PURPOSE: Soft contact lenses with spherical base curves have been used for many years. The computation of the refractive powers of these lenses is easy, requiring only that one uses the lens maker equation for thick lenses. Nevertheless, for customized contact lenses, there is yet no reliable method for measuring the higher order optical aberrations. In this study we have developed in the Center for Visual Sciences of the University of Rochester an optical apparatus that allows for precise measurement of low and high order aberrations of customized soft contact lenses.

Pectus excavatum is the most common chest wall deformity seen in the pediatric population. There have been a number of reports describing the operative correction of pectus excavatum, but scant literature is available describing removal of the substernal bar. This report describes a straightforward technique for removal of the substernal bar after the Nuss operation. This technique has been used in more than 110 patients without complications.

The mechanism of lasing in single cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanowire cavities was elucidated by temperature-dependent and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Temperature-dependent PL studies reveal rich spectral features and show that an exciton-exciton interaction is critical to lasing up to 75 K, while an exciton-phonon process dominates at higher temperatures. Accidental dislodgement of an endoprosthesis into the right cavities or the pulmonary artery is a rarely described complication of percutaneous venous stenting. Subclavian crush syndrome is a well-described cause of pacemaker lead failure resulting from an entrapment of a lead or leads between the clavicle and the first rib. INTRODUCTION: Proper placement is an essential prerequisite for the use of central venous catheters. Our study was undertaken to determine the incidence of aberrant locations dependent on different anatomic approaches for various types of central venous catheters and to elucidate failures and pitfalls of preventive practices.

Hazard evaluation methods for lasers, with wavelengths greater than 1.4 microns (mostly in the middle infrared), have changed significantly in the current version of the American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers, ANSI Z136.1-1993. A correct evaluation involves comparing the hazard potential based on two evaluation models; one based on individual pulses and the other based on an equivalent continuous-wave exposure. An example of the hazard evaluation method within this spectral region is provided.

A 75-year-old male was implanted with a Telectronics Meta DDDR model 1250 pacemaker 47 months ago. Five hundred and sixty-one endocardial pacing leads implanted in the right ventricle of 502 patients between 1971 and 1990 were followed for up to 17 years regarding their complications, stimulation threshold behavior, and overall longevity. Slipped capital femoral epiphyses (SCFE) were created in 10 pair of bovine femurs. Each pair was pinned with a single screw on one side and two screws contralaterally. The specimens were reloaded to failure. Double pin fixation yielded only a 33% increase in stiffness as compared with single pin fixation.
