BACKGROUND: Although the specific relationship between the stress changes in the external fixator during tibial fracture treatment and the bone healing process remains unclear, it is believed that stress variations in the external fixator scaffold can, to a certain extent, reflect the progress of tibial healing.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to propose a non-invasive method for assessing the degree of fracture healing by monitoring the changes in stress transmission, the locations of stress-sensitive points, and displacement in the external fixator-tibia system during the healing process of tibi

PURPOSE: To determine whether volar locking plates (VLP) are superior to external fixation (EF) with adjuvant pins in unstable distal radius fractures after 5 years of follow-up.
METHODS: We randomized 111 unstable distal radius fractures to treatment with either a VLP or EF using adjuvant pins. The patients' mean age was 54 years (range, 20-84 y). Twenty patients were lost to follow-up. At 5 years, 91 patients (82%) were assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS) pain score, Mayo wrist score, Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH) questionnaire, range of motion, and r

Several methods have been reported for treating avian antebrachial fractures, yet the quantitative information regarding their success is limited. This retrospective study applied data from raptors admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation center to provide metrics associated with the treatment of ulna fractures with an intact radius by either conservative management or a single surgical method: a type I external skeletal fixator tied in to an intramedullary pin (ESF IMP tie-in). Postfledging wild raptors with an ulna fracture admitted to The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota College of

An approximately 5-year-old male mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) was presented for assessment and treatment of bilateral mandibular ramal fractures. Physical examination revealed the presence of complete, open mandibular fractures at the rostral third of both mandibles, with ventral displacement of the rostral segments. An initial repair attempt consisted of a suture passed between the proximal and rostral fragments to form a simple interrupted suture on each side, which failed soon after the procedure. The second repair used a 1.1-mm nonthreaded Steinman pin inserted through the fracture si

CASE: A 61-year-old man with a short residual limb after traumatic transfemoral amputation developed progressive ipsilateral hip osteoarthritis with severe pain during prosthetic gait. Intraoperative limb control was challenging because of the absence of a distal lever arm. A temporary circular external fixation system was applied to the proximal femur before preparation, enabling traction and rotation. Total hip arthroplasty was completed successfully. At 1 year postoperatively, the patient demonstrated substantial pain relief and improved prosthetic gait without instability or implant-relate

Three animals (1 dog and 2 cats), all weighing < 3 kg and aged 4 to 7 mo, were treated for femoral or humeral fractures using the "safety pin tie-in" (SPTI), a proximal transverse-pin-free Type Ia intramedullary pin tie-in external skeletal fixator. Clinical assessment, radiographic follow-up, and owner-reported outcomes were evaluated. Only minor complications after surgery were observed, and radiographic interpretation of healing was achieved in all cases. For all animals, weight-bearing function was regained soon after surgery, limb function was classified as full (Cases 1 and 3) or accepta

Closed reduction with external fixation (CREF) and percutaneous pinning (CRPP) are commonly used surgical interventions to treat distal radius fractures. However, there is no consensus regarding the optimal management of these types of fractures. Therefore, this study aimed to compare these treatments' clinical and radiological outcomes in two subgroups of distal radius fractures. The patients who were ≥ 18 and were referred for the diagnosis of type I and III (Fernandez) distal radius fractures were treated with one of these two methods, which have been evaluated through a retrospective analy

External fixators have been used effectively in damage control orthopaedic and open fractures management of various bones. It is well known that stability of external fixators is greatly influenced by its construct. Various rules have been documented to influence the stiffness and stability of external fixators. In this study, two clinical cases treated with a novel concept of cross self-locking rods external fixation construct were being described, coupled with biomechanical analysis of its stability in comparison with other constructs by using finite element study. These novel self-locking r…

PURPOSE: Shaping and assembling contemporary external fixators rapidly for the severe mandibular fractures remains a challenge, especially in emergency circumstance. We designed a novel external fixator that incorporates universal joints to provide the stabilization for mandibular comminuted fractures. This study aims to confirm the efficacy of this novel external fixator through biomechanical tests in vitro and animal experiments.
METHODS: In vitro biomechanical tests were conducted using 6 fresh canine with mandibular defect to simulate critical comminuted fractures. Three mandibles were st…

BACKGROUND: Palate, a midface bone, shapes the face and supports buttresses. Palatine process of maxilla and horizontal plate of palatine bone constitute it. Palatal bone is thicker anteriorly and laterally than posteriorly and centrally. Palatal fractures occur with maxillary fractures. Palatal-maxillary fractures occur 8-46.4% of the time.2,5 Palatal fractures can cause palatal ecchymosis in closed fractures and lacerations of upper lip, palatal mucosa, incisor tooth loss, or occlusal disruption in displaced fractures. The objective was to determine the surgical outcome of palatal fractures

AIM: Tibial shaft fractures are the most common type of long-bone fractures. External fixation (EF) and intramedullary nailing (IMN) are widely used surgical techniques for the definitive fixation of open tibial shaft fractures. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare EF to IMN for the definitive fixation of open tibial fractures.
METHODS: Medline, Embase, and CENTRAL databases were searched for eligible studies. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared EF to IMN for skeletally mature adults with open tibial fracture (Gustilo I, II, and III). We

BACKGROUND: Total dislocation of the talus from all its surrounding joints (talonavicular, tibiotalar, subtalar) is one kind of serious injury of the lower extremity with rare occurrence. It is usually accompanied by fractures of the talus and its periphery, as well as severe soft tissue injury, which is difficult to reset. Complications such as skin necrosis and infection are prone to occur in the early stage, and talus necrosis are prone to occur in the late stage, all of which aggravate disease severity and increase difficulties for its treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Tibial shaft fractures are among the most common lower extremity fractures. Treatment of tibial shaft fractures with intramedullary nailing has become the treatment of choice in adults. However, commonly reported outcomes include knee pain, limitations in activities of daily living and reduction in quality of life (QOL). The literature lacks high-quality studies to document superiority of intramedullary nailing versus other surgical treatment methods. The present study aims to compare the 12-month Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) - sport and recreation activiti
