On the critical behaviour of simple epidemics.

We show how ideas and models which were originally introduced to gain an understanding of critical phenomena can be used to interpret the dynamics of epidemics of communicable disease in real populations. Specifically, we present an analysis of the dynamics of disease outbreaks for three common communicable infections from a small isolated island population. The strongly fluctuating nature of the temporal incidence of disease is captured by the model, and comparisons between exponents calculated from the data and from simulations are made. A forest-fire model with sparks is used to classify th

Genetic-environmental interactions in relation to low dose studies: a possible model from breast cancer.

The identification of genetically susceptible individuals may permit the determination of genetic and environmental interactions which result in disease. This paper presents some recent findings on possible genetic-environmental interactions in breast disease as determined by a "nature-nurture" model employing epidemiological risk factors and cytologic studies of breast secretions obtained by nipple aspiration. The findings indicate that severe changes in the cytologic characteristics of the fluid are associated with a positive family history of breast cancer and clinical fibrocystic disease.

External validation of FRISBEE 2-year and 5-year fracture prediction models in a fracture liaison service cohort.

UNLABELLED: We externally validated the FRISBEE models of 2-year and 5-year fracture risk prediction in 517 women with index fractures. Both models overestimated the fracture risk. Recalibration of the FRISBEE models are needed before use in Norwegian women with recent fractures. PURPOSE: We externally validated the Fracture Risk Brussels Epidemiological Enquiry (FRISBEE) groups' 2-year and 5-year fracture risk models. METHODS: We included women above 50 years with a recent fracture from the consent-based part of the Norwegian Capture the Fracture Initiative study (NoFRACT). They had bone mi

Systematic review of transmission factors, management interventions, and elimination techniques related to porcine epidemic diarrhea.

BACKGROUND: Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a highly contagious enteric coronavirus that has caused severe economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. The virus spreads rapidly through fecal-oral transmission and contaminated fomites. Despite extensive research on vaccines, biosecurity, and inactivation strategies, PEDV remains endemic in the US. This systematic review evaluated the key epidemiological factors relevant to the feasibility of regional or national PEDV eradication. METHODS: A systematic review of peer-reviewed literature published since 1990 was conducted with Pub

Computer simulation of Babesia bovis (Babes) and B. bigemina (Smith & Kilborne) transmission by Boophilus cattle ticks (Acari: Ixodidae).

A computer model was developed to simulate the processes involved in transmission of the cattle fever parasites Babesia bovis (Babes) and Babesia bigemina (Smith & Kilborne) between cattle and Boophilus ticks. The model of Babesia transmission was combined with a dynamic life history model for population dynamics of the tick vectors, Boophilus microplus (Canestrini) and B. annulatus (Say). Epidemiological parameters and relationships in the model include the reduction in fecundity of infected ticks, rate of transovarial transmission, effect of cattle type and inoculation rate on infectivity of

Identification of diagnostic biomarkers and dissecting immune microenvironment with crosstalk genes in the POAG and COVID-19 nexus.

An underlying association between primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and COVID-19 has been hypothesized, but the causal link and shared mechanisms remain unclear. This study integrates epidemiological and bioinformatics approaches to investigate their relationship, aiming to identify common molecular pathways and validate clinical correlations. Epidemiological data from 3,015 participants in the CHARLS database were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models to assess the association between COVID-19 and POAG, with stratification by gender, smoking stat

Predicting VO2max Using Lung Function and Three-Dimensional (3D) Allometry Provides New Insights into the Allometric Cascade (M0.75).

BACKGROUND: Using directly measured cardiorespiratory fitness (i.e. VO2max) in epidemiological/population studies is rare due to practicality issues. As such, predicting VO2max is an attractive alternative. Most equations that predict VO2max adopt additive rather than multiplicative models despite evidence that the latter provides superior fits and more biologically interpretable models. Furthermore, incorporating some but not all confounding variables may lead to inflated mass exponents (∝ M0.75) as in the allometric cascade. OBJECTIVE: Hence, the purpose of the current study was to develop

Mathematical modelling and phylodynamics for the study of dog rabies dynamics and control: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a fatal yet vaccine-preventable disease. In the last two decades, domestic dog populations have been shown to constitute the predominant reservoir of rabies in developing countries, causing 99% of human rabies cases. Despite substantial control efforts, dog rabies is still widely endemic and is spreading across previously rabies-free areas. Developing a detailed understanding of dog rabies dynamics and the impact of vaccination is essential to optimize existing control strategies and developing new ones. In this scoping review, we aimed at disentangling the respective con

[Progress of spatial epidemiology applied to prevention and control of schistosomiasis].

Schistosomiasis is one of the key diseases of surveillance and prevention in China. The elimination of schistosomiasis is of great significance to people's health and social economy. With the development of spatial epidemiology, progress has been made in the spatial distribution of schistosomiasis, the prediction of spatial and temporal trends, and analysis of the environmental factors. This paper reviews the application of spatial epidemiology in the control and prevention of schistosomiasis and introduces the spatio-temporal distribution methods, spatial model, and application of remote sens

Deterministic models for the eradication of poliomyelitis: vaccination with the inactivated (IPV) and attenuated (OPV) polio virus vaccine.

Currently two polio vaccines, IPV and OPV, are in use which differ markedly in their epidemiological parameters. A simple epidemiological model in terms of ordinary differential equations is proposed to study the effects of vaccination campaigns using these vaccines. The numbers of interest are the reproduction number of the disease in the presence of vaccination and the critical vaccination coverage necessary to prevent an outbreak. For these numbers explicit representations are determined which can be used in comparing different vaccination strategies.

Mobility-driven synthetic contact matrices as a scalable solution for real-time pandemic response modeling.

Accurately capturing time-varying human behavior remains a major challenge for real-time epidemic modeling and response. During the COVID-19 pandemic, synthetic contact matrices derived from mobility and behavioral data emerged as a scalable alternative to empirical contact surveys, yet their comparative performance remained unclear. Here, we systematically evaluate synthetic and empirical age-stratified contact matrices in France from March 2020 to May 2022, comparing contact patterns and their ability to reproduce observed epidemic dynamics. While both sources captured similar temporal trend

Risk and Spatial Spread of a Measles Outbreak in Texas.

In January 2025, a measles outbreak was reported in Gaines County, Texas, and subsequently spread to other counties and states. However, investigations into the geographic spread of this outbreak remain limited. We developed a measles transmission model parameterized with 2020-2024 measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage and human mobility data in Texas. We conducted sensitivity analyses to evaluate how variation in model parameters affects outcomes. We compared model predictions to data from the 2025 measles outbreak and simulated scenarios for outbreak originating in different low v

Descriptive analysis of national bovine viral diarrhoea test data in England (2016-2023).

BACKGROUND: Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) is an endemic disease in the UK. In England, a voluntary control and eradication scheme, BVDFree England, has been running since 2016. METHODS: We analysed test results from 7005 herds that were submitted to BVDFree England between 2016 and 2023 to investigate changes in the prevalence of BVD in participating herds and engagement by farmers since the previously published analysis covering the period up to 2020. RESULTS: Herds that tested for multiple consecutive years were more likely to be BVD negative in later testing years than when starting. Few h

Modeling the 2022 mpox outbreak with a mechanistic network model.

BACKGROUND: The 2022 outbreak of mpox affected more than 80,000 individuals worldwide, most of whom were gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) who likely contracted the disease through close contact during sex. Given the unprecedented number of mpox infections and the new route of infection, there was substantial uncertainty about how best to manage the outbreak. METHODS: We implemented a dynamic agent-based network model to simulate the spread of mpox in a United States-based GBMSM population. This model allowed us to implement data-informed dynamic network evolution to

Exploring the effects of BCG vaccination in patients diagnosed with tuberculosis: Observational study using the Enhanced Tuberculosis Surveillance system.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is one of the most widely-used vaccines worldwide. BCG primarily reduces the progression from infection to disease, however there is evidence that BCG may provide additional benefits. We aimed to investigate whether there is evidence in routinely-collected surveillance data that BCG vaccination impacts outcomes for tuberculosis (TB) cases in England. METHODS: We obtained all TB notifications for 2009-2015 in England from the Enhanced Tuberculosis surveillance system. We considered five outcomes: All-cause mortality, death due to TB (in those who died

Assessing Strategies Against Gambiense Sleeping Sickness Through Mathematical Modeling.

BACKGROUND: Control of gambiense sleeping sickness relies predominantly on passive and active screening of people, followed by treatment. METHODS: Mathematical modeling explores the potential of 3 complementary interventions in high- and low-transmission settings. RESULTS: Intervention strategies that included vector control are predicted to halt transmission most quickly. Targeted active screening, with better and more focused coverage, and enhanced passive surveillance, with improved access to diagnosis and treatment, are both estimated to avert many new infections but, when used alone, ar

Central nervous system tuberculosis: pathogenesis and clinical aspects.

Tuberculosis of the central nervous system (CNS) is a highly devastating form of tuberculosis, which, even in the setting of appropriate antitubercular therapy, leads to unacceptable levels of morbidity and mortality. Despite the development of promising molecular diagnostic techniques, diagnosis of CNS tuberculosis relies largely on microbiological methods that are insensitive, and as such, CNS tuberculosis remains a formidable diagnostic challenge. Insights into the basic neuropathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the development of an appropriate animal model are desperately needed

Chemicals causing mammary gland tumors in animals signal new directions for epidemiology, chemicals testing, and risk assessment for breast cancer prevention.

Identifying chemical carcinogens in animal studies is currently the primary means of anticipating cancer effects in humans. Animal studies to evaluate potential chemical carcinogenicity are particularly important for breast cancer because environmental and occupational epidemiologic research is sparse. Chemicals that increased mammary gland tumors in animal studies were compiled from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP), and other sources. Summary assessments of the carcinogenic potential for each chemical and potentially exposed po
