hair loss, typically located on the thoracolumbar flanks. The onset of hair loss occurs during periods of decreasing daylight, usually in autumn or winter, with spontaneous partial or complete regrowth of hair during the following spring or summer. CFA is not associated with systemic symptoms and does not compromise the dog's general health. While the disorder is primarily considered a co

Effectiveness of natural predators, microbial bioinsecticides, and plant-based bioinsecticides to reduce mosquito-borne disease burden: a systematic review.

Mosquito-borne diseases are a major public health burden given the limited pharmacological options. While the adverse effects of synthetic insecticides are well documented, it is necessary to assess whether environmentally friendly interventions are effective for disease control. Although natural predators, microbial bioinsecticides and plant-based bioinsecticides have gained attention for their specificity and reduced environmental impact, no comprehensive synthesis of evidence on their effectiveness in reducing disease burden has been conducted, highlighting the need for this review. A PRISM

Evaluating the Predictive Performance of Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate Equations for Acute Kidney Injury Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is widely used worldwide to treat the growing incidence of coronary artery disease due to population growth and aging. However, postoperative complications, especially acute kidney injury, are a major concern affecting patient outcomes. We aimed to evaluate different estimated glomerular filtration rate calculation methods to predict postoperative acute kidney injury after CABG, highlighting their importance in assessing surgical risk and renal function preoperatively. DESIGN: Retrospective data collection followed by calculation and comparis

A Comprehensive Review of Epidemiology, Environmental Factors, and Control Strategies for Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Iran: Challenges and Prospects.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) remains a significant public health challenge in Iran, which reported an incidence rate of 15.8 cases per 100,000 individuals in 2019. Among the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region, Iran bears a disproportionate burden of this neglected tropical disease, with 18 out of its 31 provinces affected. ZCL is especially prevalent in rural and semiurban areas, where ecological and environmental factors create suitable conditions for disease transmission. Rodent reservoirs, particularly Meriones species, and specific vectors, such as Phlebotomus sandflie

Synergistic modeling of hemorrhagic dengue fever: Passive immunity dynamics and time-delay neural network analysis.

Dengue fever poses a formidable epidemiological challenge, particularly for vulnerable groups such as infants. This research paper establishes a mathematical model to describe the dynamics of secondary immunity in infants against dengue hemorrhagic fever, who acquired primary immunity through maternal antibodies. The effect of passive immunity in the form of dengue immunoglobulin is analyzed for high-risk patients for different scenarios, including standard dengue infections, host with pre-existing immunity, delayed diagnosis or treatment, and end-stage dengue cases. Convergence analysis of th

Characterizing mechanism-based pain phenotypes in patients with chronic pancreatitis: a cross-sectional analysis of the PROspective Evaluation of Chronic Pancreatitis for EpidEmiologic and Translational StuDies.

Pain is common in chronic pancreatitis (CP) and profoundly reduces quality of life (QoL). Multiple underlying mechanisms contribute to a heterogenous pain experience and reduce efficacy of pain management. This study was designed to characterize the distribution of mechanism-based pain phenotypes in painful CP. The data analyzed were collected as part of the PROspective Evaluation of Chronic Pancreatitis for EpidEmiologic and Translational StuDies, an NCI/NIDDK-funded longitudinal study of the natural history of CP. The PROspective Evaluation of Chronic pancreatitis for EpidEmiologic and trans

Optimization and Evaluation of a Multiplex Quantitative PCR Assay for Detection of Nucleic Acids in Human Blood Samples from Patients with Spotted Fever Rickettsiosis, Typhus Rickettsiosis, Scrub Typhus, Monocytic Ehrlichiosis, and Granulocytic Anaplasmosis.

Spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFGR), typhus group rickettsioses (TGR), scrub typhus (caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi), ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis often present as undifferentiated fever but are not treated by agents (penicillins and cephalosporins) typically used for acute febrile illness. Inability to diagnose these infections when the patient is acutely ill leads to excess morbidity and mortality. Failure to confirm these infections retrospectively if a convalescent blood sample is not obtained also impairs epidemiologic and clinical research. We designed a multiplex real-time quan

Clinical perspective on oxidative stress in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is one of the most devastating neurological diseases; most patients die within 3 to 4 years after symptom onset. Oxidative stress is a disturbance in the pro-oxidative/antioxidative balance favoring the pro-oxidative state. Autopsy and laboratory studies in ALS indicate that oxidative stress plays a major role in motor neuron degeneration and astrocyte dysfunction. Oxidative stress biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid, plasma, and urine are elevated, suggesting that abnormal oxidative stress is generated outside of the central nervous system. Our revie

A five year surveillance report on PFGE types of Listeria monocytogenes isolated in Italy from food and food related environments.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe invasive disease in humans and has been isolated from a variety of foods. This study aimed to investigate type diversity and distribution across sources by subtyping via PFGE a set of 300 L. monocytogenes isolates collected in Italy from foods over a five year period (from 2003 to 2007). The most frequent serotypes were 1/2a (45%), 1/2c (22%), and 4b/4e (16%); 5% of the isolates were untypeable by conventional serotyping. Significant associations were observed between serotype 1/2a with dairy (O.R.=13.9) and 1/2c with meat (O.R.=33.3). All isolates were

The neonatal "sepsis work-up": personal reflections on the development of an evidence-based approach toward newborn infections in a managed care organization.

"Rule out sepsis" may be the most common discharge diagnosis among infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. Although the frequency of sepsis, meningitis, and other confirmed bacterial infections has remained constant (between 1 and 5/1000 live births) for many years, the number of infants evaluated and treated is much higher. Each year in the United States, as many as 600 000 infants experience at least one evaluation for suspected bacterial infection during the birth hospitalization. The number treated is estimated at 130 000 to 400 000 per year. Despite massive overtreatment, de

Study protocol for development of an options assessment toolkit (OAT) for national malaria programs in Asia Pacific to determine best combinations of vivax radical cure for their given contexts.

INTRODUCTION: Recent advances in G6PD deficiency screening and treatment are rapidly changing the landscape of radical cure of vivax malaria available for National Malaria Programs (NMPs). While NMPs await the WHO's global policy guidance on these advances, they will also need to consider different contextual factors related to the vivax burden, health system capacity, and resources available to support changes to their policies and practices. Therefore, we aim to develop an Options Assessment Toolkit (OAT) that enables NMPs to systematically determine optimal radical cure options for their gi

Generating Trust in Participatory Research on Plasmodium knowlesi Malaria: A Study with Rural Community Gatekeepers during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium knowlesi malaria is a zoonotic infection that affects rural communities in South East Asia. Although the epidemiology of the disease has been extensively researched, the voices of individuals within affected communities often go unheard. Here, we describe a study that explores the importance of gatekeepers in conducting research among rural communities, their perspectives on the challenges encountered when attempting to avoid malaria infection, and their views on participatory research. METHODS: Between 1 November 2021 and 28 February 2022, we conducted a study in Kudat
