Identification and semiquantitative estimation of antibiotics added to complete feeds, premixes, and concentrates.

Classical microbiological methods for determining antimicrobial compounds in feeds are nonspecific. Thus, there is a need to identify biological activity, and bioautography is used for this purpose. A routine method for detecting the following antimicrobial substances in feeds is described: avilamycin, avoparcin, Zn-bacitracin, erythromycin, flavomycin, furazolidone, lasalocid, monensin, narasin, penicillin, salinomycin, spiramycin, tetracyclines, tylosin, and virginiamycin. Carbadox can be detected by UV light examination of the plates prior to bioautography. Semiquantitative estimations of a

Taste agents as modulators of the feeding behaviour of grazing yaks in alpine meadows.

Feeding behaviour plays a significant role in promoting good animal health and welfare. It is also reflective of the quality and quantity of available feed. In fact, grazing livestock do not select their feed randomly, rather their behaviour is influenced by the texture, taste, and smell of each pasture species. Although taste agents are often used to modify feed intake for captive livestock, the effect on the feeding behaviour of grazing livestock has not yet been extensively evaluated in native grasslands. To address this gap in knowledge, herein, we sprayed three types of taste agents-salty

Behavior of cows during and after peak feeding time on organic and conventional dairy farms in the United Kingdom.

The behavior of groups of housed, lactating dairy cattle was observed over 2 winter housing periods on 20 organic farms and 20 conventional farms in the United Kingdom. Three methods were used: (1) 6 video-clips of 10 min duration were captured of cows feeding at sections of the feed-bunk face during the peak feeding period (0 to 90 min) and continuously observed for aggressive interactions among cows; (2) the proportion of cows at the feed-bunk face was scanned every 15 min for 4.5h to include the peak feeding period (0 to 255 min); and (3) all nonfeeding behaviors were scanned every 15 min f

Rapid Outpatient Tube Weaning Is Effective but Associated With Frequent Adverse Events: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

AIM: To evaluate the outcomes and safety of an outpatient tube-weaning programme involving rapid tube feed reduction. METHODS: This retrospective patient record-based cohort study included children referred to a multidisciplinary, hunger provocation-based tube-weaning programme from 2016 to 2023 in our tertiary paediatric hospital. The primary outcome was complete tube weaning. Secondary outcomes were changes in oral feeding skills and adverse effects. RESULTS: We traced 49 children with mostly somatic underlying diseases who had taken part in the programme. Of them, 65% achieved complete we

Prolonged requirements for mechanical ventilation and tube feeding support predicted 18-month outcomes for neonatal encephalopathy.

AIM: We evaluated the predictive ability of prolonged requirements for mechanical ventilation or tube feeding support for 18-month composite outcomes in infants with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy treated with hypothermia. METHODS: This retrospective, nationwide, observational study focused on newborn infants registered in Japan's Baby Cooling Registry between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2016. The adverse outcomes were defined as death or survival with cerebral palsy, visual or auditory impairment or the requirement for mechanical ventilation or tube feeding at 18 months of age. RESULTS

Plasmodium falciparum Gametocyte Density and Infectivity in Peripheral Blood and Skin Tissue of Naturally Infected Parasite Carriers in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum transmission depends on mature gametocytes that can be ingested by mosquitoes taking a blood meal on human skin. Although gametocyte skin sequestration has long been hypothesized as important contributor to efficient malaria transmission, this has never been formally tested. METHODS: In naturally infected gametocyte carriers from Burkina Faso, we assessed infectivity to mosquitoes by direct skin feeding and membrane feeding. We directly quantified male and female gametocytes and asexual parasites in finger-prick and venous blood samples, skin biopsy samples,

Does early oral feeding increase the likelihood of salivary fistula after total laryngectomy?

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the incidence of salivary fistula between groups with an early or late reintroduction of oral feeding, and identified the predictive factors for salivary fistula. METHODS: A randomised trial was performed using 89 patients with larynx or hypopharynx cancer, assigned to 2 groups (early or late). In the early group, oral feeding was started 24 hours after total laryngectomy or total pharyngolaryngectomy, and in the late group, it was started from post-operative day 7 onwards. The occurrence of salivary fistula was evaluated in relation to the following variables:

Pre-embolization evaluation of high-flow priapism: magnetic resonance angiography of the penis.

PURPOSE: High-flow priapism is often a sequela of perineal trauma resulting in an arteriocavernosal fistula (ACF) between a cavernosal artery and lacunar spaces of the penis. We report our experience utilizing magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in addition to color Doppler Sonography (CDS) in the workup and treatment planning of 4 patients with high-flow priapism. METHODS: All patients had suspected high-flow priapism diagnosed by clinical exam and CDS and underwent MRA of the penis prior to sub-selective arterial embolization (SSAE) of the feeding vessel(s). RESULTS: While CDS is valuable

Bowel necrosis caused by water in jejunal feeding.

BACKGROUND: Fifteen reports of bowel necrosis in patients receiving jejunal feeding have been reported. Etiology remains unexplained. METHODS: A patient with a 60% burn receiving jejunostomy tube feeding developed hypernatremia and was given distilled water in the jejunum, 400 mL every 2 hours. One week later, he developed an acute abdomen with abdominal distention. At operation, he had 4 L of cloudy fluid containing jejunal feeding. Three large duodenal perforations were present. The jejunostomy site was normal. In an animal study, water or normal saline (0.85% NaCl) were infused into the mi

Enteral nutrition is superior to parenteral nutrition in severe acute pancreatitis: results of a randomized prospective trial.

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition is well established for providing nutritional support in acute pancreatitis while avoiding pancreatic stimulation. However, it is associated with complications and high cost. Benefits of enteral feeding in other disease states prompted a comparison of early enteral feeding with total parenteral nutrition in this clinical setting. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with acute severe pancreatitis were randomized into two groups. The first (n = 18) received enteral nutrition through a nasoenteric tube with a semi-elemental diet, while the second group (n = 20) receiv

Continuous pump-tube enteric hyperalimentation.

The enteric route remains an overlooked site of alimentation. An intact functioning gastrointestinal tract can and should be used, even if the patient will not or cannot eat. The use of continuous pump-tube feeding of liquid diets through a small caliber feeding tube into the distal part of the duodenum or proximal portion of the jejunum is superior to previous methods of bolus tube feeding through large bore tubes placed in the stomach. A small tube has been developed which is inserted easily and positioned in the distal portion of the duodenum or proximal part of the jejunum. This tube has e

Diagnosis and Treatment of Pediatric Feeding Disorders: A Narrative Literature Review.

Background/Objectives: The definitions of feeding disorders of infants and young children were historically based on a dichotomic organic/non-organic vision. Since 2019, a new definition of pediatric feeding disorders (PFDs) has reshaped the understanding of these disorders with a global vision. The aim of this study is to obtain a better understanding of the diagnostic criteria for general practice, both by exploring the evolution of classifications and by clearing the actual definition of PFDs and their possible treatments. Methods: We conducted a narrative review of the literature, includin

Ecotoxicity of nano-metal oxides: A case study on daphnia magna.

In Europe REACH framework directive imposes data acquisition concerning toxicity on acquatic species before the commercialization of chemicals to assess environmental risks. According to official methods, exposure tests are performed under in vitro and standardized conditions: OECD's guideline rules external variables such as water type, feeding conditions, and exposure time. As consequence, such obtained results could be different from effects observed in natural environments. This study collects effects within 24-96 h of exposure to nano metal-oxides (ZnO, TiO2) on D. magna obtained by the e
