INTRODUCTION: Congenital peripheral constriction ring originating from soft tissues of the leg that is characterized with compression in the soft tissue usually involving the deep fascia surrounding the leg at the time of birth is occasionally observed in lower extremity. At the region of the constriction, fractures of tibia and fibula and foot deformities like clubfoot can be observed.
CASE PRESENTATION: In our report, 6-month and 8-month old infants with congenital constriction band and ipsilateral clubfoot were presented. They were treated with multiple Z plasties for their constricting ba

The use of intravenous nalbuphine in pre-hospital settings by paramedics has been demonstrated to be safe and effective. We assessed the effect of this additional intervention by comparing the time spent on-scene by ambulance crews treating patients with fractures of the tibia and fibula who received intravenous nalbuphine with those who had placement of an intravenous cannula alone and those who had neither cannula nor nalbuphine. The mean on-scene times were 17.1 min without cannulation, 29.9 min for cannulation without nalbuphine and 37.5 min for cannulation and administration of nalbuphine

BACKGROUND: Limb fractures represent the most common orthopaedic disease in pet rabbits. However, only a few studies have evaluated therapeutic details of limb fractures. There are no data available for long-term outcomes of limb fracture treatment.
METHODS: The medical records of six institutions were reviewed retrospectively to identify cases of traumatic limb bone fractures in pet rabbits between 1999 and 2020. The medical records (n = 387) were analysed for details of fracture prevalence, aetiology, therapy protocols, treatment complications, outcome and long-term effects. In addition to

The best approach for treating posterolateral tibial plateau fractures remains controversial. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the outcomes of patients with posterolateral tibial plateau fractures after open reduction and internal fixation with the fibular osteotomy approach. Between January 2009 and July 2012, twelve patients with posterolateral tibial plateau fracture were treated using the fibular osteotomy approach with a proximal tibia locking compression plate. The epidemiological data, operation details, and clinical outcomes over 25.6 ± 2.1 months (range, 22-38 months) of f

Severe valgus deformity of the knee secondary to osteoarthritis can predispose to stress fracture of the lateral tibial plateau. Described herein is a case of severe valgus knee deformity that was complicated by an intra-articular tibial plateau stress fracture and treated by a fully constrained Guepar hinge prosthesis with a satisfactory end result. The etiology and mechanism of this complication are discussed, with emphasis on the diagnostic process.

The authors have analysed the results of the treatment of 329 patients with closed diaphyseal fractures of the femur; in 252 of them various types of osteosynthesis have been made. Preference was given to closed osteosynthesis with a massive metal rod and drilling out of the medullary canal of the femur. It is pointed out that with this method of treatment the duration of disability was the lowest possible, and there was no invalidity. The necessity of exercise therapy and isometric gymnastics during the early postoperative period is stressed.

CASE: We present a 65-year-old man with an L4 conventional chordoma. Total en bloc spondylectomy (TES) of the involved vertebral bodies and surrounding soft tissues with reconstruction of the spine using a free vascularized fibula autograft (FVFG) is a proven technique, limiting complications and recurrence. However, graft fracture has occurred only in the lumbar spine in our institutional cases. We used a technique in our patient to ensure extra stability and support, with the addition of a femoral allograft sleeve encasing the FVFG.
CONCLUSIONS: Our technique for the reconstruction of the l

Seventeen major reconstructions of the femoral shaft using vascularized fibula osteoseptocutaneous grafts were performed from August 1984 to September 1993. Patients were 14 males and 3 females, with an average age of 34 years. All patients had sustained high-energy trauma in motor vehicle crashes and had bone defects averaging 10 cm. The skeletal defect was primary attributable to bone loss at the time of injury (2 cases) or secondary after infection and sequestrectomy (15 cases). Vascularized fibular transfer was performed at an average of 6 months after trauma. The fibular graft was inserte

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is typically caused by mutations in type 1 collagen genes, but in recent years new recessive and dominant forms caused by mutations in a plethora of different genes have been characterized. OI type V is a dominant form caused by the recurrent (c.-14C > T) mutation in the 5'UTR of the IFITM5 gene. The mutation adds five residues to the N-terminus of the IFITM5, but the pathophysiology of the disease remains to be elucidated. Typical clinical features present in the majority of OI type V patients include interosseous membrane calcification between the radius and ulna

Fifty-eight patients with severe thoracolumbar burst fractures were treated with bilateral transpedicular decompression, Harrington rod instrumentation, and spine fusion. Spinal realignment and stabilization was achieved by contoured dual Harrington distraction rods supplemented by segmental sublaminal wiring. Posterior element fractures were noted in 25 patients, 9 of whom had associated dural tears. Computed tomography was performed to assess the cross-sectional area of the spinal canal before surgery and after decompression. Patients at initial evaluation averaged greater than 67% spinal ca

OBJECTIVE: To determine if immediate plate fixation of open tibial plafond fractures has a negative effect on soft tissue complications and increases the risk of deep infection.
DESIGN: This was a single-institution retrospective cohort study performed at level-1 trauma center. All patients with open OTA/AO 43C plafond fractures treated over 20-year period with follow-up until fracture union or development of deep infection. Ninety-nine of 333 identified patents met the inclusion criteria. The intervention was operative treatment of open tibial plafond fractures. The main outcome measurements

The Bosworth fracture is defined as a bimalleolar fracture-dislocation of the ankle, with entrapment of the fibula behind the posterior tubercle of the distal tibia. In the current orthopedic literature, not only is this fracture pattern rare, but this type of fracture-dislocation has also been reported to be near impossible to close reduce, with the majority requiring early open reduction and internal fixation to prevent complications and poor clinical outcomes. Reported early complications include compartment syndrome and soft tissue complications from repeated closed reduction attempts. Com

BACKGROUND: Ankle fractures are common injuries, most typically involving the distal fibula and often requiring surgery. Traditional surgical techniques often utilise an interfragmentary compression screw (lag screw) and a neutralisation fibular plate. Due to limited subcutaneous tissue, such plates can be prominent, leading to wound complications, infections, and ankle pain. The lag screw-only (LSO) fixation has been suggested to provide adequate fixation and healing while minimizing soft tissue complications and reoperation rates.
AIMS: To undertake a systematic review and meta-analysis of

The union of tibial fractures often raises concerns. In one such case, a 62-year-old female patient presented in our Emergency Room (ER) with a comminuted tibial metaphyseal fracture resulting from a traffic accident. The patient underwent three surgical procedures in the following two years. The first intervention was open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) with a plate and screws. The second intervention, which took place three months after the first surgery, addressed the union delay through implant removal and closed reduction and internal fixation (CRIF) with an antegrade intramedullary t

CASE SUMMARY: A 7-month-old female neutered Bengal cat was referred to the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals following unknown trauma. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a grade IIIB open, comminuted, mid-diaphyseal fracture of the left tibia and fibula, and grade IIIB open mid-diaphyseal fractures of the left metatarsals II-V. The fractures were stabilised with tibial and metatarsal external skeletal fixators. The open wounds were initially debrided surgically using conventional dressings, resulting in a small amount of circumferential granulation tissue formation by 10 days posto
